Anyone involved in historiography is aware that it is damn near impossible to "know" anything regarding history. Bottom line: If you weren't there in person, your guess is only as good as anyone elses.
But regarding the video: what I wouldn't give to pilot one of those ships XD
@sirseigan Actually you don't know much of anything and please don't compare yourself to me I am way smarter than you in all aspect of history. I know what Viking means and I even know what Nordic means as well.
Vikings are from Norway due to the fact of Historical account and Haplogroup.
I hope you know Viking means Pirate raid. And Nordic mean countries make up a region in Northern Europe.
So you just been owned and I exposed you much of an idiot you are.
Quite annoying that they only mention norway in context with vikings. Its a Norse culture and they should have mentions, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland - all different but closely connected and all part of what we say is "vikings". Also the should have said that only ONE helmet is recoverd from what is known as the "Viking age". Alot of helmets is found before and after but not during.
@sirseigan You are completely right. I can't believe how they can make a show and not even do so much research as to find out that "Scandinavia" isn't just a synonym for "Norway". They are missing a lot of really, really important details. Hell, not even details, but basic, primary stuff!
At least they're trying to clear things up concerning the "horned helmets" ;)
@Mandrakil They didnt miss nothing. You have to remember it is only a 1 hour show and this show is about the warrior and weapons. They got the basic down and that is all matters
@LoneMyth It takes just a few seconds to say what countries the vikings came from. In a 1 hour show, you should be able to spare enough time for that.
Otherwise, they could just have replaced every instance of "Scandinavia" with Norway. What's the reason for including the term "Scandinavia" if you're not going to tell you viewers what it means?
@Mandrakil Viking are the people who are from Norway. Viking spread there terriorties in countries like Denmark, Sweden, etc.
That does not make people of Denmark, Sweden, etc Vikings. Let me give you an example when Goth invaded Rome that doesn't make the people of Rome Goth. Get my point.
@Mandrakil The Vikings were originally adventurers from the coast of Norway and quickly began raiding and settling areas of Sweden, Denmark, Britain, France, Sicily, Iceland, & Russia. Just because they settled more heavily in Scandinavia doesn't make all areas of Scandinavia able to claim they were Vikings and that all of its people are descendants of the Vikings. It's not true. The people came off the coast of Norway...plain and simple fact. Everywhere else were Viking settlements
@Mandrakil For those who truly wish to claim they are descendants of the Vikings, whether they are from Norway, Sweden, or Britain, should have a haplogroup test to see if they actually share the same ancient dna as the Vikings and are therefore likely possible descendants. Otherwise they can only claim that the Vikings settled those locations where they currently live but it doesn't make their ancestors vikings. Anyone can migrate into a location and attempt to claim the rich history...
@LoneMyth Genetically Danes and Norwegians are much alike, swedes are actually more related to Germans . But the word "Viking" sure enough came from norway (viken)
@sirseigan Actually it is only Norway who are the viking not sweden and not denmark. The two country are trying to calm the accomplishment of Norway that makes me sick.
Norway conquered many places like Sweden and Denmark but Sweden and Denmark can't call themselves Viking that is simply stupid. Sweden and Denmark doesn't share the True Viking Norway.
@LoneMyth dude you got something wrong here Norway is no way near the only viking state hell norway wasn't even norway at that time, nor was sweden the only country that was named in that age was Denmark, I am not denieing that norway was a great viking state but to say sweden and Denmark wasn't is just idiotic, just look at the islandic edas and songs of viking warriors like Sigurd or Regnar Lodbro.
@Carlle123 Actually Norway is the first Norway viking. They invaded other lands and spread there territories like Denmark and sweden. That doesn't mean Denmark and sweden viking does it.
By your theory should England claim viking as well.
@LoneMyth Could you please come up with a reason the Danes and Swedes weren't vikings? What was the difference? Why were the Norwegians vikings, if the Danes and Swedes were not?
@LoneMyth Denmark conquered England, and northern France. The norwegians were bistanders who helped. Denmark and Sweden are the real vikings according to history.
this dude is annoying. he keeps bothering the sailor while he's trying to control the sail. and he grabs the helmet out of the other guy's hand without even saying 'please'.
@Varangian1915 he is the best part of the show. He ask if he can help and the sailor said yes. And the Helmet he ask and allow them. Remember this is his show and you are watching it.
@MisterSunson i'm swedish and the only way i am able to read wth you are writing is by mixing japanese and american accents into the swedish one and it sounds like some swedish words but the way you write them is so odd
That Vendel-ish helmet is all wrong. Not only is it a horrible reproduction, but the original was still many years older than the Viking Age. NOT a Viking helm.
Hammering the bloom up to 40 times, then repeatedly folding the solid piece until carbon is well distributed and impurities burned out. ... I'd know who to hell came up with the idea only Japanese perfected this technique? Those "ignorant western barbarians" figured out how to make their own katAnas before the japanese sword was even developed!

There! Seaxes made same way as japanese swords! Proven by science!
@Protherium Well a katana is way different than a battle axe. Although Japanese kabuto helmets had many different forms including ones that had horns sticking out making the samurai wearing it look like a demon from hell so that is not entirely untrue. Proven by archaeological museums around the globe. Especially the Tokugawa clan had sent as a gift of diplomatic nature a couple of samurai suits to king Henry of England. I believe they are on display in London museum even nowaydays.
@ArchEnemyNemesis1 Yes from a battle ax but not from a sax-sword. A "ordinary" vikings sword and other odinary swords and katana is very diffirent in it's behaviour (flexible and two edges vs stiff and one edged) although the technic of useing a 1300 longsword and a katana is very similar. The behavoir between a longsax and a katana (not to mention the wakizashi/Shoto) is more alike - stiff and one edged.
BY mid 11th century, Normands having conquered South Italy, they organised a new kingdom, fairly solid, and from there they attacked mainland Greece at a time there were only regional guards to stop them however in the first raid the were pushed back but in the second they had some success and they even raided from west to the south before being pushed back but only after having taken considerable loot - of course Venetians once more were behind all that affair.
Constantinople did not fall under them although they did fight in the beginning. however by the 10thC a group of elite viking guards were used for the protection of the Byzantine emperor at later stages. Harald led the group of Scandinavian mercenaries who formed an elite group fighting for the Byzantine emperor's army.
@Salvus967 Indeed. Actually the first Vickings the Eastern Romans (Byzantines) saw were the Russian Varangians and they first met them as traders, then soon as raiders. However Byzantines beat them fairly easily in their 3 successive raids since unlike the states of northern Europe them they had a tactical hyper-technological army that Vickings did not know how to beat - Vickings came to admire the Byzantines (also for their culture) Byzantines came to recognise their bravery and martial skills.
@Salvus967 In the following century (10th century) Russia had become orthodox and an alliance was made. The Russian king married a Byzantine princess and as a gift he sent 6000 Varangians (Varangians still constituted much of the Russian army) who became the Imperial guard. They became quickly famous for their skills but what Byzantine Emperors loved most in them was their loyalty contrary to local Byzantine troops which could be used by any general or aristocrat against the Emperor.
@GPlinthon Then in the 11th century another Vicking group met with the Byzantines. These of course were the Normands who came from France, and attacked South Italy. In the beginning, Byzantines had successes against them, employing also the eastern Varangians. However, at the end the bad politics of the Katepano (byzantine governor of South Italy), the tides turned against them - Normands were also pushed by - who else - the Venetians who, while outside, used every way to rise inside the Empire.
The last part with the helmets, I think, clearly shows WHY the Vikings are more important than any other 'barbarian' tribe. Being able to first raid, then learn, adapt, and finally export ideas or goods versus taking then discarding. A lot of people forget that while Vikings were raiders in Western Europe, in Eastern Europe or around the Black or Caspian Seas they were traders. That ability outshines their martial prowess in my opinion.
I think Terje might be techno viking????
