Wow...reading some of the comments left on here and its crazy....I think mary did a very good job..is it better than jj's version...not at all, is better than melissa etheridge's version or pinks...no its not, but its coming from someone who normally doesn't sing classic rock, so to be completely out of her genre, she kicked ass...get over yourself people...research Ms. Joplin cause she herself sited Bessie, Etta, Aretha and many more black women as influences....Peace
@wizsupreme777 You know that's right! Janis always paid tribute to Tina Turner, Etta, Aretha, Bessie, Sarah no last names needed and the original VOCALIST of this song, Erma Franklin! Janis was real and down to earth and she did not try to re-write history! Mary did a damn good job with this song. She put her touch on it and she completely made it her own song! That is a true singer! Some of the comments are unfair and they should not compare any of the vocalists. They are all great!
is sad to see how many artis covering this song seem not to understand the intention of the song, they turn it into a merely romantic moaning instead of the kick ass song Janis once sang . . .
Personally, I like Janis better, same as I like Janis and Melissa Etheridge's takes on the song better than Faith Hill's. Mary J. Blige's version is good, but Janis is so hard core rock, hers will forever be the greatest.

@Choclongleggz you know thats right! So many stars have done this song and no one remembers that Erma Franklin originated it first! Mary blows this song up! I like the way Vanessa Amoroso does this song also! She is from Austrailia and she is the bomb too! Why do people compare singers? They all sing it differently and they bring their own unique take to it. Some sing it with a rock feel, some sing it jazzy, and soulful like Mary and Melissa Etheridge tears it up royally!
people really praise all the remakes of this song? this was butchered bad, janis joplin sings this song with heart and aggression which this remake lacks
Mary does a really good job. The guitar solo however absolutely ruins it. It was completely tastless. It's not supposed to be shredded. It's supposed to be raw and bluesy.
Everyone's version of Janis Joplin's "Piece Of My Heart" is good. I'd like to see Madonna do this cover. She'd be really good at singing this song. R.I.P. JJ!!!
This isn't her genre, and she nailed it. Much respect!!!! We're all used to Janis totally rockin' this, but try to remember, this is art, which can be interpreted differently. I prefer a rock version (Melissa!!!), but this was excellent, esp. from 4:30 onward. Bravo!!!!!
Yeah MJB! Piece of My Heart was originally recorded by Erma Franklin, sister of the Queen of Soul. As much as Janis nailed it, Mary did a brilliant job bringing the song back to its R&B roots!
are you guys fucking kidding me? GROW UP and learn to appreciate music! knowing janis she would be SO proud that someone like her would sing this. of coarse this isnt her scene. but if you didnt know janis had soul in her voice and so does mary j blige! so stop hating! she did a very good job. grow up haters!
She has no business performing this song way out of her range. Not saying Mary doesn't have soul she has it exponentially but technically she can't hit it she's looking like a lounge singer...the guitarist tries to save it to little too little too late.

Hello MZ.MARY J Blige I'm one of your Biggest Fan I just want you to Know that I DON'T care what NO ONE else say I'm Feeling this song I'm making this my ringtone keep up the good work *MJBBF*/mary j blige biggest fan
@xxshrapnailxx Not in the lifetime faggot & Pink looks up to Mary dummy. Pink could NEVER EVER deliver a song like this with that ashy shitty shrill voice.
@AnitaArethaChakaMary Looking up to them as a person means nothing when it comes to the actual talent. And do you even know the definition of the word shrill?? P!nk has a raspiness to her voice, much like Janis Joplin, which is far from shrill. Love the faggot part? Sounds like someone is insecure about their own tendencies. I am married to a wonderful man and guess what?? I'm a woman and though I am a "non-practicing" bisexual, I still consider myself as such and proud of it!
@AnitaArethaChakaMary and it doesn't matter what you or anyone else says about P!nk, her beautiful voice proves who's better. Again, no matter what you or anyone else says, you just can't change that fact
@xxshrapnailxx Your LIES will NEVER be facts dummy, it's a KNOWN FACT that Mary is better than Pink & even Pink will tell you that retarded dike, Pink is a Mary STAN!
@AnitaArethaChakaMary Hmmmm, shows how much you know. They wouldn't be lies if they are my opinions. Perhaps going back to school would help you in a debate. You have a problem with gays? Well I don't and I feel sorry for you if you do. I happen to be engaged to a wonderful man (and I am a woman). And as far as Pink being a "dike"....lol not unless her husband Carey Hart chopped off his penis and took some hormones. And she just had a child this year... Carey's child.
@AnitaArethaChakaMary Do you realize how ignorant you make yourself out to be with the words you spew. Wait, I'm sure you do know...and that's the pathetic part.
Ah wonder what Miss Beeyonsay would sound like if she sang with as much feeling as Madame Mary does here...it'd be interesting to hear!!Mary takes it HOME at the end...fab!!
Mary killed this song! I love Erma Franklin's version of course because she is the originator, and Janis a true soul sister, and Melissa Eheridge, and Vanessa A. from Austrailia who also kills this song! Pink also does justice to it, I love all of the versions but Mary is just increible and so real. She really sang like she was angry and a bad ass female, and that is the way it should be sung!
i really appreciate how much effort mary j blige put into this... most other artists wouldve ruined it, but u can tell mary really has respect for the original artist :)
I watched this Fashion Rocks Ceremony and remembered that Mary made this song so her own and to me that showed me how versatile she really is......Mary can sing so stop denying her, she sounds better live than most of the todays so called Female Hip-Hop/R&B singers......And if promoting someone else you don't disrespect an already established R&B singer because of the woman before her Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner and so on, who paved the way
@HiediBear1 ~ Im not here to downplay Mary's abilities as a singer in any way shape or form. She is amazing in her genre & thats why her name carries with it the respect & admiration of MODERN R&B/SOUL singers. But when I first saw this on tv years ago I nearly set fire to it!! On the other hand, I saw Pink's 'Bobby Mcgee' & couldn't help but jump out of my seat & state: That's how you fucking LIVE a Joplin tune!!! & Pink in no way is a better singer than Ms.Blige. But what a fucking difference.
OMG!! ok, so i guess i'm like 3 yrs late on this 1 but i never saw this b4!! mary is my faaaaaaaavourite girl & she smashed this song! i love how she kept it raw (a la janis joplin) but she still put the NYC up in there, i was actually screamin & clappin like i was in the front row hahahaha. love u mary!!
@MakeSense10 Didn't steal it, she covered it and made it live a little longer. Now other great singers also have an opportunity to put their spin on it and make it live even longer.
As a Janis fan, I feel almost like I'm in church denying a God, but this IS Mary J. Blige's song. NO ONE, including J.J. has ever done it better! Awesome !!!
This is awful. Janis sang it for real. This almost too polite and the voice is wrong. It's like lets be 'wild' like Janis, so they flash the lights at the end!! yuk!!
Mary J. "rippt" this song! I LOVE IT! She went in at the in on "Take it"! She is so far the best on this,... along with Janis Joplin and Faith Hill! But Mary won me over,... Totally! Forget what the rest of y'all sid and say! She delivered this like a true Rockstar, baby, ya heard m'? HATS OFF! She had to have studied Janis version coz it's so similar! PLATINUM SINGLE if she ran it!
Well, obviously I prefer Janis or Erma's version, but I must admit here that Mary was great, managed to make her a historical and very difficult piece, very daring because people expect much to meet expectations already High ...nice =)
Mary J sings the HELL out of this song! Another amazing cover of this is Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone at the Grammy's a few years back. All of them are just magnicient! Love ya Mary!! Sing that song! Erma F..and Janis J. would be proud!
at 5:05-5:23 she makes me feel like im at church i want to pass around a collection plate and say the doors of the church are now open!! she killed that song I like erma franklins original so much and i thought janis did so good with it but mary really put her own spin on it love it!!!!
at 5:05-5:25 she makes me feel like im church and I want to pass the offering plate around and say the doors of the church are now open!! I love mary j she killed that song
at 5:05-5:25 she makes me feel like im at church and I want to pass the offering plate around and say the doors of the church are now open!! I love mary j she killed that song
MARY J DID A AMAZING JOB. how can u watch that and not think its one of the most amazing performances ever! in my opinion it is and aparently so the the audience cuz they were ooohing and awwing and it wasn't even her concert it was fashion rocks so u can't say it was her fanbase. I love janis but this is emma's song and Mary did her proud.
@keydet72 Actually I can hear Janis say "sing it baby"!!! Janis would have been VERY pleased. It was tribute to Janis. Erma Franklin/Aretha's sister made the song First! Mary is a fan of all three of those aforementioned. Mary loves Janis and Aretha. Janis would have given Mary a HUGE HUG IMHO!
@HaliB75 How do you know so much about how Mary feels...you actually know her??Come to think of it...you sayin you know how Janis feels as well!!Ahm not sure ahm comfortable with someone saying something as important as how someone else feels...hmmmmmm...not sure at all!!
@TheMrMarilyn Mary put her foot in damn song that was originally a Soul, R&B classic. Janis loved Blues, Soul, Rock and R&B. She did the damn thing! Nuff said...Nothing left to say. You are reading too much into the statement and looking for static when there is none.
@HaliB75 Ah know what you mean...ah didn't mean to come across as 'nasty' or whatever (because ah aint!!)...it was just a thought ah had after reading your comment...exactly as you said "no static"...no static at ALL!!Love...x!!
@AthenianPride Excuse me, but this song was originally recorded by Aretha Franklin's sister, Erma. You're the one that needs to be slapped silly. Know your facts.
@AthenianPride You need to understand that when someone dose another person song its not to sound like that singer, its called a cover and the point is to make it your own, not to sound like them.
Mary J sang the hell out of this song... she is amazing..so much soul and passion. I love listening to her. Of course Mary wouldn't sound like Melissa, Janis, Pink etc etc.. she's not rock for one thing.. she's r&b..soul.. and I think every singer who has covered this song brings their own flare to it.. Why bother having a cover of a song if you're going to sing it exactly like someone else?
ive heard many versions tonight and this is the first to catch the true feeling and vibe of this song the way janis meant it way to rock mary your a kick ass diva
Ok, Janis was not the original singer for this. It was Aretha Franklin's sister Erma. Janis did a cover of it which you see on the Big Brother and the Holding Company album. Janis did this often because she liked the blues and soul sound. (EX: Ball and Chain, Summertime) It would startle people sometimes to see Janis and hear her sing because they only expected her sound from a black person. Janis took the song and made it hers with her unique voice and abilities. Mary J did the same thing.
What? "She is trying to make it sound like Soul Music..." Erma Franklin, who originally recorded this song was a soul singer. This is a soul song. While the Joplin version is GREAT, Blige is, if anything, bringing back the original version of this song. Either way, this is a great song when sung by great people.
Failed! _ucked it all up! Sound like She is trying to make it sound like Soul Music or Church Music?? Wierd. She need to sing He own material, if she has any?
@fpinon5150 you sound soooooooooooooooooooooooo ignorant and stupid.. if you do some research with your little amount of knowledge.. you would feel extra stupid at the end because this is Erma Franklin song a soul/gospel song.. Janis did a cover.. n Mary rippppppppppped this vocally the best.. go some where else with your stupidity
It sounds like Mary couldn't decide whether to sound like Janice or make it her own. Pity, this could have been a truly great cover. Instead, it's mediocre.
fucking ogly whores can not even get near to Janis you fucking cunts!!!!! i wish you were all dead and with so many worms eating your rotten fake tits.
Go Mary!

Janis' & Mary J Blige's version are both AWESOME :)

I love to hear a great song, done by great artists in various styles. Shes not Janis, but Mary and she did a great job.

SBRMusiek 1 year ago
Mary J tends to make any song her own, even a cover (one from US comes to mind). I think it really shows the talent she has.
johnnya2 1 year ago
Well, obviously I prefer Janis or Erma's version, but I must admit here that Mary was great, managed to make her a historical and very difficult piece, very daring because people expect much to meet expectations already High ...nice =)

@keydet72 You have got to be kidding me! That was awsome!
Msdv8ed 1 year ago 4
@keydet72 Actually I can hear Janis say "sing it baby"!!! Janis would have been VERY pleased. It was tribute to Janis. Erma Franklin/Aretha's sister made the song First! Mary is a fan of all three of those aforementioned. Mary loves Janis and Aretha. Janis would have given Mary a HUGE HUG IMHO!

@TheMrMarilyn Mary put her foot in damn song that was originally a Soul, R&B classic. Janis loved Blues, Soul, Rock and R&B. She did the damn thing! Nuff said...Nothing left to say. You are reading too much into the statement and looking for static when there is none.
HaliB75 10 months ago
@HaliB75 Ah know what you mean...ah didn't mean to come across as 'nasty' or whatever (because ah aint!!)...it was just a thought ah had after reading your comment...exactly as you said "no static"...no static at ALL!!Love...x!!

@AthenianPride You need to understand that when someone dose another person song its not to sound like that singer, its called a cover and the point is to make it your own, not to sound like them.

@AthenianPride oh and I forgot to add that Janice rendition of this song wasn't the original, it's Erma Franklin!

SweetestMiss 1 year ago
Flair that is.. apparently listening to this has me so mesmerized I can't even spell!

ive heard many versions tonight and this is the first to catch the true feeling and vibe of this song the way janis meant it way to rock mary your a kick ass diva

@chiptificate Ms. Etheridge has a kick ass cover of Janis version
rodssslive 1 year ago
Ok, Janis was not the original singer for this. It was Aretha Franklin's sister Erma. Janis did a cover of it which you see on the Big Brother and the Holding Company album. Janis did this often because she liked the blues and soul sound. (EX: Ball and Chain, Summertime) It would startle people sometimes to see Janis and hear her sing because they only expected her sound from a black person. Janis took the song and made it hers with her unique voice and abilities. Mary J did the same thing.
JadeKinneasKaiba 1 year ago
Great Job! Mary did Janis proud. One of the nicest covers of this song I've heard yet!
TiffThomas82 1 year ago 2
What? "She is trying to make it sound like Soul Music..." Erma Franklin, who originally recorded this song was a soul singer. This is a soul song. While the Joplin version is GREAT, Blige is, if anything, bringing back the original version of this song. Either way, this is a great song when sung by great people.
Emolls001 1 year ago
Failed! _ucked it all up! Sound like She is trying to make it sound like Soul Music or Church Music?? Wierd. She need to sing He own material, if she has any?
fpinon5150 1 year ago
@fpinon5150 you sound soooooooooooooooooooooooo ignorant and stupid.. if you do some research with your little amount of knowledge.. you would feel extra stupid at the end because this is Erma Franklin song a soul/gospel song.. Janis did a cover.. n Mary rippppppppppped this vocally the best.. go some where else with your stupidity
MakeSense10 1 year ago 3
It sounds like Mary couldn't decide whether to sound like Janice or make it her own. Pity, this could have been a truly great cover. Instead, it's mediocre.
bishop186 1 year ago
Great to see that someone made a serious effort to cover Janis. I think the original had folks scared to try. Mary J makes a great effort here.
