As far as I know, most defenses are public. If you are in the early stages of your doctorate, ask your adviser or other professors to give you a heads-up so you can attend. If you do, don't be a jerk and ask nasty questions. Karma's a @#$%^. Observe quietly or toss a soft lob you know that particular individual will knock out of the park. It's the committee's job to try to stump them; not yours. At any rate, the more public defense events you attend, the more prepared you will be for your own.
well, in order to gain a doctorate degree, you have to do a very large investigation project called "thesis". When you finish your thesis, you need to explain it and defend it in front of a select board of education. Basically, you explain your investigation and the results of it. At the end, the board of education as well as the people present can ask you questions about the presentations. Teachers ask you so they can test how much knowledge of the topic you have :)
It is the final stage of getting a Doctorate degree. Usually in your eighth year of university. (four undergraduate years, then four graduate years)
This man completed the phd requirements and is now presenting his research and phd worthiness to a jury of phd holders.
I am currently in my third year of crack smoking at the masters level. Hopefully I will have my phd in about a year and a half but I smoke too much crack.
Authoring a PhD thesis is much more complicated than defending it. It is a very hard task though. I personally don't understand why would someone put his PhD defense online and particularly, on YouTube. It is ridiculous.
Well... for those of us who are considering entering a doctoral program, videos such as these are helpful. It's beneficial to be able to "see behind the curtain", and get a sense of what defending our own dissertations will be like.
ACtually, I am glad people have put their graduate defense presentations online. I am doing my defense in 2 weeks and this gives me a good idea of how the presentations can be like.
@TKostovska - I agree authoring a PhD is more complicated. Conversely I think it is great that this person put his defence on line - it is a good way to share information and the process of getting a PhD - i am just curious why do you think it is ridiculous?
you are absolutely correct..but keep in mind, your members of the committee will always prepare you ahead of time so you will succeed in defending your work.
I am a senior undergrad. My professor is pushing me to pursue a PhD. I get scared just from watchin these clips. I have heard some horror stories of students getting their PhD.
@BCUboi By the time you get to this finalstage you already know more about your topic than the professors do. You just answer their questions and concerns. I am impressed at anyone who can do this in a *foreign language* like this student...

You don't even get to this phase unless the faculty are positive that you'll pass it.
As someone else on this thread has intimated, defending your thesis is not even a challenge, as opposed to getting that far in the first place.

That's a walk in the park, guys. Sit the legal BAR and you know what I'm talking about. (BTW, I have a PhD myself).
suneku78 3 years ago
sorry but that's not much to brag about. the BAR is nothing. all you have to do is pass. you can buy study guides for it online for like $100

These things are INTENSE. I don't think there is any bigger test of knowledge than a PhD defense in front of a panel.
