I remember watching this on television over here in Singapore and it must be have been my very first exposure to opera. Today, she is my favorite opera singer, hence my nickname on youtube. Thank you so much for bringing this back. If I remember correctly, didn't Sarah Vaughan sing either before Leontyne or after Dizzy? That's her in the green gown on the left, right? I think she sang "So Many Stars". If only there was a Price/Vaughan duet! Ah!
You don't understand a black woman's pain. When i think about all that Dame Price had to endure to get to her station in life, all I can say is "How dare anyone comment on her facial expression. The reason why Butterfly was one of her signature roles was because she could relate to the pain.
@biggeroo I once sat on a bus with one of her colleagues who said that while the Met was on tour in the 60s, she had to endure bomb threats! Can you imagine having to sing so beautifully around that craziness??
Ms. Price is one of the nicest opera superstars I have ever met. She is kind, gracious, and a wonderful mixture of elegance and southern hospitality. You cant judge her by her facial expressions or characterizations.
well, crystal balls are accurate. Nah, I'm kiddin'. She really is an incredibly, and unexpectedly, kind woman and a brilliant teacher. talmagedotson2 hits the nail on the head. It's those signature eyebrows that'll scare ya.
Bitch !!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, you bitch learn about opera, That is not even a personal openion, but down right agorance. Darling I just got back from NY and have met that Devine Lady, Queen Leontyne, the girl is sooo sweet, and I must confess she made me cry, that Lady has SUFFER FOR HER ART. she was such a host.So bitch attack her vocally, but to mention of her facial expression is down right RUDE, I would love to meet Jessye, then i can die. Was too young to meet the Fab Callas
The death scene from Butterfly was among Leontyne's greatest encores in recitals. To hear her perform it onstage was a unique and thrilling experience. She dropped the role fairly early in her career, but I heard her do a few performances of the opera at the Met in the 70's. She was great then and is spectacular on the RCA recording with Tucker.
This is the performance which blew my mind a age 19. I fell madly in love with her, then not knowing who she was, or who she IS. This is the performance which has lead me to pursue formal voice training. It was brava then, and will be BRAVA, forever!
Thank you.

Respond to this video... What the video didn't capture was Sarah Vaughn singing "So Many Stars!"

what supreme ignorance. Price has a stage persona and that's what you take umbrage with. why castigate her personally if you don't know her?

The Butterfly Mad Scene as I call it and aria is another one in which Price seems to own. As if Puccini wrote is exclusively for her.
