@mypulsereverberates playing in odd time signatures does not indicate your a good musician. Playing in odd time doesnt mean you have talent either. And most of all, playing in odd times, in NO WAY denotes ANYTHING AT ALL to do with jazz. to suggest a jazz influence because they play odd time is ignorant. Like some somehow being linked to jazz legitimizes this crap. What else do this crappy ass band do? besides play fast, in odd times, and jump around on stage like some freakin idiots?

Also, if you don't know this, DEP is known for their wide level of experimenting, not only with times, but for the instrumentation and stylistic approaches on many of their songs. BTW, this band has full right to say they are influenced by jazz, BECAUSE of the odd times. Odd times are a fundamental of jazz right? This band uses them. That is enough to suggest a jazz influence. Why don't you listen to Widower and tell me that's not a Jazz influence.

@VJelectro im not getting into a back and forth, but odd time signatures has nothing to do with jazz. just because some jazz uses odd time signatures on occasion, doesnt mean that anything that is in odd time is jazz influenced. period, cant get any cut and dry than that.....so they experiment, so they have instrumentation, and stylistic approaches, it doesnt stop their music from sucking. Their biggest demographic is high school kids spending their parents money.

What you're saying has an ounce of truth in it, I'm not trying to deny it.What I'm saying is that the band says they are influenced from jazz, I can see that because of the time shifts and what not. Your music doesn't have to sound exactly like jazz to be influenced by it. Remember this is all subjective, so there's no right or wrong. At least you're not a troll. lol

@mypulsereverberates You've got to agree that mathcore is a pretty big subgenre if not a genre. Bands that are labeled as mathcore sound pretty different than bands that do not. It is called mathcore probably because time signatures are the only (as far as i know) numerical (therefore mathematical) value of music and that is the factor that distinguishes these bands from others. So how exactly is the word/name mathcore misleading? I read somewhere once that there is a mathematical formula

@mypulsereverberates yeah i agree metalcore is full of uncreative bands but that doesnt not make it a genre. mathcore isnt just "they play in 7/4" i have a few 12 songs where it swaps time signitures from 4/4 to 5/4 to 3/4 to 7/8 to 9/8 15/12 27/32 etcetc

calculating infinity is a classic album.. all that original metalcore, old poison the well, skycamefalling, old thursday, 7a7p is all great. but it all went to total shit, dillinger is trying to write electro pop songs now, and theres bands that out play them nowadays too

I love DEP and the way they bitch slap every audience they have ever played for in that every time I have see them play a show where the majority of people there have never heard of them by the end of the first DEP song they know the name of the band. Either to cover their ears in disgust or to stare like a deer in the headlights this band is at the top of their genre and rightfully so. I understand most people will never get this music and I could not be happier.
