Actually Folks, this Techumseh is a kart-specific engine, not junk. Every one was built with an oil pump- Techumseh tested the engines at something ridiculous like 5500rpm for 48hrs, and they only showed minimal wear. The only thing that goes wrong with them that's frequent is worn out throttle shaft bores. I'm an mechanic at a small engine shop that will work on anything, including chinese diesels. The china diesel will be slightly faster- but keep the Techumseh on hand for spare power!
boy does the sound of that tecumseh bring back memories of the gocart i had when i was 10...the 5 horse on that one sounded exactly the same. i remember i would ride it, then let it sit for a year sometimes and it would start right back up again even with a carb and ignition system full of dirt and water. still runs like brand new
Did you know that briggs and stratton actually makes racing engines? If you go to their website they have a section that has race engines specifically made for go karts and things like that. They're pretty cool cuz they get like 20+ hp and some have a cold air intake and other stuff.
@unaclocker Sounds like you need to see the folk at SuckindieseDOTCOM/thingy A great discussion board on Diesel projects like this one and particularly Diesel Motortcycles
cool vid but its not good to let those run without being bolted down, and especially on concrete haha ull end up eventually cracking the block, jus 2 let u know.
i have a tecumseh 5hp engine that was given to me and i plan to put it on a go kart. i'm wondering what type of clutch i should use because it's max rpm is about 3600/3800 and any centrifical clutch i can find catches at about 2200rpm...
also, would you be willing to sell your tecumseh cheap? or atleast the pull start?
Where can you find clutches for that engine? I'm planning on dumping a Kohler HD350 or another used small diesel into my mini bike. But before I do, I need to know where to get a clutch that'll fit on the crank output.
You have a website that you go through that you mind sharing? :P
Only drawback of the diesel is the cost. The diesel's a whole lot safer, virtually no fire hazard since the exhaust is a lot cooler, no spark plug, and diesel's much less flammable. In an emergency you could run your kart with used cooking oil, with a little motor oil added, or kerosene, almost any liquid fuel //except// gasoline. Notice how when you throttle it the gas engine gets louder, but the diesel gets quieter.... :-)
@frosty9595 - Remind me again why BSA, a great bike company isn't in business anymore, or Velocette. Where did Texaco go? Why didn't the DeLorean stay a float? What about Avro and its Arrow model plane? What about other motor companies like Sunbeam, Jensen, Marcos, AC and Datsun? You are asking why a good business failed, because shit happens or they get bought out, maybe they just decide to dissolve the company because they don't feel like running it anymore.
@frosty9595 - As well, its hard to call them out of business when there is a Tecumseh store down the road from me. In Canada, they still have stores here and there, least in Western Canada. Hell, I even bought a new lawnmower this year because the B&S died a brutal death this spring. Its a brand new lawnmower, from this year, and you know what engine it has on it, Tecumseh. The engine is brand new too.
@ismokewead420 I never have any reason to have any diesel around to fire them up sadly. Otherwise I would. But normally I have them sold on craigslist for 200$ before I even bother to get some fuel and fire one up for YouTube. I'll be getting a few this winter when they scrap stuff out so maby then

that diesel has rediculously high low-end torque, it would make for the ultimate peel out :) have you tested it on your go cart? lol how efficient is it?
I would get that on wood blocks. You don't want to snap off one of the engine block bolts from it pounding the pavement. China steel is getting better, but for now, its still China steel.

The advantages of diesel is that it uses less fuel and you can carry less fuel in order to reduce weight. Works in most forms of motor racing.

Why does everyone say Tecumseh wrong, its *Tee-cum-see* I know, i live in Tecumseh, MI where the motors are manufactured.

@juniortore1 they run differently then gas engines they produces way less rpm's but have way more torque
TechtodaProductions 9 months ago
@juniortore1 its the way the fuel is injected in the older one, the fuel is ignited before tdc
