this was really a nightmare lucas had of giygas. It's just claus' head because Lucas didn't know who Giygas was. Later in the battle (I think) the screen turns red like the color of Giygas in Earthbound. BUT it still has Claus' head but a more creepish look and more red so yeah... IT'S BASICALLY A NIGHTMARE ABOUT GIYGAS!!!!! (Spoiler :3)

My therory Is that this Is that lucas's nightmare Is to the Nintendo 64 version that never got released. and that lucas maybe get's knocked out and unless he wins the fight he dies after being Ko'ed for a while. much different than the gba version where he had to fight claus. I Think lucas's nightmare would of been the battle after pokey Instead and maybe pokey's gases attacked lucas after he was defeated. thus knocking him out. and no, I Do believe In N64 version there was no safety capsule.

Perhaps it's just the developer's intention of symbolizing Giygas as a nightmare to Lucas. Not that it actually was Giygas, it was just a dream. A nightmare. A what if.

Maybe it was removed because they did not want Mother 3 to associate any possibility of Giygas lingering on into the future.

I think the battle was intended for the "what if?" idea that was, "What if lucas killed the masked man, instead of letting claus realize who he is? lucas killed him instead of claus killing himself?

and this battle would've been the emotional guilt lucas got right after that, basically, lucas goes bat-shit and battles his guilt, the unused masked man sprites even proved that maybe Itoi was planning for this to happen...
