so..a 'raster layer' is the same thing as duplicating or creating a new layer?o:

what is a new raster layer? and how do i create one on Photoshop cs5?

@08nerrd a layer is just like a peice of plastic or something, it goes over the photo and you can paint over it without harming the actual photo.

just hover over the layer tab and there should be a few little icons at the bottom, hover over each one and eventually it will pop up 'create a new layer' or something to that effect. just click on it and away you go :3
