are those meshheads noisy? i mean without the triggering of course :D Im planing on putting those heads on real shells, im just afraid that it might be louder than roland pads for example....
Those are really muffed and quiet, you will only get some noise if you hit your rims, however I'll suggest you to "fill" your snare, toms and bass with some foam or old clothes or something, I did that for my snare (also removed the snarewires of course) and its really quiet, similar or even softer sounding than an e-kit pad.
@saqib09 Orly that acoustic sounds better because those e-drum sounds aren't even close to the best, like using pans and pots as acoustic drums. But on the other hand these cheaps sounds sound more like those acoustic drums you hear on songs because they are mic'd in studio. And btw I have both e- and acoustic kits.
Yep! Hope I'll back on a band someday and I can record it, now living at home is hard for me to do something with my acoustic pearl kit T_T fucking neighbours!!
@josedistant my neighbors were bitchin at me too so what i did is just put some little styrafoam things all in my room and u cant hear nothing.just an idea
Nice video. I'm building a system like yours for home practice. Let me ask you something: do you have the mesh in your snare and the regular skin bellow? And in the toms/bass? Or just the mesh head on top?
You can use your regular skins bellow, or if you want even a quieter sound you can put a mesh head on bottom too! also I took off the snares of the bottom head and it's reaaaally quiet so you can play a lot without disturbing your familly :D is much quieter than an electronic kit because this has no plastic surfaces...
@PSlave yep it does affect the rebound, but I put some paper towels inside the toms and drums and a pillow in the bass and that worked perfect! about the double trigger it was an experiment I did to trigger two samples at the same time (one with a deep sound and one with a ringy high sound) and it sound well but it was just and experiment.. but seens that I forgot to quit that :D
Thanks!! But I find myself with a lot of technique lacking!!! I'm now receiving classes with jazz drummer and I think I'm much better now, but I will still await for a little longer till I record some other video because I want to get much much better!!
Yes because this is my drum set at home and I need the trigger sound to check my drums and I use that drum set for rehearsing and practicing. In live situations and band eviroment I do not use any trigger because I do not like the trigger sound except for rehearsing (and that drumset is made with mesh heads so "no" acoustic sound is produced)
ive just bought the dm5 module and i have 10,12,13,14 tom setup. Any ideas on what to use as when i looked through there was only like high tom, mid tom , and low tom sounds so i dont realy know what to do. Thanks chris
You can adjust the tune of each drum with the tune button close to the voice button. First select your "voice" (sound) and asign to a tom, then select "tune". You get like this: +3, +2, +1, 0, -1, -2, -3 so the more high will add a higer tone and the lower will lower the tone. I suggest you to try this: 10" >Hightom sound with +1 tune, 12" >Midtom sound with 0 tune, 13>MidTom sound with -1 tune, 14"-Lowtom sound with -2 tune...
thnaks for advice. Also iv'e heard you have to really muffle your drums to get the triggers to work properly and i was wondering what you did because they don't look very muffled. I have an e ring on all my toms and blankets in my bass drum Thanks Chris
I do not muffle any of my drums because I use mesh heads instead of regular ones. But if you want to trigger your acoustic drum you will need to muffle your kit, but may not too much, only for playing live because the bass amp could false trigger your drumbass trig. BUT you can use the threslhold and the noise gate of your drum module to adjust that. Also is a good idea to ger PRO triggers, cheaper ones sucks!! :)
YEP, it is called Velocity Curve or Vcurve on the Alesis DM5, while others called it Sensitive (roland drummodules). Also you can set the Threshold, Crosstalk, Decay and Gain. I'll explain those briefly: Vcurve: makes the sound louder or softer (more sensitive) ie: if you have higer level all the hits will sound at MAX volume, if you have low leves only the harder hits will trigger at max volumen while softer will be at min volumen. This is used for realistic human feel. (continue..)
Threshold set a noise gate for the hits to be trigger or not. Ie: if you have 60 of threshold only hits from above that intensitive will trigger the sound or no. This is used for avoiding double triggering or false triggering wich occurs when the excesive vibration of the enviroment or hit could trigger a sound that hasn't been played. Crosstalk is used for avoiding other pads to trigger your sound. IE: you hit the tom 1 and tom 2 also sounds. Is similar to the Threshold. (continue..)
Decay is used for avoiding double hits and false triggering by seting a decay of the hits, this is the time the sound is trigger or note if another hit is make. Ie: you hit twice the snare, if you have high decay only the first will be hear because the next hit occurs while the first one is sounding. If you set this very low or 0 all hits will be hear however it will trigger soft vibrations from the drumhead so you will hit once and multiple false hits will be hear... (continue)
And finally the gain is used for boost the volume of certain hits. You really need to work these settings out and try most combinations to fit your drum, drumheads, sticks size, way of playing, hardware vibration, room reverberations etc... I and most drummers that use triggers find actually that it's HARDER because you need to really clean up your technique and strokes cause, at properly settings, all failures will be hear better, so you need to be very technique. (Continue)
Ie: I thought I was good at double bass playing, and make straight 32th without flaws... but with the trigger and the meshheads it showed that I was missing some hits!!! So for people that think trigger makes you playing faster... no way, because if you play faster but shitty you will be reaaally hear (very clean hits with the trigger versus mumbling without 'em). Hope that makes sense!! By the way my overal settings are more or less: Vcurve: 5, Gain: 70, Xtalk: 60, Threshld: 60, Decay: 5.
wow thank you very much for all that info. i faved your video for that. Now i'm thinking if its about time for me to buy triggers. i have a DM5 with pads and an acoustic kit. i'm more comfortable with the acoustic but i just don't like making noise. I have the muffled heads. and i could just use the triggers instead with the muffled heads. i just hope the triggers are within my price range.
wow i loved the way the kick sounded on this is exile.
yeah the main thing i'm worried about is double triggering. i've never used triggers before. i have only used mics in studio and live and i HATE having to mic up bass because it never really sounds that great.
It's amazing, I HIGHLY recommend it, thought I have not yet got the perfect configuration (either I miss hits or I encounter double triggering witch sucks) but is mostly because of the mesh heads, with regular heads it's easier to configure. My favorite sounds are Reggae with +3 of pitch (very sharp clean sound) and specially Fusion with -1 on pitch (really deep natural sounding, it's the one used by Kevin Lane from Whitechapel on live settings and in the CD This is Exile...
Yeah Thanks!! I will soon upload new stuff, probably "Romance is Dead" cover of Parkway Drive and maybe some new Power Metal songs (Edguy or Angra probably).
Yeah they are resistant, they are Tdrum mesh heads, I don't like the feel so I adjust the pedals a bit looser for getting less rebound and fill the bassdrum with two pillows for smoothing the feel a bit. The head is tigh medium and I don't get double triggering with that configuration (althou I loose some hits at first, now my kits are harder and more precise so that doesnt happens anymore)
