Sagan, could understand perhaps a portion 0.00000000000000000001 of the things of God. Perhaps, if he is in heaven now by God's mercy ... he must be thinking: "My God, how I was ignorant and blind - What peace sublime, What infinite wisdom supreme beauty in holiness in this place unexplained ."
Carl Sagan's early death aged just 62 was one of the greatest losses imaginable to the human race. Few men in history have ever said so clearly why we should put aside our petty. childish and self centered passions and work together, not like the Borg but as a free, united collective of individuals all pulling in the same direction. Politics, religion and ethnic division keep us in chains and anchored in all the follies of our primitive past.
Laperreux the French man of science will be remembered in a positive light......but Cortes and his ilk will be forever seen as common pirates, murders, thugs, rapist's, its as if Spain emptied its prisons on the beaches of the new world!
The Spanish christians who invaded the Aztecs also took with them the mayan/aztec myths of the 'end of the world' as regurgitated by doomsday-cult christians today (see youtube for many 2012 videos) all religion is a sham, beware of the sooth-sayers (Eschatology) towards the end of 2012 many will be abused and scared by the christian BS borrowed from myths long since past, the only thing that will stop Dec 21st 2012 from being a success for these manipulators is Dec 22nd 2012!
@b6gm6n Yet, all it takes is a pissed off country with few nuclear bombs...or a deadly virus bomb...or...? to make the doomsayers look silly. The only thing that will make for any given day to come about is the decision on our parts not to end things.
My comment had nothing to dow ith your religious beliefs or lack of. I agree with you about all being stardust, and i think it's magical, we are connected with and to the Universe at atomic level, how more intimate communion do you need? What else to realize there's no differences among us, for all the different we are? I pointed to your "SOME illusions" phrase, nothing else. And it should be Hydrogen, Hydrogen. Basic brick.
Will not you prefer some realities rather than some illusions?
Don't get me wrong here, i like a good movie or a good book as much as anyone.....but once the book's closed, and the film's over, i tend to stop thinking in illusions, and come back to see where i'm walking.
Well, he was an atheist. That means that he also believed, as he said in many ocassions, that we would be best off without any religion/faith. Now jonesgerard is saying it as a "negative thing", in which case i'd agree with you. About the "religious quotes", they weren't "religious" but just common knowledge that he found common about the same subjects in different cultures, none of them seen as "superior" to the other, and almost always portrayed as myths.
Because as far as i know, he said many times that he couldn't believe in a god who was "good" and "let evil run rampaging", and "is god was not ethically good, then why should we take it in count?" (SIC).
I can't see an agnostic in those words...
Believing in the existence of something more powerful than we are doesn't make a person an agnostic. It makes him only an open minded person.
His book contact for a start, where they pick up a message from "the universes creator". While it turns out different later, admitly, he was never the kind of, uh "hardcore" atheist who
An agnostic believes in god, but doesn't believe in any official religion as a way to explain "him/her/it". The very concept of a "god" takes for granted that this "entity" is somehow "taking care of us, watching over us, judging us, guiding us, whatever". While an atheist clearly thinks that we are alone, and the judging and guiding must be done by ourselves for and over ourselves. Which doesn't rule out the existence of "something" more powerful.
Your're getting an agnostic confused with diest. An agnostic takes a neutral position, claiming that there is no evidence either way. A diest believes there is a God or some kind of life force or something but doesn't subscribe to any religion.
/agnostik/ • noun a person who believes that nothing can be known concerning the existence of God.
As i said, an agnostic believes in god, but claims that his nature can't be known to man. Therefore, he has "faith in the existence", but rejects all religions who "try" to "explain the mystery of god".
While an atheist simply rejects the idea of a god existing.
"One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God." - American Heritage dictionary. You see, what you have done is taken the bit about God as that they believe in God. They believe nothing can be known concerning the existance of God. That means even His existance cannot be known or unknown.
Look, gnostic means knowledge, agnostic translates litterly to aknowledge, or lack of knowledge, just as theist means belief in God, while atheist means lack of believe in God.
With the exception of the religious fanatics, on the book nobody believes the "Message" comes from "the creator of the Universe".
It's explicitly stated that the scientists who catch the message believe it to be from an extraterrestrial form of intelligence, and use it as a way to make the planet understand that the most important tasks must be done together, or they will not succeed.
That idea has nothing to do with any religious idea......
Actually, the Mesoamericans had a superior astronomy and mathematics to the Europeans......the only technological advantage the Spanish had was gunpowder weapons and metal armor.......basically only superior killing technologies. The Spanish were a good example of what Christian culture is all about: greed, destruction, ignorance, intolerance, and low culture.
You know, using Sagan's work to do an apologetic expression of intolerance is really sad.
If anything, he was for all the good things in all religions, and against all the intolerance in all religions, although he wanted to relieve Humankind from the jail of all religions, he never spoke in favour of one and against others.
That isn't exactly what he was saying now was it? His point is clearly that intelligent, peaceful exploration and respect for other human beings is the wise way for humans to develop. I think being a TV show he is allowed a little artistic license to get the point across.
Weeping for the azecs... That's pc era at it's peak :) I't easy to forget how that things have actually gotten a little more relaxed over the last 20 years.

If i would guess, he was spiritual in a new and open way. Still he was well connected to the discipline of science.
Science and spirituality doesn't have to fight a war on each other. They can evolve each other to a new level.

"I'd think that was obvious to anyone, but sagan had an anti-religion axe to grind." - jonesgerard
Oh really? Then why did he reference a religious quote early in this video?

Shit that failed bad. It was meant to say hardcore atheist. But regardless, I don't think it matters if he is agnostic or atheist.
