Alright emd 80 mac leading this fast Q, I still can't believe that this is a loco that came out in the 90's it still looks more modern than the AC's and the sd60's
Man, the SD80MAC's are awesome!! Too bad only 28 were ever built. From all accounts, they really were/are outstanding locomotives didn't have any of the bugs that plagued the SD90MAC's. They were extremely unlucky in that they were considered TOO powerful. Railroads would try to replace FOUR SD40's (12,000 HP) with just TWO SD80's (10,000 HP) but half the power would be lost if one of them were to eventually fail like all locomotives do. Not sure how that is the fault of the locomotive.....
living in Texas i know little of Conrail or it's inheritors. can anyone tell me how many SD80's were built?? since they are once again the most powerful locomotives in north america & are the only units other than the SD45 (& variants) to be built with a 20 cyl. prime mover they have peaked my curiosity.
Normally I don't care for pacing footage too much, but this is an exception. I loved every minute of it and wished that it was much longer. Video/sound quality are very good - especially shooting through windshield glass. And how lucky to have a road that parallels the tracks for so many miles!
Nice Catch here, I have only caughten 2 of these monsters on film, for NS yet not leading. I am hoping to be able to catch one of these here some time soon for CSX. Maybe this summer.
80MACS are very rare south of the Mass and PA area.. That is a real catch in itself to see some of these 80MACS in their original final Conrail scheme. But to catch on in CSX colors.. First for me..
Awesome video! I love the look of 80 and 90MAC's, they look so much more powerful than the new ACe's. Ive never got to see one in person but hopefully ill catch one someday too.
Atlanta could definatly be the terminus of 612 but I'm not sure. If they did run the train through to Hamlet it would likely be there now seeing that this was late yesturday afternoon. Of corse my hope is that turn the locomotives and run them back to Montgomery on one of the sister trains like 611. Southbound light id SO much better on this line so maybe I'll get lucky tomorrow with the great weather we have in store.
Agreed, it would have been nice to see blue & white coming down the home rails. Is this the origional horn on this unit? I thought they a different tone thin this one.

Last year I caught an 80MAC in CR patched paint. It's BIG

There are no SD80MACs in Conrail paint anymore, the last one succumbed to the paint brush last month.

Lucky you. I don't think I've seen one after the Conrail split and that's going on 10 years!

I use a RAM mount that has a suction cup on the windsheild, a 7" arm & a mount for the camera on the other end. It's quite handy for pacing shots.

Awesome Job Greg. Where is that CSX Train going to?

I believe 612 runs from New Orelans, LA to Hamlet, NC

Q612 is NO to Atlanta i believe. I would be rather pissed if it ran to Hamlet as that would mean i missed this beast!

Nice catch and good pace, truely a one-of-a-kind SD80MAC video. Too bad 4601 was repainted in October, I wish CSX was not such a heritage killer.
