I was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Bushwick. It became a ghetto when I was a child and people were forced out by crime. Now people are being forced out by high prices. Both stink. The "hipsters" moving to NY to be cool are anything but. They are conformists. It is so sad what is happening to Brooklyn now.
@11201BK I wish I would have caught your snide remarks when they were made. Anyhow, if you're talking about Black People in housing projects, let me educate you. Black spent millons daily for decades, keeping the downtown shops alive. Though the sneaker store are Arab or Jew owned, I don't recall either one spending a penny.
If you are really one of the Bagel Guys, I am sorry that your business is adversely affected. Hopefully you'll be able to set up shop again in one of the new retail fronts.
Besides adding to the tax base that keeps people in public housing and Section 8, the high end condos, rentals and hotel rooms are going to help bring about a change in the services and shops--and I welcome the development with open arms.
The fact of the matter is that we're getting off topic by talking about the larger scope of Brooklyn development (some of which I don't support, like Atlantic Yards).
The Fulton Mall area, which is the focus of this newscast, NEEDS TO CHANGE. It should serve the community that lives and pays taxes in the are--Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, etc, and NOT the largely poor transients that come to shop for sneakers and gold teeth.
Unaffordable? For people who receive Section 8 subsidies or the people in the Ingersoll houses? That's not what this area needs more of.
10,000 cars? Nice figure--did you pull it out of your ass? The New York Times says 7000 housing units, and you can be damn sure than the vast majority will not have cars.
The Brooklyn Nets stadium, if it happens, is in PROSPECT HEIGHTS, not Downtown Brooklyn.
You welcome the change...your Albee Square Mall will be a sixty story facility with mostly unaffordable housing. You welcome change....when the elevenen approved projects are finished there will be 15,000 units of living and retail space at market value. You welcome the change ..welcome approximately 10,000 Cars that these families and workers will drive downtown. Now imagine your Brooklyn Nets are playing a home game and there are 10,000 more cars downtown
Save Brooklyn? You mean by keeping the Fulton Mall area ghetto and dirty?
I welcome the new development and the changes it'll bring.
The woman interviewed for this piece, Marvell Cruikshank, a is a 26 year old with THREE kids, one of whom she gave birth to at 17. She lives in public housing (on MY tax dime), doesn't work and thinks this situation isn't fair?
Sorry, but what's not fair is people me having to pay taxes to support people like Marvell Cruikshank.
.Yeah, I lost my business, I took a beating but its not about me and its not about YOU...Its about renovation...not gentrification . Already having sewerage problems at the new Gold St. Development. City says developers problem and Developers say Citys problem...bottom line Our peroblem. Fix whats under... before building on top.Think about it.
Welcome to the reality Hells Kitchen residents faced starting 30 years ago. Welcome to the Elitist society created by the politicians and developers.
