@capitalismforme..secondly you sound dumb when you assume what i know about history, because again, i dont mention anything about history in the comment (other than that when mosconi did his run the pockets were larger, which is TRUE) but hey its cool i know youre probably some 17 yr old kid whos hit a few balls around and now you think youre billy incardona...heres a clue, drink some milk, tuck yourself in, and think about how to improve on tomorrows debate class session...
@capitalismforme...if im delusional then you have dementia. tell me where in my statement did i say ANYTHING about who was it that petitioned the commission to change the pocket size?? this is NOT an important fact AT ALL! the argument is that efren is a better pool player than mosconi you dimwit, not who was the better activist for the game of billiards, did you even read what i wrote!?? you are a complete and utter moron with the desire to prove someone wrong but lacks the ammo to do so.peace
mosconi is great theres no doubting that, but efren has been known to play amazing in any billiards game you choose while willie was really just known for straight pool...and for all you people who are justifying willie as the best ever:
two reasons 1-give efren 20 more years is is just 60ish, give it time to let the "legend" title sette ln
2-mosconis 526 ball run was done with 5 1/4 inch pockets!!
todays tables are 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 and in the game of billiards, that is a HUGE difference1
@mikeywikeylikey You're delusional. You're missing one important fact. Guess who it was who petitioned the commission to change the pocket size? You don't know your history. It was Mosconi palsy walsy.
i bloody hate this miserable old get. i know hes dead and everything but he was an arse because he hated it when people didnt play straight pool because he thought they were all too easy otherwise. id like to see him play snooker, even in his prime he wouldnt have had a clue, but the truly good snooker players dont disrespect other billiards players like he did regardless of what their game is, even though their game is definetely the hardest
He sure was an amazing showman. and in my lame opinion, efren would have beat his aasss in 9 ball, eightball, one pocket, even straight pool perhaps if he were still alive.
Wrong. He did not like the luck games as he called them, but one time when he was in his prime he was challenged to a money game by a 9 ball player for $50 a game. This was during a break in a tournament when he was having lunch.
This was in the 40s when you could buy a new car for $600. He ran 13 racks in a row before the 9 ball players backer quit.
Efren might have a chance in 9 ball with both players in their prime but forget about Efren having a chance in straight pool.
I believe if Efren played Willie when Willie was winning championships in the 40's and the 50's Efren would have lost. Mosconi was the best of all time!
I believe if Efren played Willie when Willie was winning championships in the 40's and the 50's Efren would have lost. Mosconi was the best of all time! Correction, Mosconi is the best of all time!
I was also raised on the Brunswick Gold Crown tables, with built in score keepers. I was fortunate enough to have met Mr. Willie Mosconi in 1971. I was 16 at the time, and was fresh off my Eight Ball Tournament victory in Dallas. I was legally underage to get in, but "concessions" were made, and I managed to meet Willie, got my pic taken with him, and got his autograph. Thanks for posting!
I have no real preference really. I just don't like to shoot on bar tables cause you can't get any real action on the ball. My grand father owned a pool hall way before i was born and he used to have Brunswicks..... So i guess i would say Brunswick but I have no real knowledge of the different models and things. I just know that any table with a quarter slot to unlock ball return is no table for a champion.
as much as i love efren. debating between mosconi and efren is like a Tyson-Ali matchup. we will never know. Efren is truly a magician at angles, banking and just about everything else. but so far nobody in the world has beaten Mosconi's straight pool record of 526 and that was like in the 1930's. Keeping a world record for that long is freakin impressive when you consider how frequently guiness has to update their world record book every year.
In between 2 matches of 150 points each, against the 2 best local area amateurs, I once had the pleasure of accompanying my dad and cousin to have dinner with Mr. Mosconi. He was such a classy guy and a gentleman! During dinner, he had a couple of vodka martini's. My dad playfully teased him that it might affect his 2nd match. Willie smiled. Great memories!.... Oh, by the way, the score in each of those matches? 150 to 0! Willie ran out in each match! Incredible talent! Incredible focus!
Hey, do you or anybody on here have any footage of Willie Playing an entire match of 14.1 during tournament play or exhibition??? Not including the dinner exhibition with caras. Im looking for something where Willie Runs rack after rack after rack!!! There has to be some footage out there somewhere!!!!!!

Back in the 30s ol' Willie and I used to play for a dime a game. I used to take him to school I tell ya. Never could hang with me on the pool table. That was back when the tables were 10' instead of those girly 9 footers they got nowadays. Willie, he used to try to get me to turn pro, but I wasn't interested in all the travling. I was happy enough just to beat up on ol' Willie whenever he'd come back to town. Them was the good ol' days...
I agree with 1more4theroad,I've seem Willie Mosconi play several times,he was the best I have ever seen.I never saw Greenleaf play,Mosconi came after him,his high run of 543 balls is a record.
Pure class 100%,I believe his wife is still living, possibly in NJ
The man was all class. I wrote to him, requesting an autograph since he was my idol and I coult not get away to see him. Mr. Mosconi sent an autographed 8 x 10 made out to me, using his personal address as the return address. He included a program from a recent dinner show where he and others performed. The program was full of autographs made out to me, not just from Willie, but from other pro players as well! What a legend...at and away from the table! None will ever come close...none!!

Yeah. I just can't stand the thought of Brunswicks being made in China now.. As far as I know, all their models are.
I like the vintage Gold Crowns with the scorekeeper built in, personally. Made in USA. :)
Of course, they tell me that Olhausen tables are made here too.. so I don't know.

@bigalabama147 It temporarily dents the felt material and holds the ball in place better.

I love Efran Reyes. He's a great pool talent. But make no mistake, Mosconi was and is still the greatest pool player to ever grace a billiard table.

I absolutely agree. To run 526 in straight pool, the most difficult game, certifies Willie as the GOAT.
