Wonderful "messa di voce" on the last Eb. That was a baritons' year in Cardif. I think he won that year's competition with B.Terfel being content with the Lieder-award. I wonder who would be the winner today.
Thank you SO MUCH for putting this up. I heard him sing this a few times, and it's still lovely, but quite different, lower and deeper. This youthful rendition is just lovely. (Also saw him as a very good Rigoletto and a tremendous Evgeny Onegin... bliss.)
Sublime ! His Cardiff singer performances were all spectacular. Have you ever seen such a beautiful man ? But I feel a bit sad seeing this. Whenever I hear him singing those same pieces later in his career it's never as good. The gorgeous base tones seem to have disappeared. He's still a great singer though.
What on earth do you (coryiasleep) mean by saying "he sounds soooo Russian despite what he's singing"!!! He IS Russian and is singing the quintessential Russian lyric baritone aria from Tchaikovsky's Pikovaya Dama. I guess you ARE asleep. Anyway it's a wonderful performance and an aria to which this lyric baritone is well suited.
See the Cesari Siepi videos "O Tu Palermo" and/or "Some Enchanted Evening". The Giorgio Tozzi duet with Nicolai Gedda from the Bartered Bride is also very good. Siepi and Tozzi were the lead basses in the world in the fifties and sixties.
Offically got a hard on here lol.
