Such a phenomenal stalwart, tireless enthusiast and one-of-a-kind contributor. Spent time with him in the early '70's. He (we) would stay up till 1:00 - 2:00 in the morning talking endlessly and knocking out ties as he spoke. Wonderfully possessed as it were, so viscerally studious and knowledgeable.
I'm new to fly fishing and will attempt to tie my first Elk Hair Caddis tomorrow. Thank you so much for your contributions to the fly fishing world Mr. Al Troth!
Great to see these two legends here. Thank you so much for your contributions. I too wish I were Al's son, what a great teacher to have! Thank you for posting this video.
I fished with Al Troth in 1979 and learned to really fly fish, not just fly cast. I now live on the Beaverhead, where Al is a living legend. God Bless you in your retirement and thanks for both the inspiration and the memories.
I wish I was his son. He got to learn from one of the best in the world. I have tied a few elk hair caddis. I am glad I got into it a 15. Its a better hobby than video games. (:
Al, No one that i know of ever leaves home with out the Elks Hair Caddis! It is a standard in the flyfishing world. As well as others of your famous flies. Like the terrible troth. You are a pioneering legend enshrined in the world of flyfishing legends and folk lore, such as Lee Wulff, Skues, Clouser, etc....... I bow my hat as well as my rod to you! Thanks Al!!! The best dry fly i have ever used~!

who is Lee Wulff and why has he got 3 surnames? I've never heard of an Elk Hair caddis and I'm sure not many people have. Anyway, I have invented a fly which people wont leave home without. Forget your Moose Hair Gonad or whatever that fly you mentioned was. I have Cockbreath's Gnat. It is a 2 foot long beaver tail with a 6 ounze pyramid surf sinker bound to it with bright orange lead wire. So far I have killed 16 fish using this method. Unfortunately I am now banned from the local aquarium.
Mr.Troth i hope this message reaches you as i have been wanting to thank for over 25years. Your pattern the"Elk Hair Caddis" was my first fly to catch multiple fish with. I now refer to this as giggle fishing. Thank You!
Just tied a few elk hair caddis. Just wanted to compare them with the best. Thank you for the great video.

Al Troth is probably the most under-appreciated legend of our sport. Thanks a ton for posting.

I tyed thes up a few years ago and all ways have 10 to 12 of them in diff color. Because if you have rizing fish you can NOT beat a elak hair caddis.

The camera man or question asker sounds like Kermit the frog. Al Troth created some awesome flies.
