I love the idea of using I-pod! But would not reccomend it cause it could be dameged by you possibly dropping it. And if that song freezes while being played live, thats not cool. lol :P
Today there are several very high end free open source radio station automation programs that are being used on professional HD sideband stations instead of SAM. One is Rivendell on Linux and in Beta now is RadioDJ. You can find videos about both on YouTube.
the radio station at my college (250watts LPFM) doesn't even use sam, they use a dedicated system, dates to about 2008, so it is current, plus most radio stations now have a seprate stand-by computer always on, aswell as the dj system, one is always on RSS feeds (news, announcements, weather alerts, etc)
@MrPorterito all you need is some interface to line up the list and insert the liners/station IDs... Doesn't have to be anything fancy... The actual studio looked very up to date compared to most colleges/non-profits!
for the at home novice, check out the Sam Broadcaster program, it allows you to broadcast through the internet at a very low price. $275.00. Excellent program been using it to broadcast my own radio show.
just another example of while there are certain standards in a radio studio..and it seems VFR is using them for gear, the individual configurations are very unique. does this station actually have a control room? what's actually on air? most stations have a control room where everything is broadcast from, and production, where prerecorded material for air is produced. this seems to have only one.
Given that this is a community station , I wouldn't call it a poor example of a radio station. It's calling do what you can with what you have and what works for them.
This is often what makes every station studio/ control room unique. This stations auromation is actually in another room from control.
No, it's not some modern state of the art facility, but the basics are there, and are common in anything on air today.
Macci bigboard he doesn't now everything about the studio

This is an extremely poor example of a radio station, have you ever heard of a "secondary Mackie board"? A lack of automation as well.
