originally,Gene Roddenberry was hoping to get the monday night 7:30 time slot for Star Treks 3rd season, but NBC gave that to Rowan & Martin's Laugh In and instead gave Star Trek the friday night 10:00 "kiss of death" time slot and the rest is history. near the end of the 3rd season NBC moved Star Trek to tuesdays at 8:30 but by then the damage had been done and it was too little to late to save it.
It's said that the move to Friday or Saturday nites is the kiss of death for a show. Cuz nobody would watch tv on what are usually considered 'party' nites.
Im om season 2 now, im a young one compared to when it was out, 23 to be exact and boy, i do love this show, it has charm, it has passion. Its so fun:)
it was on monday for the 3rd season, but it was against Laugh-in - which was hip for the time. now, i am not sure is laugh-in was on NBC and it replaced ST
or if it was against it on another network and NBC knew it would lose that time slot (neilsen ratings were in effect then too and very strong)
The blunders of NBC made this a cultural icon..Then it was rumored that in 1971 NBC wanted to talk the late Gene Roddenberry about bringing it back, But Gene, to his credit, enjoyed the benefits of syndication
@ drew: promos were made by the network and distributed to local stations. They were personalized by the stars of the show, using their voices to create individual station IDs for the local station as tag lines at the end of the promos.
@DREWtubeStreet My guess would be that the editing job was badly done (because you clearly don't hear the full set of call letters), but at the time, it would have been WCKT -- now WSVN -- that carried NBC.
@jctheradiodude the station now carries Fox - which did consider, but then passed on, airing TNG, but would air the 7th Star Trek movie (Generations) later on
This why I'm very glad that Star Trek The Next Generation was broadcast in first-run syndication. Man I wish Star Trek Enterprise was broadcast in first-run syndication too then it would have never fallen in the same fate as TOS! It gotten a lot better in Season 4!
Star Trek got the friday night 10:00 time slot, the kiss of death time slot for its 3rd season.one last slap in the face from NBC. which so pissed off Gene Roddenberry that he quit the show.
But he came back for the motion pictures and the Next Generation (which was the first Star Trek that I was introduced to, first one I really got into and fallen in love with then the rest, and because the thanks for my dad being a fan of the original series)! Now I love all Star Trek and own them all! Captain Kirk and Picard are both the best but overall I love all 5 captains and all 5 Star Trek Starfleet crews from TOS to ENT! :)
The story was, "STAR TREK" was considered for Monday nights at 7:30pm(et) for its third season, but one factor kept that from happening: "ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN", which suddenly became NBC's #1 show on Monday nights at 8pm(et) in early 1968. The network didn't want to lose its ratings momentum by moving it to another night, or "take a chance" by scheduling "STAR TREK" its its place, so "LAUGH-IN" stayed where it was (right after "I DREAM OF JEANNIE"), and "TREK" moved up to 10pm on Fridays..
I think its original showing during season 3 was supposed to be Mondays at like 8:00 or something. Then for some reason they just all of a sudden got booted or something. May have been the end of the series but not the end of the saga that's for sure. Long live a cultural phenomena!

Loving the low-key lighting on the set. Wish they did more of that in TOS!

Captain Kirk said something about a TV station in Miami. What does that mean?

@The StarTreker Then again Voyager ran for 7 seasons on UPN.

Man this promo is so cheesy and bad with today's standards but don't get me wrong the original series is still great! :)

If Star Trek The Next Generation had been on network TV, it would have been killed by the sixth episode.

Every show in this preview is from the second season.
Why is this a third season promo.
AlanDMoore 2 years ago
The Third Season might have not been filmed yet so they used stuff from the previous season.

@Xwingpilot it got moved to friday because after gene rddenberry left the show producers kind of lost hope.
also why season 3 ended up not being as good as 1 or 2

@GreekRoyalty Well, fortunately Fred Freiberger isn't around to kill programs anymore.
