If you're using an xbox, select realism mode, then press pplay game with friends. Start a new lobby. Set up the map and everything and you can continue with the bots.

360 is fun, but it's worth it to buy the game on PC if you can. That way you can aim and turn faster, and you have the almighty console (For spawning hordes of enemies) :D

now, I'm not exactly sure how ping works...but is it the lower the better or the higher the better?

the lower it is the better it is a ping of 150 is okay but if it goes over 350 it gets really laggy and you only have a ping when playing online

You want the lowest amount of ping. Ping represents the amount of seconds it takes for your whatever to respond between your client(computer) and the game server. 350 means it take 3.5 seconds to respond (which is pretty bad btw).

Realism doesn't have the auras and you have to be much closer to pick things up than normal.
