I think that perhaps it works with some people (me, for example) but not with others. Personally, I am glad that I saw movies like 'A Thief in the Night' when I was a kid, though it was very B grade.
It was Jesus himself who told the story of the rich man and Lazarus. What you call 'scare tactics' may perhaps be better termed a 'warning', at least in some cases. This doesn't mean that you don't have a point. But sometimes it's a fine line to tread.
I don't think you could even remotely compare the parable of the rich man and Lazarus to using a disaster movie and footage of people dying in a terrorist attack. You have missed the point of the parable in the first place; it wasn't meant to scare people about Hell, it was meant to teach us that the things we accumulate and material belongings won't be important to us after we're gone.
I have to disagree with you, bro. The rich man begged Abraham to send someone back to warn his brothers, so that they would not suffer as HE WAS SUFFERING. The point was that they refused to believe, even as this rich man did, and was now paying the price for it. He said that if they did not believe Moses and the prophets, then they would not believe even though one came back from the dead.

Using 9/11 video footage of someone falling from the tower mixed in with scenes from a disaster movie was just wrong. When we use things like this, those that don't believe in a God or in a hell aren't going to do anything other than close themselves off even more in anger at christians' attempts to manipulate them.
Even if everything you say is true, and we do get into a nuclear war that destroys us, and you succeed in what you are doing and scare people into wanting to be saved. A loving relationship with God is utterly different in kind than coming to Him in fear.

I was raised in a fundamentalist independent baptist church where fear is the entire core of the doctrine. The rapture, armageddon, and hell were constantly being screamed about from the pulpit. I know the mindset that is always finding clues and prophecies in current events; I detest the mindset and find it repulsive.
There are large groups of Christians that can't see anything good that happens on this planet; only the bad stuff. All they can do is look forward to everyone else's destruction and the day they finally "say goodbye" to this world and its troubles. I have no doubt that Jesus is unhappy with this mindset.
For 2000 years they've been screaming we're in the "last days";my whole life I've heard that the technology to carry out revelations hasn't existed "until now" and that current events are exact copies of the events in the bible. I think we should be doing our best to love others and live a meaningful existence no matter what we think about "rapture". We should tell ppl that a relationship with God fulfills and renews you; salvation doesn't guarantee safety from pain or death.

Then He offered us a Helper to not only add more credibility to what He had done, but to help us live as He did, honoring the Father rather than honoring the flesh. I'm well aware of what atomic bombs can do. However, your analogy fails. In order for an atomic bomb to work there has to be a HUGE release of energy. Where will the release of energy be in the rapture? Since there must be one if your analogy is to work. Jesus did say some interesting things, but so have a whole host of other people. It is from these people that we should learn. For example, Confucius spoke about the family and family values 400 years before the biblical Jesus was supposed to have been born. We should learn from all of history, not just one man or one book, that would be folly.

If you are actually going to use a word like "truthers" then it comes as no surprise to me that you misinterpreted a very general comment. If you are saying that there is going to be a rapture of the christian church then i would say no, there is no truth in that.
In fact the idea of an actual rapture only came into existence in the 19th century courtesy of theologian John Nelson Darby. It is an urban myth, that has and is increasingly using fear mongering to gain support.

There are many things I disagree with in this video, but the one thing I want to say is that I was deeply appalled by the manipulative use of 9/11;specifically the footage of someone desperately jumping from the tower and falling to their death. You are missing my point. We shouldn't be attempting to manipulate people through their fear or with the threat of impending doom. Trying to scare them into heaven with fear of hell doesn't work either.

I think that perhaps it works with some people (me, for example) but not with others. Personally, I am glad that I saw movies like 'A Thief in the Night' when I was a kid, though it was very B grade.
It was Jesus himself who told the story of the rich man and Lazarus. What you call 'scare tactics' may perhaps be better termed a 'warning', at least in some cases. This doesn't mean that you don't have a point. But sometimes it's a fine line to tread.

I don't think you could even remotely compare the parable of the rich man and Lazarus to using a disaster movie and footage of people dying in a terrorist attack. You have missed the point of the parable in the first place; it wasn't meant to scare people about Hell, it was meant to teach us that the things we accumulate and material belongings won't be important to us after we're gone.

I have to disagree with you, bro. The rich man begged Abraham to send someone back to warn his brothers, so that they would not suffer as HE WAS SUFFERING. The point was that they refused to believe, even as this rich man did, and was now paying the price for it. He said that if they did not believe Moses and the prophets, then they would not believe even though one came back from the dead.

........and they would not believe if a person tried to scare them with disaster movies and 9/11 footage either.lol I'm not a bro...I'm a sis. ;) The rich man realized he'd wasted his whole life worrying about himself; it wasn't until he was dead and "paying the price" that he thought about his family and other people. Poor Lazarus who had nothing was raised up and the rich man cast down. There was much more to the parable than a warning about hell.

Using 9/11 video footage of someone falling from the tower mixed in with scenes from a disaster movie was just wrong. When we use things like this, those that don't believe in a God or in a hell aren't going to do anything other than close themselves off even more in anger at christians' attempts to manipulate them.

Even if everything you say is true, and we do get into a nuclear war that destroys us, and you succeed in what you are doing and scare people into wanting to be saved. A loving relationship with God is utterly different in kind than coming to Him in fear.

Perhaps, but then again, better that a person should come in fear than not at all. We are to 'work out our salvation with fear and trembling', God's great love notwithstanding, which people of course also need to know about.

Actually no; it is not better. Anyone that only believes in something because they're afraid not to is going to A.) stop believing eventually and B.) become bitter and angry. If the only reason I saw to have a relationship with God was because I was afraid of the upcoming END OF THE WORLD I would reject God utterly for being cruel and vindictave.

Unless you later came to learn the WHY of it. Anyway, I can only tell it how I react to it. Not everyone thinks the way you do, just as, admittedly, not all think the way I do. But yes, as you say, there must be more than just fear as a reason; they must also know of God's love, and the reason Christ came to this earth. I appreciate your comments.

I was raised in a fundamentalist independent baptist church where fear is the entire core of the doctrine. The rapture, armageddon, and hell were constantly being screamed about from the pulpit. I know the mindset that is always finding clues and prophecies in current events; I detest the mindset and find it repulsive.

There are large groups of Christians that can't see anything good that happens on this planet; only the bad stuff. All they can do is look forward to everyone else's destruction and the day they finally "say goodbye" to this world and its troubles. I have no doubt that Jesus is unhappy with this mindset.

For 2000 years they've been screaming we're in the "last days";my whole life I've heard that the technology to carry out revelations hasn't existed "until now" and that current events are exact copies of the events in the bible. I think we should be doing our best to love others and live a meaningful existence no matter what we think about "rapture". We should tell ppl that a relationship with God fulfills and renews you; salvation doesn't guarantee safety from pain or death.

I'm well aware of what atomic bombs can do. However, your analogy fails. In order for an atomic bomb to work there has to be a HUGE release of energy. Where will the release of energy be in the rapture? Since there must be one if your analogy is to work. If there is not a release of energy or a source of this energy, then we can send it to the realms of science fiction, which you oppose.

Jesus did say some interesting things, but so have a whole host of other people. It is from these people that we should learn. For example, Confucius spoke about the family and family values 400 years before the biblical Jesus was supposed to have been born. We should learn from all of history, not just one man or one book, that would be folly.

Well, on average a species survives for 6 million years. We have another 4.5 million to go. Of course, we could go much sooner, but personally I have enough faith in humanity to pull itself through most crises.

Anyone who still belives that the world was made in 6 days, 6 thousand years ago, there was a universal flood for which there is no geological evidence, that all the animals escaped this flood by floating two of a kind on a boat, and that a man lived 3 days in the stomach of a fish has no credability in any matter including matters of ethics and morals.
