Wow! My dad had something very similar to that under our carpot next to our house to provide emergency power to our house when I was a kid in the mid-sixties. It made a booming noise during startup.
Once I realised that it was never going to stop that way I tried using my hand!! Neither worked!!
We have just started stripping an old box trailer as its my intention to permanently mount it. I plan to have it finished by April as I want to show it at Trivithick day. I will record it running so will update Youtube.

Just thought id say also the engine is probaly 1930s and is a Lister Cs diesel
Also for easier starting there should be a decompression lever on the exhaust valve pust rod
