The PGM301 is near impossible to find new these days. They have been discontinued :( They only make the PGM300RE now which is the same except that it has got an Edge Bridge..
funny you say these pups are high output lol ... technically they are much much lower output then the Dimarzio Evolutions that wer in ur JEM ...this guitar has PAF Pro's , which Dimarzio considers medium output and the Evolutions being HIGH output...but w/e...maybe the overall brighter tonality of the guitar an pups tricks ur ears into thinkin ther louder. PAF Pros are deff a tad crispier than the warmer middy tone of the evo's
A lot of it is in the amp to be honest. If you want van halen, push your middle and treble up quite high, I've never tried to get a metallica tone but I would start by pushing the bass up, the middle up and the treble down.
But as guitars go, yeah it's pretty versatile.
However, Dean's are a different story. I've played lots of deans, and never played one (apart from the MAB SIG) that I've though was any good. To me, they all feel and sound cheap and nasty, although again, thats just my opinion.
Fortunately, I've actually played a Dean MAB and actually (although it's nothing like the setup MAB usually has) its a really nice guitar. It feels nice, it's REALLY easy to play and it's got good tone. I'd say it's a good bet, although perhaps a little overpriced, especially for a Dean.
They are very different pickups. If you want a warmer and thicker tone, I'd go for the Jem, but the seem to lack any brutality. If you listen to the way Vai plays, he doesn't actually play hard, or brutal, it's all very fast, very accurate and very delicate, so the Jem pickups wheren't designed to have that harsh edge, where as the PGM pickups really have that harsh snarl to them that I like, but for cleaner and warmer tones, the Jem would be better.
I love your gear setup. I would definitely love to have your setup. I am set as far as guitars. My Washburn MG94 is darn near similar to that PGM. You are a great player and your sounds are great.
the PAF PRO pickups are nice, but u really got try the Tone Zone (Madeby dimarzio, the same company) I have a pgm301 too. its a nice guitar. nice playing dude.
tube screamer makes everything sound perfect

@ironhamster88
Also the different fingerboard materals and body materials play a part as well, but the main source is the pickups.
