@Noskee88 Yes, and it's complete and utter shit. Sure, it's finally got all the extras, but they completely messed up the transfer. I did a video about that edition as well: watch?v=DZ5i78Ihmi4 I'm still sticking with my DVD set until Fox actually does it properly.

@loveaction12 thought I covered that pretty clearly in the video. It's not about caring about the cover. It's about the SAME cover as a previously released special edition being used for a re-release barebones edition being misleading to the unwary buyer. If it's a different edition, it should have a different cover to differentiate it from the other editions.
@MrJoshuabutcher No, YOU buy the disc only for the movie. Film buffs like me are just as interested in the behind the scenes material as the film itself. We are interested in the creative process of filmmaking, not just the end result you see on the screen. So the extras have major value. Plus it's the simple fact that if such material was available in a previous edition, it should be ported over to the new edition. It devalues the product because you're getting less content at a premium price.
@AlaskanYeti When did I even IMPLY that I didn't like the Alien movies??? The first two are among my all time favorite movies ever. I suggest you watch my in-depth review of the Alien Anthology DVD set I did a while back.
@Zaranyzerak oh you misunderstood me, I wasn't talking to you, I was speaking in general terms because i know many people who don't like them. My bad.
@Zaranyzerak whoops, I spoke in a confusing manner and you misunderstood me. I wasn't speaking to you, but in general terms, referring to those who don't like them. My bad.
why buy 3 versions of movie. and being a collector and all and trying to find the time to watch all this stuff. one version is surely enough. how many tims would u really be able find time to watch that stuff .. all versions of a few different movies and the crap they heap on the movie's discs.
@BRm2008 I don't do that for every movie, obviously, but if it's one I'm a huge fan of/obsessed with then I do. Such as Terminator 2, Transformers: The Movie, etc. My love of those movies is such that I will gladly grab any edition that adds to my enjoyment of it. In the case of those particular movies, the special editions that have been released are outstanding and feature extensive material that isn't on the other editions. I watch many of the extras whenever I re-watch the movies.
i wont buy canadian dvd or bluray coz i dont like that annoying alliance logo in place of the proper studio that made the movie. i am that anal. i am particular about the cover the movie comes in.
totally agree with you pisses me off when the transfer to blu ray and make no effect with either the transfer or the extras. Blu ray is supposed to have more space and yet half the time they put nothing it. Then later along the line they release the film blu ray again with more extras so these days i look to see what the extras are like before i buy or upgrade the film from dvd to blu ray.
CONT Apparently, there is some guild loophole where they can save money in royalties if a making of doc is cut up into parts, as under 20 or 15 minute EPK segments rather than a full length doc. There are other examples, although I don't remember off the top of my head, where a DVD was released with the same extra as a previous release (DVD or laserdisc), except that the making of documentary was split into parts instead of played as a whole. I wanna say that the SCARFACE DVD was like that.
I had the same thing happen with the blu-ray of CARRIE. I gave away the special edition DVD when I picked up the blu-ray with the exact same cover, but it has almost none of the special features. It even has the same menu, but when you click on special features, you only get the trailer.
As far as THE THING doc, my understanding is that studios are saving money by cutting up these making of docs, shortening them, or having them as picture in picture extras. CONT
"I heard it was coming out on Blu-ray, so I sold my DVD" = dumb.
WAIT for it to come out, decide if you really want it, THEN if you want you can sell the DVD. Selling your DVD based on a rumor that it *might* come out with all the same features on Blu-ray is just dumb...
@Zaranyzerak you know your shit man it seems u have a lot of 3rd grade viewers who don't know Blu ray if it smacked them upside their little brains. Love your videos man atleast u know what to say in yours. And WTF is wrong with that guy and torture porn rape movies haha back off buddy I think for the first time he doesn't want a subscriber. But anyways keep at it oh and make a top 10 sci fi movie video if u havent or if im just clueless and can't search correctly hah.(probably the second one).
This is happened to me before, so i know now....juts because the covers the same doesn't mean your gonna get the same stuff dude! You need to check it out before you buy it! it should say on the information about the Bluray on the bottom or side of the page eg: On e-bay when you buy a BluRay or DVD it normally comes up with Extras or Disc two and will tell you what's also on the disc/discs You need to check before you buy!!
@Zaranyzerak Oh okay fair enough. It is really stupid though, they've upgraded to Bluray but put less extras on the disc though it cost more. In a way there ripping you off epart from the fact that the sound and picture is in better qaulity. Anyway thanks for replying to my comment, your probably the first person to actully do that, keep the great videos comming! I watch em all the time :3
with blu ray its suppose to have the space to hold 2 films per disc so they have no excuse for getting rid of extras they can fit them on i have just started collecting blu ray and i only have the dark knight kick ass and the 80s batman films and so far the extras have been decent so i hope with the blu rays i plan to get the extras are good and not just the trailer which i can watch on youtube
@doctorchris63 Not if it's a high end title. They can fit 2 movies per DVD too, but to do so means chopping the bitrate in half to make room. It would be the same thing for Blu-ray. Yes, there's more space on a Blu-ray, but the video files for high definition video are ALSO larger. So it actually works out to about the same amount of material, running time-wise. Just much higher quality. Fortunately now it looks like the extras issue is finally going away,
This guy looks just like my former boss, and he used to go on rants like that too. Same voice and everything, he would always insult the employees behind their backs, it was awesome!
@Sergy15a Way to completely miss the point. Some of us like to know about the MAKING of the movie. Not to mention a lot of the time extras ADD to the overall story or experience. But the main point of this video was that we were being gypped out of extra material that had been made previously available, and therefore should be available on the NEW editions. ESPECIALLY when they have the SAME EXACT COVER, implying that it's the SAME edition! Plus if they're going to charge MORE, why give us LESS?
I just bought my first Bluray movie. Its Cliffhanger. But i dont know. Im happy with my DVd collection. I dont have any experience with BL, so we shall see. Its expensive.
@boy1belfast It's just "Blu-ray" not "Blue Ray DVD" That's like saying "DVD CD." Just because they're the same size disc, doesn't mean they're the same thing. They're not. And actually NOW the situation has changed considerably, with the Blu-ray editions often getting more extras than the DVD. Some titles are even coming out exclusively on Blu-ray (such as the upcoming Grindhouse Theatrical Expreience set)
@Zaranyzerak Well, technically it is a Blu-Ray DVD. Not in trademark or title, but in technical specifications. DVD I believe stands for Digital Video Disc. And a Blu-Ray disc is a digital video disc, isn't it? So it is a Blu-Ray DVD technically.
@bheemabachus Nope, DVD stands for "Digital Versatile Disc." While that's fine and dandy as a description of its functionality, it doesn't make it the same thing. You don't call a DVD a DVD VCD just because they both show video. A Blu-ray is not a DVD any more than a DVD is a VCD or a CD. The resolutions are different, the storage capacities are different, even the laser itself used to read the disc is different. Blu-ray is Blu-ray. DVD is DVD. There is no Blu-ray DVD by any logical stretch.
Its ways for them to make more money my man. Just like on DVD they release the same movie 2-4 times and call it different editions so we as consumers keep buying it over and over.
blu ray is just another way to get you to spend more money on a supped up dvd, it seems blu ray sacrifices extras etc to better image,im staying with dvds
DVD9 can hold up to 9gb and BR can hold up to 25gb O.O it's kind of sad how they can't fit all of the extras on blueray, its pure lazyness. but at the end of the day if the picture is clear and readable im a happy camper. never really cared for blue ray
@gdfschimpi007 Actually...Blu-ray can hold up to 50gb. So there's REALLY no excuse to exclude stuff. Fortunately, this seems to be less and less of a problem now, with the opposite often being true - a lot of Blu-ray titles now get more extras than their DVD counterparts.
same thing with Con Air the bluray that was released was just the theatrical cut why did they release just the theatrical cut when the extended cut of the film has been out on dvd for years the answer is the companies with the rights to the films want to maximise the money they can make release a standard version so standard people or hardcore fans will buy it then later on release the special edition and increase the sales of that one film license. This is the one reason that makes sense to me
I really enjoyed "The Chronicles of Riddick" series. I don't see why people didn't like them. even "The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay" was an amazing game and just helped to further the series.
let m e tell you , i own 5 bluray dvd and vhs doubles -meaning i own all 3 versions
i see no difference in bluray of twister full metal jacket batman speed or toy story -especally the dvd bluray comparision do see lot better then vhs but stilll
@ninendowii2000 Try watching on a bigger TV (MINIMUM 42" - anything smaller no, you won't see much difference). There IS a difference, and quite a huge one. Far greater than the difference between VHS and DVD. Blu-ray quality stands up and reveals more detail up to a screen size of 110". Try that with DVD and you get a pixellated mess at that size, VHS becomes a washed out blur.
Awesome review man. I have recently dealt with this situation by getting double blu-ray cases so I could put the blue ray in it and the second disc that is the dvd with all the extyras that (were not) on the blu ray.
@Zacharia10F1vE It was a lot more epic than we were expecting, that's for sure! We actually really enjoyed the whole trilogy and hope the rumors of further sequels are true!
@lud4cr1sx That's not for me to say. It's entirely up to you if you want to replace your entire collection or not. Myself, I still buy DVD for TV shows and the like, but if a movies or show is on both I'll get the Blu-ray.
Fox is converting their alien quadrilogy into blu ray and it is supposed to be out in christmas this year, it will be called ALIEN ANTHOLOGY !!! it has been conformed that there will be sigourney weaver in commentaries on all 4, with 1080 hd quality duh, up to 7.1 surround sound, trivia track and BD live stuff, and from the people who saw the special features list they said that all they can say is wow. look it up. it should make you very very happy based on this video, that is if you don't know
i have the same Dawn of the dead version and was thinking about upgrading to the Blu-ray version,my Predator limited edition has a totaly different box to yours,i dont mind too much about the covers tbh.
I don't care what the covers are, my point was that if you're going o use the same cover that was previously ONLY on a a special edition DVD for the Blu-ray version, then it better have the same content as the DVD version. Otherwise I think it is VERY misleading, like it's masquerading as an edition that has more content...
yeah i totaly agree,so what is the quality of Dawn like on Blu-ray,would you recommend me to go buy it?just wondering obviously picture will be sharper but what of the sound, any feedback would be appreciated :)
Nope, all it has is the commentary track and some "U-Control" features. Everything else is missing. I've held the disc in my hand in the store and compared the features to the DVD I own, plus every review out there states clearly that those features are missing.
You'll need to do a rant on The Lord of the Rings upcoming Blu-Rays which are NOT the Extended versions, just the regular versions. Great marketing ploy for the LOTRs so most people will buy the same movie 4 times. 2 times on DVD and 2 times on blu-ray.
I too was duped by the 2004 Dawn of the Dead release. A friend gave me a DVD of Dawn of the Dead, which I gave away as I planned to buy the Blu-Ray release. So I bought the Blu-Ray release and was disappointed due to the missing extras. So I ended up rebuying the DVD release(lucky it was on sale for $5) for the extra features.
DVD 4.7GB
Blu-Ray 25GB
Yet they could not out the extra features on the Blu-Ray release.
The pop ups featured in the Blu-Ray of DOTD2004 sucks. Thanks, Charles
I'm still waiting for a proper edition with all the extras intact, and a proper transfer of the film. The current Blu-ray is unnecessarily DNR'ed. The old HD-DVD was left untouched.
I have been researching the Blu-Ray format for nearly 2 years. Each time a new movie comes out I look for reviews on it. I am going to start my BD collection with some older movies. The Thing,5th Element, and etc. I would like to know what I am spending 20-30 on. Want to make sure the quality is better than DVD edtions, cause some BD movies are not made from good masters.
It seems the medium has slowly risen. Like all before it - the true fans want quality (Laserdisc, Betamax and V2000 - ahem). And like certain releases (Ghostbusters being a prime example where the quality on Blu-Ray isn't that astounding), there is a refusal where the time to upgrade is a distant thing for most consumers, henceforth - the studios are holding back with splashing cash out with contracts for certain releases unless they know they will sell in large numbers (Hence ALIEN & STAR WARS)
Ghostbusters IS astounding picture quality. It's supposed to look that way. It was filmed on grainy film stock, so what you see in the Blu-ray accurately represents the source material. The ONLY flaw in the picture quality is the gamma levels are set a bit high. Otherwise, the colors have never looked better, detail is stunning and the natural grain of the original film source is presented accurately. The excessive use of DNR to REMOVE film grain is what needs to stop. No grain = no detail.
The whole reason for the loss of Special Features on a lot of Blu-Ray titles is due to the fact that those features were only commissioned for DVD release. Blu-Ray is a different format! There is a loss due to contractual limitations. There are certain exceptions (Like the forthcoming Alien Quadrilogy Blu-Ray and Steve Sansweet's confirmatons of the Complete Star Wars Saga Blu-Ray Box Set. They will be choc full! But it's still a fresh format. A lot of people refuse to upgrade... yet!
Ah, so they're pulling the old "change of media" card. You'd think they would have learned by now and include "all present and future home video media" in the contract, no format lasts forever!
If you knew anything about me or my collections, I was collecting LASERDISC when most people were collecting VHS, so no I didn't moan about extras on VHS because I had the BEST that was available at the time. It's not "moaning" anyway, it's about the studios being pointlessly deceptive, offering products with the same covers but not the same content. There is NO reason for that, there is plenty of space on Blu-ray for them to include everything that was on the DVD. My complaint is valid.
But that said, you're clearly you're not here to have any kind of intelligent discussion, you're just a troll. Good bye. Take your ignorance elsewhere.
it was the same with robocop on blu ray it had the same cover as the 20th anniversary collector's edition steel book dvd but had absolutely no special features, plus the transfer was horrid i thought at least if it did'nt have extras i would have a hi def version of the movie but that wasn't the case
Yeah, I noticed that when I CONSIDERED getting it on Blu. That's something that really needs to stop. If it's a different edition, with different (or no) extras, use a different cover to differentiate them. Period. I'm sure Robocop will get the royal treatment on Blu at some point (lord knows it deserves it!). Maybe Criterion will do a Blu version of their out of print DVD, that was a decent set.
It's up to the consumer what they want to spend their money on. Read into a product before you buy it! I hate the fact that that packaging can be deceiving - but would you honestly go and shell out $20-$30 on a Blu-Ray disc without checking the specs/bonus content etc just over some cover-art? YOU CAN'T SAY SHIT!
It's a matter of principal - the big-wigs don't care what any of the FAN-BOYS think unless their is financial attachment to any release.
Yes, consumers SHOULD inform themselves, but most don't. The fact is, however, that the vast majority of people AREN'T informed, and can't be bothered to read up before plunking down their cash. They'll take a quick glance at the shelf, see two identical covers, and naturally assume that they're both the same edition.
My issue with that is nothing to do with being a fanboy, it's about the studios mis-representing their product with deceptive packaging.
Sure, it's simply common sense to people like US to do a comparison before buying, whether it be by reading specs online or actually HOLDING both versions in our hand and comparing the specs. But Joe Blow Average Consumer doesn't tend to do that. He glances at the shelf, grabs something he likes, buys it, takes it home, and doesn't find out until after the fact that he's got an inferior edition. "Oh, where's them thar extras I heard about? This LOOKS like that thar 20th Anniversary edition..."
Well it's down to the consumer. If a studio chooses to release a title that resembles it's former counterpart, then it's down to the consumer to check. Whether it's a single disc, 2 Disc S.E, Digital Bonus 3 Disc, Full Screen, Widescreen - HD-DVD, DVD, Blu-Ray... The studios announce that there will be various releases. The public need to open their eyes and check. It's their fault if they can't differenciate.
Of course. But it's still effectively false advertising mis-representing the product by having it "masquerading" as another version, and that's my issue with it. *I* do plenty of reading up on a title before I buy it. But I'm not about to punish consumers for being uninformed because the studios are deceiving them. That's like blaming the victim... Consumers are always mis-informed. Releases like that take advantage of that, whether intentionally or not. It's a practice that needs to stop.
Here's the difference - when a version is full screen, widescreen, 2 or 3 discs, HD-DVD, DVD or Blu-ray, those are all things that are clearly labelled and are EXPECTED differences that even the most uninformed consumer will likely spot. But the COVER? The ART on the COVER? Specifically, art that was used and specifically commissioned for a DELUXE edition previously? This isn't about consumers being stupid. This is the STUDIOS blatantly misrepresenting their product. It needs to STOP.
I've put my point across - but as I can see you have the obligatory right to your view.
JOE PUBLIC should cross reference everything they buy, be it Detergent or DVD's. It's their own fault if they want to spend X-Amount on a disc and then whine about it after, and it's their own fault.
FORGET the cover art! It's not misleading, it's down to the dumb asses who think they are getting everything due to a glossy recommissioned sleeve. EVERYBODY - READ THE SMALL PRINT! FFS!
So in the case of the decieving cover issue, with like Predator, would you be happy if the included every extra from the previous release that it copied the cover from, but the extras were still in Standard Def, and only the movie was High Def? That's at least better right, I mean the movie in high def is the most important.
In a word, yes. That's usually the case anyway when they port over older extras - most of them are in SD to begin with, so it's not really possible to upgrade them. My main issue is just that everything be included. If you use the cover of a previous Special Edition, then it should have the SAME content as that Special Edition. Otherwise, use a different cover to differentiate them. In the case of Predator, there have been a LOT of covers for the various editions, so there was no excuse.
Since studios hold the rights to design and packaging, they do what they want. Look at the shoddy cover art for The Return of the Living Dead: C.E. AWFUL! Star Wars I-VI DVD Art - PHOTOSHOP AWFUL! Since most original quad poster art is unusable after time (scratches/dirt embedding, etc...) they opt for a cheaper process opposed to their initial release counterparts, where the artists have to be paid in huge sums for another release on a brand new medium, unless studio owned.
That's very interesting, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the issue I'm talking about in the video. The issue is that they shouldn't use the same covers that were used for a previous special edition DVD for a barebones Blu-ray. That's blatantly deceptive and needlessly confusing to the consumer. I refuse to believe that the major studios can't afford to commission a new cover for a new edition. Given how many covers Predator has had, for example, there was no excuse.
They do this for the general consumer. The average consumer doesn't care about packaging. Just the actual film itself. There are many fans who want this previous packaging scrapped - but as I have said before on another post, it just isn't possible unless companies know they are going to make a profit to go that extra mile (Unless it's Lucas/Spielberg/Jackson). It's not deceptive, before you go and buy a disc read the details on the sleeve or check out reviews. The company isn't decieving anyone
this guy knows nothing about movies, home theater, or anything at all. the only way he could make a video is if he shoved a blu-ray up his ass. this guy is THE DUMBEST collector I've ever seen.
Wow, you present such a compelling argument. How could anyone not believe anything you have to say! You sir, are a moron. Anyone who actually WATCHES my videos knows that I know more about movies, collecting and FILM than most people on YouTube who CLAIM they do. Now kindly go fuck yourself, k? Thanks!
Is the alternate version of alien 3 any better, because I hear it's way different, I've only seen the theatrical alien 3, and thought it was okay, but not nearly as good as the first 2. The first alien was the best.
Definitely better. I didn't realize just how many sub-plots and "fates of various characters" were axed in the theatrical cut. Much better overall, I actually kinda like that cut. Though I don't like it as a continuation of the Alien story, but as a standalone sci-fi horror movie it's not bad.
My computer monitor is a 21.5" 1080p screen, both our parents have 42" HDTV screens - Annetta's parents' is a plasma, my parents' is LCD. Between the three of them, I'm able to enjoy HD content just fine and do proper comparisons for reviews. Just because I don't OWN one doesn't mean I don't have access to them.
Yep, we have our PS3 hooked up to our standard def TV most of the time and watch everything on it. DVD, Blu-ray, downloaded stuff, the works. Blu-ray looks fine on standard def, basically just completely PERFECT quality standard def. Obviously you'll get more out of it from an HD set, but at least you can start building a collection and enjoy the content until you can afford one (which is basically what we're doing). Back in 2002, I started buying DVDs before I even had a player yet. :)
Kill bill is an amazing movie. But why are u forcing me to get the blu ray!? :)

I am on both sides of the fence here.
For certian movies like The Terminator and Terminator 2 and the Thing and such I like the special features.
But with most movies I really never watch any of the special features. I got better things to do with my time and allot of games to go through.
Most of the time I am happy with just the movie on blu ray or DVD.

i wont buy canadian dvd or bluray coz i dont like that annoying alliance logo in place of the proper studio that made the movie. i am that anal. i am particular about the cover the movie comes in.
BRm2008 1 year ago
totally agree with you pisses me off when the transfer to blu ray and make no effect with either the transfer or the extras.

Xysmatascruff 1 year ago
I had the same thing happen with the blu-ray of CARRIE. I gave away the special edition DVD when I picked up the blu-ray with the exact same cover, but it has almost none of the special features. It even has the same menu, but when you click on special features, you only get the trailer.
As far as THE THING doc, my understanding is that studios are saving money by cutting up these making of docs, shortening them, or having them as picture in picture extras. CONT
Xysmatascruff 1 year ago
"I heard it was coming out on Blu-ray, so I sold my DVD" = dumb.
WAIT for it to come out, decide if you really want it, THEN if you want you can sell the DVD. Selling your DVD based on a rumor that it *might* come out with all the same features on Blu-ray is just dumb...

This is happened to me before, so i know now....juts because the covers the same doesn't mean your gonna get the same stuff dude! You need to check it out before you buy it! it should say on the information about the Bluray on the bottom or side of the page eg: On e-bay when you buy a BluRay or DVD it normally comes up with Extras or Disc two and will tell you what's also on the disc/discs You need to check before you buy!!

with blu ray its suppose to have the space to hold 2 films per disc so they have no excuse for getting rid of extras they can fit them on i have just started collecting blu ray and i only have the dark knight kick ass and the 80s batman films and so far the extras have been decent so i hope with the blu rays i plan to get the extras are good and not just the trailer which i can watch on youtube
doctorchris63 1 year ago
@doctorchris63 Not if it's a high end title. They can fit 2 movies per DVD too, but to do so means chopping the bitrate in half to make room. It would be the same thing for Blu-ray. Yes, there's more space on a Blu-ray, but the video files for high definition video are ALSO larger. So it actually works out to about the same amount of material, running time-wise. Just much higher quality. Fortunately now it looks like the extras issue is finally going away,

Sergy15a 1 year ago
@Sergy15a Way to completely miss the point. Some of us like to know about the MAKING of the movie. Not to mention a lot of the time extras ADD to the overall story or experience. But the main point of this video was that we were being gypped out of extra material that had been made previously available, and therefore should be available on the NEW editions. ESPECIALLY when they have the SAME EXACT COVER, implying that it's the SAME edition! Plus if they're going to charge MORE, why give us LESS?

boy1belfast 1 year ago
@boy1belfast It's just "Blu-ray" not "Blue Ray DVD" That's like saying "DVD CD." Just because they're the same size disc, doesn't mean they're the same thing. They're not. And actually NOW the situation has changed considerably, with the Blu-ray editions often getting more extras than the DVD. Some titles are even coming out exclusively on Blu-ray (such as the upcoming Grindhouse Theatrical Expreience set)
Zaranyzerak 1 year ago
@Zaranyzerak Well, technically it is a Blu-Ray DVD. Not in trademark or title, but in technical specifications. DVD I believe stands for Digital Video Disc. And a Blu-Ray disc is a digital video disc, isn't it? So it is a Blu-Ray DVD technically.
bheemabachus 1 year ago
@bheemabachus Nope, DVD stands for "Digital Versatile Disc." While that's fine and dandy as a description of its functionality, it doesn't make it the same thing. You don't call a DVD a DVD VCD just because they both show video. A Blu-ray is not a DVD any more than a DVD is a VCD or a CD. The resolutions are different, the storage capacities are different, even the laser itself used to read the disc is different. Blu-ray is Blu-ray. DVD is DVD. There is no Blu-ray DVD by any logical stretch.

@Zaranyzerak Okay fair enough. But you do see where I am coming from, correct? But yeah, I see your point.

gdfschimpi007 1 year ago

I don't care what the covers are, my point was that if you're going o use the same cover that was previously ONLY on a a special edition DVD for the Blu-ray version, then it better have the same content as the DVD version. I too was duped by the 2004 Dawn of the Dead release. A friend gave me a DVD of Dawn of the Dead, which I gave away as I planned to buy the Blu-Ray release. DVD 4.7GB
Blu-Ray 25GB

It seems the medium has slowly risen. Like all before it - the true fans want quality (Laserdisc, Betamax and V2000 - ahem). And like certain releases (Ghostbusters being a prime example where the quality on Blu-Ray isn't that astounding), there is a refusal where the time to upgrade is a distant thing for most consumers, henceforth - the studios are holding back with splashing cash out with contracts for certain releases unless they know they will sell in large numbers (Hence ALIEN & STAR WARS)
fuzzbox77 2 years ago

A lot of people refuse to upgrade... yet!
fuzzbox77 2 years ago
Ah, so they're pulling the old "change of media" card. You'd think they would have learned by now and include "all present and future home video media" in the contract, no format lasts forever!
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
If you knew anything about me or my collections, I was collecting LASERDISC when most people were collecting VHS, so no I didn't moan about extras on VHS because I had the BEST that was available at the time. It's not "moaning" anyway, it's about the studios being pointlessly deceptive, offering products with the same covers but not the same content. There is NO reason for that, there is plenty of space on Blu-ray for them to include everything that was on the DVD. My complaint is valid.

THIS IS GOING TO CLEAR UP THE WHOLE POINT!...
It's a matter of principal - the big-wigs don't care what any of the FAN-BOYS think unless their is financial attachment to any release.
fuzzbox77 2 years ago
Yes, consumers SHOULD inform themselves, but most don't. The fact is, however, that the vast majority of people AREN'T informed, and can't be bothered to read up before plunking down their cash. They'll take a quick glance at the shelf, see two identical covers, and naturally assume that they're both the same edition.
My issue with that is nothing to do with being a fanboy, it's about the studios mis-representing their product with deceptive packaging.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Sure, it's simply common sense to people like US to do a comparison before buying, whether it be by reading specs online or actually HOLDING both versions in our hand and comparing the specs. But Joe Blow Average Consumer doesn't tend to do that. He glances at the shelf, grabs something he likes, buys it, takes it home, and doesn't find out until after the fact that he's got an inferior edition. "Oh, where's them thar extras I heard about? This LOOKS like that thar 20th Anniversary edition..."
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Well it's down to the consumer. If a studio chooses to release a title that resembles it's former counterpart, then it's down to the consumer to check. Whether it's a single disc, 2 Disc S.E, Digital Bonus 3 Disc, Full Screen, Widescreen - HD-DVD, DVD, Blu-Ray... The studios announce that there will be various releases. The public need to open their eyes and check. It's their fault if they can't differenciate.
fuzzbox77 2 years ago
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Here's the difference - when a version is full screen, widescreen, 2 or 3 discs, HD-DVD, DVD or Blu-ray, those are all things that are clearly labelled and are EXPECTED differences that even the most uninformed consumer will likely spot. But the COVER? The ART on the COVER? Specifically, art that was used and specifically commissioned for a DELUXE edition previously? This isn't about consumers being stupid. This is the STUDIOS blatantly misrepresenting their product. It needs to STOP.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I've put my point across - but as I can see you have the obligatory right to your view.
JOE PUBLIC should cross reference everything they buy, be it Detergent or DVD's. It's their own fault if they want to spend X-Amount on a disc and then whine about it after, and it's their own fault.
FORGET the cover art! It's not misleading, it's down to the dumb asses who think they are getting everything due to a glossy recommissioned sleeve. EVERYBODY - READ THE SMALL PRINT! FFS!
fuzzbox77 2 years ago
CLUE! It's in the top right corner XD
7677876 2 years ago
So in the case of the decieving cover issue, with like Predator, would you be happy if the included every extra from the previous release that it copied the cover from, but the extras were still in Standard Def, and only the movie was High Def? That's at least better right, I mean the movie in high def is the most important.
AVGN92 2 years ago
In a word, yes. That's usually the case anyway when they port over older extras - most of them are in SD to begin with, so it's not really possible to upgrade them. My main issue is just that everything be included. If you use the cover of a previous Special Edition, then it should have the SAME content as that Special Edition. Otherwise, use a different cover to differentiate them. In the case of Predator, there have been a LOT of covers for the various editions, so there was no excuse.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
Since studios hold the rights to design and packaging, they do what they want. Look at the shoddy cover art for The Return of the Living Dead: C.E. AWFUL! Star Wars I-VI DVD Art - PHOTOSHOP AWFUL! Since most original quad poster art is unusable after time (scratches/dirt embedding, etc...) they opt for a cheaper process opposed to their initial release counterparts, where the artists have to be paid in huge sums for another release on a brand new medium, unless studio owned.
fuzzbox77 2 years ago
That's very interesting, but it doesn't really have anything to do with the issue I'm talking about in the video. The issue is that they shouldn't use the same covers that were used for a previous special edition DVD for a barebones Blu-ray. That's blatantly deceptive and needlessly confusing to the consumer. I refuse to believe that the major studios can't afford to commission a new cover for a new edition. Given how many covers Predator has had, for example, there was no excuse.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
They do this for the general consumer.

Is the alternate version of alien 3 any better, because I hear it's way different, I've only seen the theatrical alien 3, and thought it was okay, but not nearly as good as the first 2. The first alien was the best.

yeah it explains alot more stuff like that

Definitely better. I didn't realize just how many sub-plots and "fates of various characters" were axed in the theatrical cut. Much better overall, I actually kinda like that cut. Though I don't like it as a continuation of the Alien story, but as a standalone sci-fi horror movie it's not bad.

do you even have a hd widscreen tv?

My computer monitor is a 21.5" 1080p screen, both our parents have 42" HDTV screens - Annetta's parents' is a plasma, my parents' is LCD. Between the three of them, I'm able to enjoy HD content just fine and do proper comparisons for reviews. Just because I don't OWN one doesn't mean I don't have access to them.

oh. I have an standered def tv, do you think I can watch blu-ray in atleast OK quality on it (im getting a PS3 next month)?

Yep, we have our PS3 hooked up to our standard def TV most of the time and watch everything on it. DVD, Blu-ray, downloaded stuff, the works. Blu-ray looks fine on standard def, basically just completely PERFECT quality standard def. Obviously you'll get more out of it from an HD set, but at least you can start building a collection and enjoy the content until you can afford one (which is basically what we're doing). Back in 2002, I started buying DVDs before I even had a player yet. :)
