  • A Bruce Springsteen song. Patti Smith's version is much better. Bruce also wrote The Pointer Sisters 'Fire'

  • Gah, sexiest song ever written. A lot of amorously themed songs from past decades sound embarrassingly cheesy today, especially ones referencing sex and bondage, but this is one of the few that sounds as fresh as they day it was written. Venus in Furs by Velvet Underground is likewise.

  • Wow.

  • cant heatch yah nooawww... cant hearch yah nooaaooooahhw.. hehehe

  • still have Patti's vinyl albums from the seventies, could, never part with them even though I haven't had a turntable for years.

  • Patti Smith awesome. Why do people call her punk? I don't have anything against punk but Patti Smith ain't punk!

  • Comment removed

  • @hugatag this is not a cover. she co-wrote this with Bruce Springsteen. Both are from New Jersey. It is her song

  • @kimbahlish Yes you are correct and thank you,I have removed that post.

  • @Kyussfan96 you need to hear the rest of this album... and the 2 before it, especially Horses!

  • @Kyussfan96 actually patti smith is punk rock as fuck, ur uneducated about her, check out pumping my heart patti smith, have you ever read her book? SHE IS FUCKING PUNK ROCK

  • @hellzbelle222 Relax.

  • Here in our bed until the morning comes ... Lo mejor de Patti Smith!!!

  • Even though she didn't write it, she OWNS this song.

  • super!!!

  • This song sent me the first time I ever heard it and it still send's me-this is how you feel at the start of a love affair when it's all new and exciting...

  • @Dolly1366 Great observation. What do you think of this lyric: "Love is an angel disguised as lust." I always thought of it as the other way around. When the affair begins and it's all wild passion, one might think one is in love while all along it was simply hormone driven lust. Then, when the dust clears, one grows accustomed to the other, the lust wanes, and then one wonders - where is the love? In short, one mistook lust for love, rather than love for lust. Thoughts?

  • @Chiczaro Excellent observation. One that has traveled a long distance on this road we call life can only understand that what you say is 100% TRUE!

  • j'écoutais et chantais à 15 ans et le fait toujours à 50 lol

  • J'écoutais à 16 ans

  • loool i used to think the song was 'heat of the night'

  • thumbs if you listen to it in 2012 ;)) :D

  • @miiiiirable shut up, dick.

  • Reading "Just Kids" right now. Wow! It is a beautiful story.

  • @Sunflower0122Z "Just Kids" is awesome and its my new source of inspiration

  • its 2012..

  • what an amazing song !!!!

  • Is that hair on her armpits?

  • @groovynut222 who cares? Its PATTI dammit!! hehe

  • @groovynut222 yes she is a bloke

  • Patti is one of the crucial singer songwriters of the late 70s. Her music is so influential even to this day. She is quite the artist and a true visionary. She makes the Gaga's of the world, seem like turds on a sidewalk.

  • @Dudeified43091 (I'm sure you know, but Bruce wrote this one)

  • @ShallotThat Bruce wrote the music, but they both collaborated on the lyrics

  • 9 Dislikes......

    Must be U S Congressman.....

    Totally Clueless!!!!

  • The only decent verison of song

  • 9 dislikes????

    Must be U S Congressman

  • check out Nils Lofgren's take on this awesome song.

  • Patti made the song much more sinister than Bruce's version.

  • @hightimesbruce

Patti's version subordinates all others...Bruce and Natalie can't match her energy...

The best is the best, my friend, and Patti IS THE BEST

  • @hightimesbruce What an absolutely astute observation. I would never have used those words - but that is exactly the case. Her version is just raw, gut twisting passion. Good eye.

  • @Chiczaro

Thank you! I don't know, I just felt that Springsteen's original was more an anthem of the working class grind, whereas Patti Smith makes the song much more about control.

  • @hightimesbruce Your reply to my comment was forwarded to me. Again, you are right on. If ever there was a working man's musician it is Bruce Springsteen. Same is often said of John Mellencamp and Bob Segar. If you have ever seen Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" he's nailed it. I never really liked Springsteen - I am from the same geographic area - and I guess he captures everything everything I don't like about it. I sure won't take anything away from his powers of observation.

  • Patti....

    The Queen...

  • She is the Mama Queen from which we learn.......learn,,,,and learn,,,,,,and never forget ♥ EVER

  • Love this tune! added it to my tunes playlist. They dont write em like this anymore. Thanks for posting it I will sub ya too.

  • 4.08 a.m., anger and sadness in my heart and i found the power in this song

  • I love PATTI SMITH IS VERY GOOD SINGER AND ALSO THAT SING

  • I love Patti Smith!

  • gilda radner

  • Love this song & her yummy armpits!

  • Poetry on music

  • Bruce wrote the music and the chorus. Patti wrote the rest of the lyrics. Just read it in a biography. What genius happens when two amazing individuals get together!

  • @elmosmom1994 don't get me wrong, I love patti as much as the next guy (more than bruce actually) and I don't mean to contradict whatever bio you read, but listen to bruce's demo of the song, it was recently released on "the promise" - bruce wrote 90% of the lyrics in this song, not just the chorus - patti changed a few lines in the bridge. Not that I don't think she and her band made this song special - they rocked it up significantly and she's a hell of a singer - but it's mostly a bruce tune

  • Check out the comments a ways down. I obviously am not the only one who read this. More than once. I adore Bruce, but I think Bruce would even tell you Patti is a poet and he turned to her. I am just glad it was written at all. What a powerful song and it has always been one of my favorites.

  • amazing that bruce springsteen wrote this

  • God Bless Patti !!!

  • Man for all of you who weren't there or alive when Patti was at her peak reflected in this song, she held the power that people like Anna Calvi are coming into toay. Youth has power and this can be held close while teras of joy flow for having witnessed this era and been a part of it......

  • i love shaved underarm!

  • so amazing <3

  • Magnificent!

  • hairy armpits

  • @catsmandoo1 hey, i'm 13 and i know the difference! hehehe! PATTI ROCKS!!!!!!!!

  • You should check out her autobiography. "Just Kids" is her book about her early years, especially her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe. It is honest, and earnest. Her life is brilliant because she re-made herself out of very little. She had little background in the arts. She was destined by birth to work some minimum wage or factory job in Jersey. Instead she made herself into the kind of person who could create this. Mapplethorpe helped her immensely, and her book is her tribute.

  • Love this. ♫♬

  • we are born in the same day.....december 30 <3

  • @ourriangel Me too, and I didn't even know it. Thanks for pointing that out !!

  • Quel son de m*

  • For some weird reason, I can imagine Jodie Foster singing this, and therefore I like it even more!

  • i love this song BECAUSE.......

  • BRUUUUUCE

  • I like this better then the 10,000 Maniacs version.

  • nice patti

  • this song is aswesome. i love it. always have.

  • I'd like to remember that this song was made by Bruce Springsteen, even if Patti Smith made it famous. ;)

@911insidejo8 I think Gaga is a great artis, and if @Gibbs listen at some of her lives could prove it to himself. She comes from blues, but (probably also for money) she plays a total different kind of music. I think they're just different, Patti Smith is known as a complete artist, Gaga for now is consider just a cultural phenomenon (even if she's not). And Madonna is not a singer, c'mon!

  • No one can ever do it like Patti Smith. One of my Desert Island Discs. Such power. All teenagers should listen to her

  • intro is simply terrific

  • I met patti a couple years ago. She was incredibly nice..she touched my lips with her index finger and wrote on my t-shirt. greatest moment ever. so kind and sweet.

  • thumbs up if you listen to it in 2011! whooohoooo

  • @nemesis6606 No, I'm listening to it in 1763 and I'm writing this with an e-quill.

  • @DayDreamAscent Rofl. You're my hero. I hate it when people post stupid shit like that. Your comment made my day xD

  • @DayDreamAscent I was listening to this on headphones, in order not to disturb my resting girlfriend. Then I read your comment and laughed out load. :)

  • emozionante!

  • OMG what a powerhouse song! Lady gaga only wishes to be this good! :)

  • @Gibb..I think Gaga far surpasses Smith. Gaga is the most brilliant pop star to emerge since Madonna with an ability to do it all and she does. Smith is severely flawed in a lot of regards-I think her poetry is pretty bad and she certainly can't be confused for a serious musician like Gaga. However, she is well worth getting to know and follows absolutely no blueprint and as technically flawed as her singing is, it conveys such intensity it hardly matters. She is 1 of a kind.

  • @911insidejo8 I will assume you are under 30 at least. So you think ''I'm educated in sex yeah and I want it bad want it bad'' is poetry?? Hmm.....

  • @GibbyGibbyGibb how can you assume 'under 30'. My Nan is almost 70 and she likes Gaga. I'm 14 and prefer Patti Smith.

  • @911insidejo8 ahaha your comment is hilarious to read. how can you call gaga a 'serious musician'? smith doesn't need vocal synthesisers and auto tuning to create brilliant music, she can convey her passion and intensity through pure music, and doesn't need flashy pyrotechnics and costumes to perform an emotional and raw live set. lady gaga uses these as a distraction from her god awful music. i feel sorry for my generation for its warped vision of 'good' music. bring back the real poetry.

  • @mrbenjaminwh ...well I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't think there is anything wrong with using studio innovation to create progressive and bold music. Imagine if Stevie Wonder stayed complacent in his recording style formula rather than exploring a more personal vision by incorporating heavy keyboard and synthesizer. Imagine the Beatles retaining 3-chord guitar/drum simplicity for all their recordings. We would never have had Sgt Pepper's and others.

  • @911insidejo8 Comparing Lady Gaga with P Smith. It's like comparing a Traban with a Ferrari !

  • @911insidejo8 Dude, you are either 13, or on CRACK!!! I see by your name, you are also a conspiracy theorist. SHOCKER. You need a rock history lesson. Besides, Patti is ROCK, and Gaga is pop. Its like comparing Ann Wilson to Katy Perry!!!! So, don't be a TROLL.

  • @catsmandoo1 Ann Wilson has the same second name as me, WIN!!! :D

  • @catsmandoo1 ...lol, right, organized crime doesn't exist, people never conspire to commit crime. Only crazy individuals would believe something like the mafia or money laundering exists, lol.

  • Mi piace

  • I love you, Patti, for your gift.

  • Magnifique!! ON manque de chansons comme ça de nos jours!

  • una delle canzoni più belle che abbia mai ascoltato.

la sua voce poi è semplicemente meravigliosa <3

  • 5 people are strange

  • @MermeladaBeth Well, 5 people (7 actually while i write this) are differente from you. They can have each a motive to actually vote against the song you like. One can have lost a loved one while this song comes to the radio, another remember bad school days while hearing it, to a third this song reminded him of his dead mother who loves this song so much. None of them are "strange", they're humans and humans comes with any range of tastes and memories. :)

  • @ConnanConnan By the way, thank you fotsidd for having posted one of my favorite song. Brings back to me so good memories.

And, of course, love and thanks to Patti Smith and her group for this beautiful song.

  • 4 people are strange

  • you go girl

  • I confess I only heard of its existence in a French and Saunders parody, in which they played extras in her music video XD

  • such a nice song!

  • Nice song, this was released two years before I was born! Great classic!

  • @PokerPlum I agree,whole-heartedly. Thanx for being brave and saying that. i wish i had.

  • GREAT song. Love the controversy she caused with those hairy armpits.

  • this is my 35th time lisenting to this song

    i love it

  • who gives a fuck who gets the credit...life would be better for all of us if it weren't for people who buy into the "who's first" bullshit. it's a gift to everyone everywhere, no matter who did it.

  • Springsteen wrote ALL the music and 98% of the lyrics - and he recorded a demo long before Jimmy Iovine convinced Patti to record it. She added a few lyrics and finally recorded it - it single-handedly kept her career half-alive. To say she "co-wrote" it is a huge stretch - and a huge gift from Bruce to Patti.

  • Mythikal song and mythical singer. Unforgettable.

  • this is not a video this is an audio with a picture- cheap ass

  • This song is so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song was such a big part of my late teens...I absolutely love it!!

  • great song!

  • Bruce springsteen wrote the song, should have never given it to her... shame

  • @GabeU2Fan Shame why?

  • @GabeU2Fan she sing this song better then Bruce Springsteen, and he probably realised this, she didan't steal it from him. it's not a shame at all it is great !

  • @GabeU2Fan Patti Smith co-wrote the song with Springsteen. It is NOT his song; it's their song. Can't believe you didn't know she co-wrote it.

  • @GabeU2Fan Springsteen himself credited her with salvaging the song from obscurity. He gave it to her to finish, which she did. So they definitely did co-write it.

  • grrrrrrrrrreat song dont make them like this any more

  • 0 dislikes lets keep it that way

  • thanks Calvin

  • Patti is everything

    Thx

  • There is no better version. Patti Smith owns this song and always will.

  • @PokerPlum dude hahah this is a cover.

the original is bye bruce springsteen

  • @LIGHT2U4U That's funny. My twelve year old son said the same thing. Too bad you and every other male that has your attitude has to miss out on the sexiness of many women who embrace the fact that sexually mature people...have hair.

  • I loved Patti ! My friends thought she was ugly... until we saw her in concert in Philly. Then they found out she was as hot as I told them she was.

I also remember making love all night (thanx Quaaludes and Coke ) as the Easter album played over and over again cause we didn't want to get out of bed and let go of each other long enough to swing the arm over on the turntable.

And now i'm 50. Shit. Seems like just last week...

  • @racoonster Ludes and coke ??? Dude, ummmmm, all due respect but, you more than likely only thought you were having sex. LOL On the other hand, Patti can still kick ass in Rock and Roll. A lot better than any of the crap that's out now.

  • @postie218 Nah, we didn't get blitzed out of our minds, we used some restraint. For example, the idea of burning through a gram of methamphetamine in anything less than a month would have been appalling to us, it only takes 30mg to have you bouncing of the walls for 12 hrs for christs sake! The crime of my generation was not being honest with our children, and teaching them about drugs, sex, restraint, and responsibility. I'm betting Patti would agree...

  • This is a GREAT album - one of the best of all time, and definitely one of the most important Punk/ New Wave transition albums. Patti was - and is - the High Priestess of New Wave.

  • I remember living in Berkeley, CA and seeing this album cover in a record store. I was amazed and maybe even a little repelled that a woman would flaunt her unshaved underarms and put it on an album cover! Although I shave mine, I look back and admire her guts and total lack of conformity. She has always remained true to her own tune and done it remarkably well. She is more artist than celebrity and I love that about her. Don't you?

  • @misslanvin I am amazed that you were fixated on the unshaven armpits of Patti, the expression on here face is so empassioned, how did you miss that?

  • AMAZING

  • do you think the writer can do it as good as this?

  • i bought this song when i was 15.shit i was 47 a couple of days ago.the old 45 singles up in the roof space somewhere.

  • Wow! That's my only coment.

  • Good grief, this song reminds me of the one i love!

"come on now try and understand, the way i feel under your command..."

  • Take me now baby as i am,hold me close, try and understand...

  • i miss dancing to this with my lover

  • i used to dance to this with my lover... i miss you my darling...

  • genius. but shave your underarms!

  • @TheElisarte Why?
