Poglad, have been after these instrumental versions for 30 years now. No-one has ever posted them on the net, and emails to Midge-Ure remain unanswered. Only hope is some technician or someone else connected with the show will eventually post it at some stage..
Most presenters seemed to pronounce Depeche Mode like that, including Simon Bates and John Peel. Since the group didn't bother to correct them, I wonder if that was how they wanted it to be pronounced at the time.
It would be nice if Jimmy Saviille could announce the name of the song as well as the name of the artist, as I'm not sure of the names of the songs of these particular artists at this time. Will check them in my Guiness book of Hit Singles for the dates.
Please can somebody show a clip where it actually says "The Video Top Ten", I have been trying to find a clip of this for ages, I'm sure it was early on in 1981 and I remember all the girls at school were really excited about it and actually thought it was a Top Ten of video releases. I know that there were some Top Ten rundowns that were actually titled "The Video Top Ten", unless my memory doesn't serve me correct.
Agree with SozLike would have been nice to hear the song titles guess that was'nt written into Jimmy contract when he firsy worked for totp in the 1960's
No I think they were first used in June or July of '81. I do think these titles were a bit "rough cut" as the name of the group at the top of the screen appears a bit slanted; the box with the picture of the artist seems to be a bit over to one side.
Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in how these graphics were done, because obviously they couldn't have been using computers in the way we understand them today, but equally they weren't just using pen, paper and sticky-back plastic. Something in between the two was obviously being used.
One of those silly things I'm interested in is the little moving graphics that used to be shown at the end of each song with the name of the group. I think they were there from 1981-1988, but I'm not sure.
Yeah, that would be great. They sort of evolved over the years, starting off as pretty basic in about 1981 but they were increasingly sophisticated by the end of the 80s.

Some heavyweights in that chart. Laughed at De-phe-see Mode. Notice how they don't mention the song, just the group!

@Tim733733 Apparently that used to earn Jim'll some stern letters in the Radio Times - 'Why doesn't he identify the songs?!?'

It's amazing how far the '80s went after this. Especially with Duran Duran.

Worst number one of the 80s from Shakin' Stevens. Stevie Wonder at number two with, I think, Happy Birthday.

The first show with "Yellow Pearl" and this style of chart rundown was the 900th show, on 9 July 1981.
