when will people learn that ninjutsu is not a martial art? It's a spying art. and the ninja themselves were samurai. Hattori Hanzo? he was a samurai! and a ninja! same with fujibayashi masatake and all the others.
I read in an article that Cuban Special Forces use shukos for climbing trees and is an advantage that they can shoot their AK-47 and RPGs with them on... NICE VID.
I don't believe for a second that shuko would stop a sword blow very well at all. It's a 3ft long razor blade vs these little hand claws. So you stop the intial blow. Whats to stop me from pulling the sword back and away and still cutting you?
@zombieinspace Probably Steven Powell or perhaps they attended a couple of Amastu medicine seminars, that set them on their way to became 'ninjutsu experts'....
Most fools don't even know there were a lot of parallel counterparts to all these close combat in Europe, they even had hand2hand, Kampfringen! And ninjas are more about stealth, as you can see in the vid, the shuriken has less power than thrown shovels, which sink much farther into wood. In standard 1 on 1 the ninja is hardly an effective killer compared to a properly equipped and trained soldier, be it hoplite, samurai, knight, mainly because of their armor. They're better against unarmed ppl.
The ninja were not opposed to the ruling classes, they WERE the ruling classes. The jutte was a tool used overtly by samurai police to ensnare swords and arrest violent criminals.
I know for TV you have to just go along with popular opinion sometimes, but on the HISTORY channel? That's only harmful.
Nothing good comes from altering history, nothing.
that's not how you throw togakure ryu shuriken, and the rope for kyoketsu shoge was actually made out of women's hair, not chain. Jutte were used by edo period police officers, not ninja. Why does he use gardening gloves when climbing with shuko? Shame on this "master instructor" for demonstrating a complete and total lack of knowledge on the subject he is supposed to be proficient at.
@chucknorrispranks excellent attention to detail! You're absolutely correct, shoge were often made of women's hair, animal hair, or chain (we're fortunate enough to have an antique here in the dojo, featuring a chain line)
and good eye with the gardening gloves, the shuko featured here were fairly inexpensive, and put on gloves to help ease the pain on our hands!
@chucknorrispranks great points. This was a blast to film, but unfortunately (as with all filming) much of the dialogue & demonstrations were edited out of the final version. As filming was directed by The History Channel representatives, we had no say in which dialogue, subject matter, or demonstrations were included in the final cut! Nonetheless, what great exposure for a limitless martial art!
@chucknorrispranks aren't ninja supposed to used unconventiional weapons neh? I think you don't know what your talking about. Why NOT use gardening tools if shuko aren't around? Far less obvious.
@chucknorrispranks i think you might be being too critical. wiki says the rope could be made out of human hair, but also horse hair, which implies that chains could also have been used. ninjas commonly used weapons that were available at the time, which were then sometimes modified. why is it so hard to believe they wouldn't be familiar with the available weaponry and use juttes too? you're telling me a ninja never went in disguise and carried one?
@biohax he's saying everything said in this video is bullshit and he's right. i've dealt with history channel, i've dealt with spike tv, i give them correct info and when they didn't want it i said fuck off.
@chucknorrispranks You are obviously the one who knows nothing about the subject...There is no ONE way to use anything in Ninjutsu. Especially shuriken...In fact, you should be able to use any weapon from any position and throw many different ways from many positions...Take a class or two and get off of your japanese anime websites and you may learn something real.
@chucknorrispranks p.s. it is not a "togakure ryu shuriken" ....the togakure ryu signature shuriken was a Senban Hira Shuriken...congrats on thinking you know something though...again when you are actually part of the bujinkan you learn things the interwebs doesn;t always get right.
@seadawg93 that's what I was going to say. If you read Minamoto's book of the five rings it plainly says that his father was a master of the jutte a sword disarming and breaking weapon. I have seen a lot of shit like this in American nonjitsu, many schools seem to be more about the fashion than the passion. I am not a person to discredit a style but it can be hard to find a good instructor that is not in it for the money.
Could someone also direct me to somewhere where I could see this eposide in its entirety? The clips put up by dragoons9009 don't include the ancient weapons.
I think Chuck mispoke. The sai of karate was beleived to originate from a farming tool. The jutte evolved from the kabuto wari "helmet breaker" which was sometimes used as a secondary weapon instead of a wakizashi. During the Edo period a police force was created that needed to capture samurai rather than kill them, so the kabuto wari was developed into the jutte to facilitate this. The Bujinkan gets the jutte more officially from its samurai arts like Kukishinden ryu, not the ninja arts.
@KochoDojo so glad to hear from another Bujinkan member! That's a great point, and an important part of study (the breaking down of the 9 schools of the Bujinkan). Unfortunately, we didn't have time to break down the history of those 9 schools, and instead grouped them into the "Ninjutsu" category.
And excellent history point, as well. Absolutely true, that the police were severely punished for killing (or even drawing blood from) samurai.
@Taicho1990 taicho i take ninjutsu i can recomend it above all other martial arts it is the best of all martial arts if u disagree u do not deserve to take ninjutsu if u want to be a ninja or a martial artist in general this is the martial art for evreyone
@crocgator44 i agree that may be hypocritical but its true no martial art is better than then any other and i take back what i said ninjutsu is not the best

ninja weren't really good fighters. Their weapons were used for assassinating their enemies from behind. Samurai kill ratio of Ninja:
1 Samurai for every 30 ninja. That's how bad ninja were at face to face combat
