Johnny Speight created Alf Garnett as a figure of ridicule. Warren Mitchell played him very well despite lots of hassle from the wider public about his characters racist taunts. Alf was supposed to be a character that no one wanted to aspire to!

Indeed, some people find it hard to separate the actor from his act. I like Garnett yet he goes on about Micks. I worked with people like him and was able to hit back at them by going " shut up Alf Garnett" Warren Mitchell was himself Jewish and used to go on about the Yids. i know it was written as irony, but the affect is that of Al Murray today you mostly agree with him or a least know where he's coming from, with the odd bit of irony coming through now and then as it does with most comedy characters (e.g. captain mainwaring, the classic mild snob not getting into the golf club being a good example)
