People give great gratitude to this.

  • did he have to wear a white 21st century bespoke suit for this....

  • oedipus... the original mother fucker

  • @targetcxd lol!

  • Why are they wearing all modern costumes

  • @TheEmperorCho Well not modern but Victorian

  • @TheEmperorCho Why not :)

  • Could anyone enlighten me as to Oedipus's hamartia, or "great blunder"... it's still a mystery to me.... was it "anger" "pride" "determination" or a mix of all three, or something else ... what do you think? :]

  • @Chemgirl99 After reading the introduction of the book I have which explains parts of the story, I don't think that Oedipus was "full of himself" as someone might say, but he just had really good bearings of his own self and could honestly say without misgivings that he wasn't a killer/defiler and Teiserias's "claims" were false. He just had absolutely no clue of his past, because if he did I bet he would have made sure to stay with his foster parents after what the oracle said.

  • @milliperezxx1 thanks :)

  • i never knew greeks wore suits like oedipus

  • @EatShrimpPro Could you translate that into english, dumbass?

  • Anyone watching this for Classical Theatre class?

  • Anyone else watch this because Estonian History Class asks us to :D

  • THANK YOU!

  • For me it is English comp 2. Interesting note, the man playing Oedipus was in Return of the Jedi. He was the guy who was talking to Darth Vader on the landing deck of the death star, and was afraid when Vader told him the emperor would be personally overseeing the final stages of construction.

  • @6netfire What is the role of the chorus during the entire play?

  • i didnt understand shit in English class, thats why im here

  • i didnt understand shit in English class, thats why im here

  • O thankgod I found this now I wont have to read it!

  • I'm watching coz I was in it! Been an actor for 25 years now but my first job was as a walk-on in this. I'm at 3.51 in the hat and wig.

  • @philinhernehill Thats really cool :)

  • BS ends at 4:15

  • Anyone WATCHING this for FINE ARTS CLASS???

  • @Soccerboy2q YES LOL

  • Acting is too realistic for Sophocles. And the costume design is VERY inconsistent. However what is constant of the costume design is that much of it is FAR from period. It seems as if the director was making an attempt to modernize certain aspects while maintaining others. I really don't feel like that vision worked well here.

  • @cartooncritic01 cleveland high school ?

  • @johnpark96456 ...maybe...

  • @johnpark96456 chs core... ughhh here

  • accurate with the playwrite book, thanks, i appreciate this!

  • excellent movie. I specially like the Anagnorsis part and the role of theChorus in the play. i really like this.

  • I'm watching it for my finals. Fuck reading the play again. Haven't got time & I can stay in bed & revise this way. Just hope it's accurate to the text

  • The actor playing Oedipus enjoys ham too much. Think about what I said, and match it with his acting. You will understand what it means, in time.

  • @HorenziAndTheAlps The actor in question is one of the most respected classical actors on the planet. Think about what I said, and you will understand what it means, in time.

  • @57DW Respected by who? I think they give way too much respect to some of these guys.

  • Studying for finals by watching a youtube video? Fuck yeah!

  • @rhfyr91 lol i am watching the videos to helo me with the paper that i have to write. i have the book open to the play. but i am watching this instead.

  • @rhfyr91 I'm doing the same and I'm already thinking about closing this tab... I can't stand this drama class or video anymore... 13secs into it.... I wonder if I can just skip out on this test and still pass with a (B+) since I already have an (A+)...

  • Im doing this play at A levels in England for classical civilisations (penguin text) but its actually a lot better to read than to watch in my opinion. this is still great

  • We just finished this movie in school (: , Lol and we DID use these youtube videos to watch it lol

  • lmfao at 2:44!!!

  • drama assessment fml

  • Ugh, I have a paper to write and it's due tomorrow. Copying and pasting a few things , I still don't understand this.

  • why me

  • soo...i kinda thought oedipus was a greek tragety. and im watching this and it just threw me off....and i have an exam tomorrow. im high

  • @bbbfsu

    hahahahahaha

  • @bbbfsu It is a tragedy, it’s also a tragic flaw.

  • @daphneisthebest yeah i was just high and it threw me off. i was expecting people in togas and stuff.

  • @bbbfsu Looool!! That would be pretty awesome.

  • I have to read this for school but i said screw that, im searching youtube.

  • Anyone with a knowledge of Classical Theatre will realize that the acting is superb.

  • love it

  • wow..crazy

  • ive been watching this play in my classical civilisations class the past couple of weeks and i love it<3

  • This tragedy is the best according to Aristoteles. Is discovering the power and the role of luck in humen life. A question which we didn' t answer yet and I thing we will never answer. Just Sofoklis is giving his interet opinion on this philosophical topic...

  • i waited 5 minutes for the first spoken words

  • that priest has some major beef

  • seriously?? a bespoke suit??

  • An hour later and the movie still hasnt started yet........

  • Is this a dumbed down version of Oedipus Rex the written play?

  • Why is everyone so confused by the outfits? it's an adaptation set in the victorian era.

  • The first time I saw this verision was in 1993. I was in the tenth grade. Great play!!!

  • umm yeah n y do he have a tux on ..lol

  • how could anyone click "like" on a comment when they misspelled the word school, "skool"?

  • I don't understand why Oedipus is wearing a flamboyant white tuxedo when Tuxedoes weren't even made during the era this play was written.

  • Is this more like shakespeare?

  • @hairstylist80 more like shakespeare than what? jerry springer?

  • @sybyly I have to watch this for a humanities class. I didnt know if shakespeare had written a something about this. If u mean springer, well oedipus did kill his father and married his mother.

  • @hairstylist80 certainly hamlet and king lear were oedipal. and the family romance tree goes right down to springer. it's like nietzsche's theory of eternal recurrence.

  • @sybyly hmm.. i never read nietzche. I need to look into that

  • @hairstylist80 eternal recurrence = the theory we shall live the same sordid life over and over again to eternity. so make sure it's a life you can affirm ... even if it is spent watching crappy daytime tv. -- go careful with nietzsche, he's a mindfucker... he'll make you or tear you down.

  • @hairstylist80 Well, this is a tragedy and most of Shakespeare's plays were tragedies. However, Shakespeare was an English poet. Sophocles was a Greek storyteller. But to answer your question, yes, Shakespeare's tragedies and Oedipus the King are much similar.

  • @The336336336 oh ok. Thank you.

  • Who does the score

  • I have this 3 page Essay due this Monday about the concept of Humanism (man is the measure of all things) relate to the development of ancient theatre during the Greek period.

  • Not bad, but one thing that sorta bothers me but at the same time dosent, is the outfits. Why are they dressed modernly?

  • This is a really great story

  • is the Priest wearing an unbelievably noticeable bald cap? lol what

  • Thank God this is on youtube! I start school monday and I was supposed to read all 3 plays over the summer. Now I have this! Thanks!

  • @KelSIZooo Is it legitimate?

  • @johnytoreno Must be, I made a B on the test over it.

  • i really like the story of oedipus.

  • Superb, makes you realise the ridiculous shit that Hollywood has become.

  • dude u just saved my time reading this book for school lol thanx

  • I just translated this play--took me two months--thank you for posting but the play loses about 80% in translation but neverthe less.. and the Moliere!!!

You would not have ny anychanche productions of Tis Pit she;s a whore (John Ford) ot The White Devil (Webster0? again thanks

  • Oedipus wears a suit LOL, nonetheless this is a good alternative to reading

  • @OBI0131 in a way yes if you read it in english and you get a chance if I am not mistaken to watch the great cyril cusak--but the play Oedipus Turranos itself is complicated 1 why Turrannos?--not a tyrant but a ruler who came to power in an irregular fashion. as opposed to Basileus of course the irony is tat Oediipus is Basileus! ,also his name OIDIPOUS-- OI Di POUS answers the riddle of the sphynx he of two feet.--that is just for starters!

  • People seem to have lost the ability to be intelligent in front of a TV sometime in the 1990's.

    I wonder where it went.

  • I like the story but their acting was too bad.

I think they have to do it as a film is better than these parts, don't you agree ?

  • 8:40 michael jackson lol

  • Thank you for posting this!! My final is tomorrow and needed a refresher!!! I really didn't want to have to read the play! Thanks again!!!

  • owh.....i dont like the beginning of this play..its sooo mournful...i know why but its taking toooo long! haha

  • @nafertini901 it's the plague.

  • are the movie and book really close alike

  • thanks for uploading this. I needed it for school ^^
