I believe you re: the front headlock. In fact, Matt Hughes just used that exact same technique to choke a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt (Ricardo Almeida) unconscious the other night at UFC 117.
@AKAthatoneguy Yeah, I saw that fight and thought the same thing. Dave Lee, an NCAA champion at UW also used that technique very well. The trick is to cut off the jugular with the forearm on one side and his own should on the other. It really doesn't cut off the throat at all.
My wrestling coach, doug samarron at west linn high school told me how he when he was a kid, he used to bike around on a pink bike with his wrestling shoes tied around the handle bars looking for fights. Just a tough humble kid... truely the michael jordan of wrestling. If I could go back in time and meet someone it would be dave
What a Cool Guy. I saw him in Toronto once, he just kinda wandered into a coffee house. He looked like a hiker. All he did was take a look around and then leave again. Cool Guy.
Ha! Sounds just like Dave. We used to laugh how he would walk around in a cowboy hat and old ragged clothes. He looked like a hillbilly for sure. Once, we all went out to a house party in Madison. This was just after the Seoul Olympics. Dave had his cowboy hat on and we were talking to a couple freshman girls and having a beer. Dave said "I am an Olympic Champion". They laughed and he said, "No really. My brother was too". They looked at him sideways and said "Really?"....
Then he said, "Nah, I'm just the janitor at the field house", and they said "AH! I thought so!". We all laughed so hard, because it was so much easier to believe he was a janitor than an Olympic gold medalist by just looking at him. He was an awesome technician, but more than that, was one of the coolest guys and probably the greatest man I ever knew. I draw inpiration from him on a daily basis.
It makes you really hate John Du Pont doesn't it? David was one of the rare real life heros left in the world and of course he had to be taken from us. I never got to meet Dave, and that is something that bugs me.
Dave was absolutely one of a kind. I was fortunate to have him as a coach for just one year, and even 20 years later he continues to have an influence on my life.
I don't doubt that for a minute. There are some people in this life that are just that impactful and influential. I have never met anyone who knew Dave Shultz that just didn't think the world of him.
A good and interestimg video! Just a little correction: Martin Knosp (his opponent in the final) comes from Baden-Wuerttemberg, which surely lies in the (former) Western part of Germany;-)
