SpringSkates were developed with the Recreational/Fitness skater in mind, to smooth out the bumps and buzz of trail/urban skating. They are not a speed, hockey or aggressive skate, although they have been used in those areas. =)
@SpringBlade i doubt that. agressive skates are used for grinding and such and hocky skates require you to go at a high rate of speed and stop and such so this dosent work. speed i have bont speed 3 point skates with an aluminum s frame which is one of the stiffest settups for sakting and stiffer is better thats wat she said
I think they look pretty good! i live on the coast and want to skate along the seafront but the quality of the paths makes it almost impossible as there are soo many hole and bumps! Tried it on aggressive skates - not a bloody chance!
They already have shock absorbers for in-line skates. They are free and eco friendly too. They are called knees. Bend them and you get a similar result to what's being demonstrated here.
You are correct, knees are great shock absorbers for the larger bumps. SpringSkates do not replace the function of the knee they are deigned to reduce the high frequency buzz up to and over 100hz. This is most noticeable on trails with weathered asphalt and can cause some numbness in the foot for some skaters. The springs will deflect up to 8mm for the unexpected bumps and cracks in the surface. They are not off road skates.
1. what's the springrate here? I can't imagine it's very high for the application.
2. if they bottom out, the wheel's hitting the chassis & stoping or at least doing some extreme braking. Not what I would like to happen when I land or hit a bump at high speed.
The current version, 'G5' there is a bump stop on the front and rear spring for just that reason, again SpringSkates are designed for the Recreational / Fitness skater.
what comes to mind for me is the shock load from, say, a 3 to 4 foot drop off, although hopefully someone in speed skates isn't doing much urban skating where I would find the need
-it would sacrifice durability. I guarantee fancy moving parts like that couldnt handle any abuse and would break very quickly. Unless you skate like a little girl and can't balance well cuz u need suspension.
-It would sacrifice speed and acceleration. It would dampen the force of u pushing on the scate to accelerate. Plus while doing that you'd be saying to yourself constantly: bouncy bouncy bouncy bouncy............
I don't see the point, myself. Bigger wheels pretty much eliminate the vibration buzz, and better skating skills are needed if you have trouble tripping up on rougher surfaces.
as i thin..the wheel are moving up and down when it had go on to a little thing....so if a person go on to it,,,the suspension will be press down..so.....suspension for wat?
I guess the machine simulates the weight of a person. So the suspension is under tension all the time, but gets more bended as it moves over an obstacle.
wheel are not soft as you might think, the is a lot off weight on the frame.
why would you need suspension with 80MM wheels?
watch the video again, the front wheel deflects to the side over the bars, that meas the wheels are going out of alignment which will act like a brake.
Originally designed as a recreational/fitness skate to address a complaint from many skaters about the foot numbing vibrations transferred to the foot by rough pavement. So no need for a lot of travel, we also needed to keep the suspension as simple as possible, with no rubbing or bearing surfaces to wear out.
humm i see no stopper to prevent wheel bite :S epic fail!

are these skates good enough for jumping?

Maybe now that their feet aren't so numb, all those roller bladers won't spend so much time on their knees.

this maybe ok for slow speed, not good for speedskating. the dynamics are very different at low speed vs high speed.
also speedskating skates is all about stiffness, we need the most stiff dynamics that provide just enough grab to keep us up:-)

great idea, but 2 things.
1. what's the springrate here? I can't imagine it's very high for the application.
2. if they bottom out, the wheel's hitting the chassis & stoping or at least doing some extreme braking. Not what I would like to happen when I land or hit a bump at high speed.

Hello,
Great questions!
The springrate is ~250lbs for each spring.
The current version, 'G5' there is a bump stop on the front and rear spring for just that reason, again SpringSkates are designed for the Recreational / Fitness skater.
Thanks!

Dude, just don't use them to ride on a lathe..

its sick , but would break easy
0carnifex0 3 years ago
We have beat the #@$% out of the G5, our current version, with no failures whatsoever. The heaviest skater weighs in at around 230lbs.
We have a lighter spring for skaters in the 100-170lb range
All outdoor testing has been done on paved trails and sidewalks.
Thanks!

Not an off-road skate. SpringSkate is a recreational/fitness skate. Please read the description by clicking "About This Video"

Suspension should be simple and above all else - travel - with the wheels under the foot there is no possibility for travel
