What a clip!!... So interesting that this star of the silent pictures was able to pull off this number in such a triumphant fashion. This is what separates the real stars from the pretenders. I read somewhere that she was approached to play the role of Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard"... One can only imagine... Great stuff; thank you for posting this!
I love the way she vamps the king (who of course she cannot touch) and then turns to another older man and smokes his beard so sweetly -- using him as a sort of proxy. Such excellent staging.
All kidding aside,I'm a woman, but I still say, that that was one hell of a sexy performance, and if I were a man in the audience, I'd probably have followed her from the stage...while drooling
This woman had it!! Wow she was emotional, sensual, and Sexy, What I am Trying to Figure out is how Youtube is actually able to transmit Pheromones from 1932 to the present, via a downloaded 16mm duped (Probably 4x from the focus) Whatever they are doing, they have certainly achieved a technical marvel!! ;-) TD I love her whistling.
What instincts that woman has! Everything she does is perfect. The moment when she lets her arm fall and the cigarette go limp, and then her head follows -- everything is so perfectly judged. The appreciation for the applause and then the amused expression as she wonders why the audience is being hushed -- priceless.
What a spectacular, fascinating clip. I love the German Expressionist stage backdrop behind Pola (check out the angle of the street lamp), her Edith Piaf-style little black dress and the way she sings her Weimar-style chanson in such a guttural Polish accent ("I luff heem!"). Her song even has a whistling solo!
Wow! What an electrifying, riveting, glorious performance!! I've known this song for years, but have never heard it performed like this!

I just saw the movie last night. Very nice, quality from 35mm and much nicer than this clip.
I wish her leading man had been someone a bit more romantic than Basil Rathbone -- and according to her autobiography she did too!

I'm shure she was thinking of Rudy. In here autobiography she said the greatest love of here live was Valentino.

I'll tell you, this is a sexy song. I am jealous of Pola because she had Rudy, but she is sexy here. I like how the song is sung real slow. Sexy.
