Frankies are half-human half-animal creatures. Most of the characters in the film are Frankies. Of course, one of the main themes of the film is the narrator questioning the differences between humans and Frankies...

Well that's the question, isn't it? I purposely left it open to interpretation so there is no right answer. But here's a something to consider:

If the Frankies are really animal people, the movie is probably about the detective confronting his prejudice/bigotry against them. If "Frankies" are simply humans and the animal aspect is imagined, what does this say about his opinion of his fellow man? In the end, does it make a difference? Isn't it racism either way?
