An indie film about Janet's life, "Since I Don't Have You," is being filmed in Pittsburgh presently; there's a Facebook page about it. I'm honored to play Joe Rock, their manager.
The Skyliner's beauty for me was the slight jazz subtletly in thier chords to a traditional Doo Wop accompaniment. The backround was a tad more polished. The second thing was the lead singers skill in singing syllables. And I spent two years in Pittsburg so what can I say ? Good name for a Pittsburg group.
I used to have this song dedicated to my boy friend on the radio while we were parking. How in the world did I remain "A good girl".
I alway's had "This I Swear Is True" dedicated to my boy friend over the radio when we were parking.( How in the world did I remain "A good girl") To this day I always think of him when I hear this song and wonder where he is, good girls are a thing of the past.
@theitalian556 She suffered for many years with severe Endogenous Depression, that is still a very difficult condition to treat today.I was lucky enough to have been there for this concert in 1973.I was crushed when I heard she finally died by her own hand.

@latinsoul53 If its the same concert I attended, it was around March of 1973 at the Nassau Coliseum. This is the original group with Joe Verscharen and Wally Lester (Joe on far end and Wally next to Jimmy). They had reunited to record another album but disbanded shortly after for good. After that, The Jaggerz (The Rapper) backed up Jimmy for a while since Joe Rock managed both groups.
It is so exceedingl rare that a live performance can match the recording, but here it is. What a phenomenal group, I will never, ever tire of hearing their music. RIP Janet.
I believe this was at the old Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden in NYC with Clay Cole as the emcee. ( If my memory serves me..which is not so good sometimes these days..)
BY MY COUNT, JIMMY WAS 34 OR 35, & jANET A YEAR YOUNGER, WHEN THEY DID THIS, IN '74. What a voice Janet had, & Jimmy in his 30's, was at his very best. Where have the years gone?? I was 13 y/o, when The Skyliners hit--many,many years gone by. Wolfsky9
The woman's voice near the end! It caught me so off guard when she was singing it and then I got goosebumps. Such a beautiful ballad! I always return to it, everytime just to cheer up. Hahaha! How ironic! =)
I heard Lou Christie on Sirius Radio talk about Janet the girl in the Skyliners. He seemed to be interested in her {a lot} I know they are both for Pitts. Maybe someone can tell what they know.
I knew Joe Rock who was the manager of the group since the beginning and co-wrote Since I Don't Have You. At the time Lou Christie and his wife had just moved to NYC and I was promoting a concert at the Beacon Theater and had the Skyliners on the bill. Joe was going to have dinner with Lou so they were very close. It is a very close knit community. When Janet died groups like Manhattan Transfer went to the funeral. Janet was loved, but had a lot of issues. We still miss her.
I am 28 yrs old and I can not believe that people of 2010 have the privilege of watching this amazing group. Thats all you can call this, a privilege. I thank my grandpa and my great grandma for cleaning house and working in the garage to this music. The Skyliners especially, are from my favorite era! Thanks so much for posting and R.I.P. Janet. She had a great voice.
Oh my God - I`m just blown away by the sheer genius of this truly fabulous all-time great doo wop harmony vocals group - tears of uncontrollable emotion just well up in my old eyes every time I watch this ! Just wish you could buy this entire `74 concert on DVD somewhere....please please please someone bring it out soon ! It`s easily as fantastic as having being at any Elvis concert for example !

Reply to california 123100. Janet tragically took her own life on 21 February 1980 - in her own house garage by carbon monoxide poisoning. It is believed that marital problems were the cause.
It will be the 30th anniversary of Janet`s tragic death on sunday 21 February - so let`s all say a prayer for her and remember what astonishing performances and memories she gave to us with those fabulous songs !
One of the GREATEST groups of ALL time - the harmonies are incredible....completely unsurpassable ! R.I.P Janet...I wanna meet you in Heaven - I`m 65 now so probably won`t have too long to wait !

Wonderful performance. I remember seeing them on tv in 1973 or 1974 and they were so good. This song mom use to play when I was a little guy back then. That man can sing. My goodness can he sing.
Jimmy Beaumont great singer and song writer. Before I moved to Florida I would see the Skyliners whenever they appeared on Long Island.. Long live DOO WOP.....
The late Janet Vogel's son is currently producing a movie about his mom and her career with the Skyliners. Let's all support it. This group makes me proud to be from Pittsburgh, PA. If you love music, you've got to love The Skyliners!!!!!!
This is from a concert "20 Years of Rock n Roll Vols. 1 & 2" It was filmed at the Rockland County Community College in upstate New York. This was the first live concert shown on HBO. The DVD of the entire concert is available on the Internet on thevideobeat. It has lots of great performances by Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge, The Five Satins, The Drifters, The Coastersf & many more.
I grew up to The Skyliners, and that era, and this music--these songs--live forever. Janet, we miss you so very, very much, but know that Donna has carried on beautifully these past 20+ years. GBU Jimmy, Donna, Janet, and all the guys who sang with you! Wolfsky9
The Skyliners. Baddd to the bone with that perfect harmony. Doesn't matter if they don't have the passion they once did for this classic tune. It's still baddder than baddd to me and always will be. It smokes-gorgeously. Calico records gave them some nice orchestra backing...but no money, of course!
I'm gonna join that skyliners Yahoo group, too. Thank you so much for posting this, ainzybaby.
Wow, I have heard this one for years of my "American Graffitti" soundtracks... now in person. Wow, this is just too cool. It's good to see Janet in there, too- this is the first time I've ever seen a truly live performance of hers, she's a real pro here. (RIP Janet, we miss you)
Janet and Susan, I am so glad you are fans of this wonderful style of music. And as always Paul, thanks so much for this send. This is a real find, and it's great!!
To those who have, like me, grown up with this group, I say it here: Donna Groom is drop-dead gorgeous, and she has a magnificent voice. Janet however, had the 1st " high voice", and she's also unforgettable. We miss you Janet, more and more as time goes by, but Donna carries on for you, with class, beauty, and the voice of an Angel. Wolfsky9
I did not get to see the Skyliner's live until the 80's in Hartford. Donna and Jimmy and the group were great. Gave me shivers. This is a classic. Janet, you are missed.
Janet cannot be replaced. Her voice has a richness to it that stand out even in the background harmony; she is the "sound" that can'be duplicated. It saddens me to think of what she could have become as a soloist if she would have remained with us. God bless you, Janet.
excelente musica romantica me imagino para la epoca habra sido un gran grupo... y son como volver el tiempo atras y mas si se trata de since i dont have you
21st century groups need to go back and listen to this type of music. The blend and harmony of the arrangements is unforgettable. So much heart in their performing. Cannot beat this style of music. Thank you to all those groups and single performers from this era.
I was researching on the internet and was surprised to learn that as a 14 year old, Jimmy Beaumont was discovered singing bass in an acapella group. I never heard of a bass singer who became a successfull tenor lead of a group before. Amazing! Now that's talent!!!
One final question. In this 1974 video performance, is the female singer Janet or Donna?
Ohhh yeah baby... ive got what u need, heels, toys, outfits and much more hehe .... i do what u need anal, oral, cam2cam I PLAY WITH ALL THE RIGHT TOOLS HEHE I DO TICKLE SHOWS, ROLEPLAYING AND MUCH MORE HOW ABOUT U TRY ME OUT FOR SIZE!! sooooooo beautifull eyes...tender look, artistik look, deep look, magneficent look...and many others...i can talk about my eyes so long as you even can't imagine..come visit me at - Play-Cam _dot_ COM - my user-id there is Elizabeth-rill chat soon on cam;)
Janet's daughter is my best friend and even though she had a beautiful voice...her greatest gift she left us and me was her daughter...I could not imagine my life without her in it and thank you Janet for having my best friend....should be so proud! I know I am...
Yes, it is Marlo and she has been my best friend for 14 years and could never imagine my life without that special girl in it...she is the greatest thing that Janet did...so proud of her and blessed to have her in my life.
Not to be morbid, but do you have any information as to WHY Janet passed as she did? If only someone could have helped her. I am still heartsick over her death. I am more aware of where I was when I heard of her death than any other person. I have to compliment Don K. Reed a New York disc jockey, becasue when Janet died, all he said was that we lost a great singer. He did not mention how. Bless you Jan and Thanks Don. I thought I was her sole fan all these years. How wrong I was.
Brings tears to my eyes too BruceWLA. My sister played this over and over til she had the words down pat. She's passed on as has the first female member of the Skyliners, so the memories are bittersweet. Jimmy's voice is solid and FLAWLESS and trancended all races back then. Everybody had it in their collection.
This is JB... I saw them many times during the 60s & 70s. Can you imagine, however, how tired they must be of singing these songs? If you seen them now they seem to be doing the music hypnotized. Beaumont seems to care less when you see him on the stage. They really should sing some of their other great songs in their act. They tend to sing three or four at the most and then they're gone.
Truly one of the all-time great songs of our times. I was 17 when this song was released and each time I listen to it I realize how great a singer Jimmy was and is.............
Good...but what happened to the high D at the end of "This I Swear"? The high C# at the end of "Since I Don't Have You" was good...but get rid of that annoying trumpet in the band that kept interfering with the vocal lines!!
songs like these are always memorable. they never die. plus their live performance is awesome. "Since I Don't Have You" is one of my favorite to sing. I know it by heart.
For the love of God, you may have just witnessed the greatest group of all time. Janet my love, you are just the greatest. The harmony is unbelievable, can't say enough for Mr Beaumont, God love them all.

Janet's daughter is my best friend and even though she had a beautiful voice...her greatest gift she left us and me was her daughter...I could not imagine my life without her in it and thank you Janet for having my best friend....should be so proud! I know I am...

Would that be Marlo? How lovely to think of her that way. Give her my regards..

Have you seen my other clip I made as a tribute to Janet?
ainzybaby 3 years ago
Yes, it is Marlo and she has been my best friend for 14 years and could never imagine my life without that special girl in it...she is the greatest thing that Janet did...so proud of her and blessed to have her in my life.
norwalkgirl67 3 years ago
Not to be morbid, but do you have any information as to WHY Janet passed as she did? If only someone could have helped her. I am still heartsick over her death. I am more aware of where I was when I heard of her death than any other person. I have to compliment Don K. Reed a New York disc jockey, becasue when Janet died, all he said was that we lost a great singer. He did not mention how. Bless you Jan and Thanks Don. I thought I was her sole fan all these years. How wrong I was.

I heard she had marital problems. Too bad she thought that taking her life was the only answer. She is greatly missed to this day by many.

Ran across the website publisist responsible
for the movie based on Vogal's years prior to
her death. I beleive a movie has already been
made about her life. Check their website to see if this is correct. I have not returned there yet.

Good...but what happened to the high D at the end of "This I Swear"? The high C# at the end of "Since I Don't Have You" was good...but get rid of that annoying trumpet in the band that kept interfering with the vocal lines!!

What went so terribly wrong in Janet's life that she would silence such a beautiful voice?
