  • ¿what are the specifications of the machine?

  • Exellent video

  • onyx 2 deskside is strictly standalone, 2 nodeboards and 1 graphics pipe is all you can get. a rackmount onyx2 is an origin 2000 deskside with a seperate chassis that can contain 2 graphics pipes.

also those CPOP connectors can get quite pissy if you handle them too much

  • It is not exactly "strictly standalone". The units are perfectly capable of being CrayLinked together - if you replace the router boards.

    I have a five-rack Onyx2 system. Some day I'll video them :)

And, definitely agreed on the CPOP/compression connectors.

  • Would like to get a dual deskside system but with real Onyx graphics and not an octane board hacked in.

I did not know you could link the deskside "kego" units. I think it would be ideal then, to pair it with an 8x CPU origin 2000 creating a 12x CPU and IR graphics monster system in dual deskside enclosures which are much easier to handle than a rack.

  • Great video, always wanted to see the workings of these amazing machines after spending most of my young geek life lusting after them.

There's something about what was extremely expensive, bleeding edge technology that can now be found for next to nothing on ebay because nobody wants it, I may be late but one day I'll have my monstrous SGI workstation :)

  • Thank you!

I'll be doing a follow up in the next few weeks - I just picked up a six-rack Onyx2 render monster, so once I get that assembled I'll show it off, too.

  • Don't you want to sell this to me? :)

  • how much did you pay for it?

  • $25 if memory serves. :)

  • where did you buy it? can it run adobe after effects?

  • It's a little too high-end for AE. These systems were typically used to run professional compositing packages from discreet like inferno, which can handle real-time HD from multiple streams. Each software license cost tens of thousands of dollars on top of the hundred-plus thousand dollar base price of the Onyx itself.

  • @jpkiwigeek amazing how something that used to cost $5000 costs $25 a few years later
