Fuck the haters, Trey's a musical genius, get on stage faggots. This was really well played for about 99% of the song. There are few mistakes musically speaking. They're not trying to sound exactly like the fucking singer of Genesis, obviously the two have different ranges and sounds of their voice and belong to entirely different bands.
By the way, in response to Lepete Tramp or whatever, KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE....c'mon dude, you learned that in your AP Speach Class in 9th grade...all good tho...u don't like them...we understand : )

Trey really didn't care...and I, on behalf on a whoooole lotta other people out there, will find themselves in life...laughing at Phil Collins at one stage of our lives’, and then seeing what a genius he was in other times of our lives...it's the "impact" that he has and the respect and open-mindedness that Trey has that makes this a refreshing song for me...
So, I can understand everyone's thoughts about Trey struggling on this song, but hey, I think it's safe to say that Trey knew he's not the best person to pull this off, but...I hope all you that carried heavy opinions saw the other you tube footages of the "hard rock indoctrination"...or whatever...don't judge my spelling now, listen to my point...
His voice is the least of my grievances. How can you suck ALL the life out of this song? There are lounge acts that play Midnight on Wednesdays in Vegas that can rip this track.
On the bright side, looks like I've found a natural alternative to Valium
its kinda like the dead... as jerry said... always blow the big shows hahaha
if you think they are unoriginal, you are retarded.. and you've probably never seen a concert so wonderful you can't talk about anything else for weeks after. Phish kicks ass, phil collins sings in a high fuckin register. trey never sings that high. they had the balls to do it up tho.
Your right they can't sing, it's no secret. They put on the best rock and roll concert you will ever see. No original ideas? They are the most original band out there. More then half of every show is improv. No two shows have ever been the same in 25 years. They sound like no one and no one sounds like them. Remember it's a cover and look at the crowd, ya think their gonna get down and dirty with all those old people in the room, this is not what Phish usually sounds like
You know they just wanna bust into "Tweezer" or something and take off those damn suits. I echo what someone else said, "I feel embarrassed for them." I've never heard Trey so out of tune. I bet they'd like to forget all about that one. I saw them for the first time two nights in a row this past June in Alpharetta, GA & they were incredible. This performance just was not them. As far as the audience goes in this clip, there was "no reply at all." I couldn't resist. Both bands are great.
The Band does a decent enough job..but the singer has no business singing Phil unless maybe at home in the shower or something. Christ, I'm a singer myself (not professionaly) and I can do this song better justice.
Sorry, but they shouldn't have tried this cover, there are so many easier songs to choose from more suited to their musical skills...well, I just happened to listen Genesis' original before this, didn't know whether to laugh or cry
Their hearts were in the right place, but this was the wrong band to play this tune. They did do better on "Watcher." However the horn section nailed it.
they just went out in front of tons of respected musicians and dropped a big steamy stinky turd. I love Phish, they are fantastic, but you would think at some point, trey and the guys would have said... "and we would like to invite Phil to come up here and sing this one with us."
I bet he would have
and it would have been sick as fuck.
This was pretty embarrassing and if I was Phish, I would be bummed that this out there.
I give them an "A" for effort. But in groove and musicianship, it misses the mark. But to end on a positive note it's good to see New Schoolers honoring Old School vintage.
Wow, hearing this guy sing REALLY makes you appreciate Phil! Its just like bad off- key karaoke. I sound better in the shower. Maybe doing his own songs he sounds ok but he has murdered 2 Genesis songs for me. More preparation would not help his sound but turning off his mic definitely would!! The horns were crap too! Painful...
The music was pretty true to the original but the singing leaves ALOT to be desired. I feel like i'm listening to a guy singing karaoke at the local bar. LOL
A lot of the problems with this performance came from the clearly underrehearsed horns. The horn parts are an integral part of the song, and here they are missing spots and notes left and right, though I will say that as the song went on they seemed to get it together- further evidence, IMO, that this was underrehearsed. A shame, but they probably should have gone with something like Turn It On Again, Land of Confusion, or Afterglow.
Yeah, this performance is pretty grisly - full of bum notes and mike problems. But it's a courageous attempt at an imaginative cover, much more interesting than the hundreds of totally verbatim covers one normally hears at an event like this.
These comments are hilarious. People like to bash Phish because they're Phish and get a bad rep at times. They're one of my favorite bands, seen 'em over 30 times. Is Trey one of the greatest singers ever? Not even close. Though this performance wasn't one of their best, it's still a good watch/listen. If any of these people had seen a live show from '94 - '00, they'd probably have a different perspective. Especially the guy who said something about Phish being known to suck live. Idiot.
Love this Genesis song! Musically, this cover is pretty good. As some have noted, Trey doesn't sound like Phil, but that's fine...true artists are unique. The bigger problem is that Trey isn't on key. With some more practice, he could nail this.
@troyhol Okay pal, I would like to see you perform on that stage sometime before I die. If you are comparing vocals between the two greatest artists of all time, then you are just mistaken. Obviously Trey's not gonna sound like Phil. The only reason Phish played this song was because Trey absolutely loves and respects Genesis.
@element1120 i can see your a huge phish fan. i'm not trying to prove a point that trey is a bad singer nor a bad artist, nor am i comparing artists. i guess looking at my original post maybe i was exaggerating a little. i still stand by my opinion though, thats all i can say.
What the hell happened here? All the elements are right: "No Reply At All" is one of their best songs from the Phil era, Phish is a terrific live band, they genuinely like Genesis, they had pro horn players, and the song's pretty straightforward. But... woof!
I agree with the other comments that Page should've sung the whole thing, however that wouldn't helped all the flubbed notes from the horns and Mike.
Look, Phish is performing at the top of their game right now, so if you haven't heard any recent shows, then just go eat a big bag of shit!!!! EVERYONE CAN EAT A BIG BAG OF SHIT!!!!!!!!
@redeyed28 Are you braindead? Im sittin watching them live right now? They suck and this version is so bad. Since im a huge Genesisfan this is suicidal
@johnslullaby Phish is constantly learning complete songs to bring to the stage and play one time then leaving them alone, hell, they learn complete albums and play them in their entirety every halloween(white album, quadraphenia, etc),I think this is a great version for a 1 time play and little practice,i dont think any other band could pull off such accuracy, not even close.Genisis picked Phish to induct them,so that should tell you something.
Awful. Ramada Inn lounge at closing time. Phish is a better band than this. They shouldn't have tried to do a note for note cover. They should have done a "Phish" flavored version.
i really think people are missing the fact this isn't some giant arena its a small ballroom I'm sure if this was at deer creek it would be a whole different sound but its great for the venue
An abomination. Simply horrid. Flat. Unispired. Just sucks. Talk about taking a song and making it ---- ssssiiiigggghhhhhh. Good job Flish! I hate you.
Dude, I really like Phish and seen them a number of times...look, thhe musicianship is fine, though not enough Trey guitar, but this is a hatchet job. I don't even like this song and I know they butchered it. Tight performance, but Trey sounds horrible. This is kind of embarassing.
I admired their Watcher of the Skies. Bold choice and their musicainship holds up. But No Reply is painful. Not shitting on them but they could have pulled something else out from the Collins era that could have worked better. Trey's vocals are just way too flat here.
Bunch of idiots...difficult my ass!!!...Just go on and see 1000s of Genesis cover bands doing it right...the piano guy sings like a little hungry boy with DIARREIA
and it is really a stupid thing to see...and the lead singer lost his sense of being

any bad times like these guys singing...in time: the band is ok!

As Phil said, this, and "Watchers of the Sky," are two difficult songs, and these songs were done with respect and love by a band that not only admires Genesis but is good enough to play the songs. And I think that's what this portion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is all about. I admire Phish for accurately playing the songs but playing it their way.
yikes.. sounds like karaoke night. they could have picked another song that was better suited for them from the huge genesis catalog lol oh well.. their heart was in it.
true true. . .Trey's strongsuit has never been his voice. . .the whole band for that matter. But they are amazing musicians and there crappy voices somehow fit Phish's music. . .seen them countless x's live and 2-28-03, 6-7-09, and 11-24-09 (my personal fav i witnessed) were all amazing in spite of lousy vocals not only Trey's but especially fishman's.
They played these songs the way Genesis did live, if not better. Trey's singing isn't his strong point, the group as a whole makes it work, playing the music the same, if not better, then the original live music is their strong point. They did an awesome job! Look up these live tunes played by Genesis. Its great! Oh, and they played "No Reply" because it had to feel great singing little jabs to the people in the music industry that ignored these guys as a fad or fraud.
this is one of my favorite Genesis songs and I love Phish, Trey is a great guitarist, but it's hard to sing like Phil Collins. He's got a very dinstinctive voice. This is still a good performance in my opinion
what do you people want? Phish to blow the doors off of Genesis's song at their own induction......they held back.......this is similar to Golden Age - and we know what Trey did to that song!
Sure Trey is out of tune a little bit and can't hit the high notes but this is a really hard song to cover. Makes you appreciate how good Genesis is and was. Hat off to Phish, no other band would have attempted it.
its decent, but still, disapointing that genesis didn't perform. very understandable though, but mike + the mechanics along with steve or tony couldve done a little something. but its all good!! one day something else might happen! :-) a lot of other bands could've done a performance also, phish just happened to be the one!! hats off to a good effort, but the vocals could've been arranged a little differently, and the drummer wasn't very on the bat with his drumming. its not that hard
in fairness to to the drumming aspect when genesis performed this live they had two drummers playing at the same time. And on the studio recording there is a second percussionist. The drums are right on time as far as i can hear.
omg. this is horrible :-O i understand that phil was unable to perform due to surgery, but he couldve sang. this is bad!! like miley cirus bad LOL. out of key and the band can't even stay together. genesis must've been yawning in their seats lol.
A lot of people don't like the song choice, because they have awkward structure, but listen to the recordings and you can see they actually did a little better than Genesis ever did (Phil Collins actually says this later that night). Only Phish is naturally better at instrumentation, and Genesis is better with vocals.
usually phish is good when they play covers ( their own tunes suck like an electrolux vacum ) . This song is not even listenable though. just terrible , page must have been embarrassed.
im a huge phish fan since like 1990.... but this is pretty shitty. maybe page should have sang the whole song. ive heard better at open mic night at my local bar. i do give props on watcher of the skies. i think phil probably has no reply at all, lol maybe it would have been better if i was seeing this at a phish show with a few beers in me!!
As a Genesis fan, I appreciated the gesture on Phish's part, although I thought their performance of No Reply was kind of ho-hum. Watcher of the Skies was much better, although I still don't think it's as good as Genesis. I disagree with Mike Rutherford in his attempt to flatter Phish.
I think the essential fault is in the drums , really, in that the sense of urgency in phils drumming is missing. Also trey shouldn't have attempted phil's vocal on this one, sorry, phil's just too strong but WATCHER ROCKED!
Needs Phil on vocals... should've tried something else. The audio guy should have been shot.... dry vocals? Sucked all of the life out of the song... appreciate the effort though.
Or Genesis could have manned up and got themselves together to play their own song. Considering it was announced late that phish would be playing makes me think they probably learned the song that day. Vocals have never been phish's strong suit but they still sounded tight.
Wow.
I have heard Trey not hit it before, but this may be the worst.
Shame, really gifted musician, but this is way out of his league, vocally.

This was OK. I think they would have excelled with something from TOTT, like "Dance on a Volcano".

Bunch of idiots...difficult my ass!!!...Just go on and see 1000s of Genesis cover bands doing it right...the piano guy sings like a little hungry boy with DIARREIA
and it is really a stupid thing to see...and the lead singer lost his sense of being
alive a long time ago...I hope one day, internet will be filtered so we don´t have
any bad times like these guys singing...in time: the band is ok!

I can sing this better.
If at first he don't succeed, Trey, Trey's his name.

As Phil said, this, and "Watchers of the Sky," are two difficult songs, and these songs were done with respect and love by a band that not only admires Genesis but is good enough to play the songs. And I think that's what this portion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is all about. I admire Phish for accurately playing the songs but playing it their way.

i love this, everyone is saying its iffy, but i love it, although i think page should have sang it still turned out great. hope to hear it on tour!
cptnjacksteiner 1 year ago
yikes.. sounds like karaoke night. they could have picked another song that was better suited for them from the huge genesis catalog lol oh well.. their heart was in it.
benjapathic 1 year ago
This is performance mix is lob-sided...you can't hear the keyboard! Listen to the original and see that you can hear the electric piano sound better.
MrStereoTiger 1 year ago
There's something seriously missing from this song. The guys from Phish are excellent musicians, but it just doesn't sound right.
theschoolofchuck 1 year ago
the singer is doing great!!!!!! to you doubters this song was not designed for someone to play lead guitar and sing as well
tweedphish 1 year ago 2
true true. . .Trey's strongsuit has never been his voice. . .the whole band for that matter.

Not too shabby. It's Phish. Take it or leave it. I enjoy it. These guys can still pull a cover like no one's business.
Smickens 1 year ago 5
They played these songs the way Genesis did live, if not better. Trey's singing isn't his strong point, the group as a whole makes it work, playing the music the same, if not better, then the original live music is their strong point. They did an awesome job! Look up these live tunes played by Genesis. Its great! Oh, and they played "No Reply" because it had to feel great singing little jabs to the people in the music industry that ignored these guys as a fad or fraud.

Musically, Phish did an excellent job on this song & Watcher but, they should have asked somebody else to sing!! GR8 song selection too!!
MrGuitaRKing 1 year ago
this is one of my favorite Genesis songs and I love Phish, Trey is a great guitarist, but it's hard to sing like Phil Collins. He's got a very dinstinctive voice. This is still a good performance in my opinion
redeyed28 1 year ago 9
@redeyed28 No it's not a good performance. It's pathetic. Phil, Tony and Mike must have been crying when they hear their song beeing destroyed.
You know what? When phish asked if they were good Genesis gave no reply at all!

1.) These songs are hard as fuck.
2.) It is probably intimidating as hell to play it in this context.
3.) I think this shit is great.

trey's voice is a joke. can phish cover any song without sounding like the high school's best at the talent show?
micahwelner 1 year ago
what do you people want? Phish to blow the doors off of Genesis's song at their own induction......they held back.......this is similar to Golden Age - and we know what Trey did to that song!
pcburgh01 1 year ago 2
why the hell didnt they have Paige sing it??? Would have been much better.
SpendonGriff 1 year ago
I think Paige would have sung better too but it could be that the syncopation on the keys was too difficult to sing over top of for him. I don't know
Funkbird 1 year ago
the high school's best at the talent show. trey's voice is a joke.
micahwelner 1 year ago
Sure Trey is out of tune a little bit and can't hit the high notes but this is a really hard song to cover. Makes you appreciate how good Genesis is and was. Hat off to Phish, no other band would have attempted it.
Shafbag 1 year ago
its decent, but still, disapointing that genesis didn't perform. very understandable though, but mike + the mechanics along with steve or tony couldve done a little something. but its all good!! one day something else might happen! :-) a lot of other bands could've done a performance also, phish just happened to be the one!! hats off to a good effort, but the vocals could've been arranged a little differently, and the drummer wasn't very on the bat with his drumming. its not that hard
mikemacjunkie1 1 year ago
in fairness to to the drumming aspect when genesis performed this live they had two drummers playing at the same time. And on the studio recording there is a second percussionist. The drums are right on time as far as i can hear.
nadamean3 1 year ago
omg. this is horrible :-O i understand that phil was unable to perform due to surgery, but he couldve sang. this is bad!! like miley cirus bad LOL. out of key and the band can't even stay together. genesis must've been yawning in their seats lol.
mikemacjunkie1 1 year ago
What clip were you listening to?
jojomellon 1 year ago
The only out of tune notes are the vocals which is pretty understandable as Phil's highest notes are a bit higher than Trey's range.
jojomellon 1 year ago
A lot of people don't like the song choice, because they have awkward structure, but listen to the recordings and you can see they actually did a little better than Genesis ever did (Phil Collins actually says this later that night). Only Phish is naturally better at instrumentation, and Genesis is better with vocals.
theseanze 1 year ago
I disagree on phish performing it better, but do think phish was the best choice of band to cover this song
Funkbird 1 year ago 2
usually phish is good when they play covers ( their own tunes suck like an electrolux vacum ) . This song is not even listenable though. just terrible , page must have been embarrassed.
ncbloom 1 year ago
im a huge phish fan since like 1990.... but this is pretty shitty. maybe page should have sang the whole song. ive heard better at open mic night at my local bar. i do give props on watcher of the skies. i think phil probably has no reply at all, lol maybe it would have been better if i was seeing this at a phish show with a few beers in me!!
lenphish 1 year ago
passionless vocals and not as puncyh and vibrant as original
Obelisk2290 1 year ago 2
im sure they wouldve done another prog song if it were up to them. those celebrities looked confused during watcher.
andrewjon 1 year ago
As a Genesis fan, I appreciated the gesture on Phish's part, although I thought their performance of No Reply was kind of ho-hum. Watcher of the Skies was much better, although I still don't think it's as good as Genesis. I disagree with Mike Rutherford in his attempt to flatter Phish.
CygnusRoc 1 year ago
I think the essential fault is in the drums , really, in that the sense of urgency in phils drumming is missing. Also trey shouldn't have attempted phil's vocal on this one, sorry, phil's just too strong but WATCHER ROCKED!
daddysevenpointfiver 1 year ago
Needs Phil on vocals... should've tried something else. The audio guy should have been shot.... dry vocals? Sucked all of the life out of the song... appreciate the effort though.
kerrygordon 1 year ago 5
Or Genesis could have manned up and got themselves together to play their own song. Considering it was announced late that phish would be playing makes me think they probably learned the song that day. Vocals have never been phish's strong suit but they still sounded tight.
nadamean3 1 year ago
totally agree, what did they plug the xlr in and turn the slider up? Sheesh, this couldn't have been reheased enough
daddysevenpointfiver 1 year ago
@kerrygordon agree with the terrible vocal mix. Phish has always benefitted from a little reverb.
