  • This guy is good. Not only are his responses calm, direct and intelligent, but he puts together organized sentences and paragraphs quickly and coherently, which suggests he's not just fast-talking, but that he knows what he's talking about to an incredible depth.

That there are people around who care that much about what they do gives me faith, not just in blacks but in people.

  • We need more of this Dr. Lewis in this world!

  • oreilly smashed him lmao

  • Wow I am soooo proud of him right now! I just want to give him a big hug for not letting himself get bullied by that idiot son of a bitch!

  • :44 seconds on In the black churches it is a social And political experience.Sounds like a violation of Church and State? Anyone Agree?

  • america has not limited oppurtunities for black people.. basically anyone without a criminal record can get student loans to go to college. so your chosing to go to the army because you cant afford college, but got caught with weed in highschool, all you have to do is basically write a letter saying your sorry (i know ive done it) and you can go and get 80 g's for schooling ontop of education you receive while serving. any black person can do that, america is not limiting their oppurtunities

  • damn....he's really good.

he never diverted from rational reasoning, not once did he show any sort of reaction to O'Reilly's clumsy prodding.

  • if oreiley was an idiot or racist... oh well look at his bank account compared to yours.... jus sayin.... if anyone here is racist its that pastor and whoever says "because im black" o reilly NEVER got owned on here

  • obama is wrong he's a freemason and on the same bandwagon towards the n.w.o. and black people like this are so blind and dumb that they can't realize that he's so coruppt, aids to the black community yeah "aight" who cares it affects more maybe african americans have alot of drug use between one another maybe thats why its at a higher level. man black people need to get off their self righteuos horses and go get an education instead of following onw pissed off black man.man no evolution

  • i really really really commend this professor for not letting oreilly walk all over him

  • I do not understand how someone as intelligent as this professor can stand to be in the same room as such an ignorant racist prick.

  • Most people think Sociology and/or Sociologists are foolish, "hippy", uneducated idiots. I personally think they are the underdogs when it comes to academia and research.

    I fucking loved Sociology.

  • Its funny when someone black makes a controversial statement, it all of sudden represents all black people, has anyone asked if Pat Robertson represents all of white people views.

  • Fox news hires black people to come on their show and act white and denounce other black people. It's brilliant!

  • smart motherfucker

  • Wow this guy killed oreilly...He made oreilly look childish

  • He is my professor RIGHT NOW....

  • go Dumi!

  • This Lewis guy did a great job. He worded everything flawlessly so Bill couldn't cut his throat for it.

    You have to tip-toe around.

"You're an educated man, do you believe aids was created by the government?"

In the situation that it WAS created by the government, education would then follow to teach people that it came from somewhere else. Education is just as dangerous as ignorance in that respect.

It doesn't come down to education, it comes down to specific information

  • dats a great point i agree, education can be dangerous because it comes from man, and man has its own corruptions and beliefs which could teach u a lie or not teach u a specific topic at all, i agree with u 100%

  • This guy is not a typical black church attendee. He is a spokesman who have been trained and coached to appear intelligent.

I can't believe I'm even taking the time to comment on religion other then to say that it's complete shit. I lie that should be exposed. Truth is in science and research, not imaginary friends.

  • Hahahaha!!! Trained and coached to "appear intelligent"? A "spokesperson"? Wow. This gentleman has a Ph.D and is a well regarded instructor at the prestigious City College of New York, yet you assert that he "appears" to be intelligent.

  • just racist...just can't help yourself, huh?

  • trained to appear intelligent? so i guess he got that PhD off a match book right?

  • Smart man, that Dr. Lewis

  • Blacks are far more racist these days then white people,,,whites don't train there kids to hate other races, the way some black churches are teaching the youth to keep hating, for mostly false reasons....(Obama did hear Rev. Wrights racist rants,,so he lied to America when he said he was not there.)!

  • Blacks can't be racists, prejudiced sure but not racist. To be racist you have to have the ability to assert your beliefs into practice, like segregation..or shoot someone 42 times and get off.

  • Anyone can be racists. Asserting yourself has nothing to do with it. A racist is a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

  • belief AND ACTION......

anyone can believe the ethnic group they belong to is superior. If you ASSERT this superiority through actions, that is true RACISM.

I believe that old definition of "thinking your race is better" is far out of touch with reality

  • You are delusional.

  • BOR didn't know who he was messin' with, eh? We all know O'Reilly is one of the most ignorant and racist bigots out there. The whole time he was displaying himself as an imbisile... degrading, chategorizing, judging etc. Why is he still on the air?

    God bless you Dr. Lewis!

I enjoyed reading the rest of the comments posted here and agree w/ most of them.

  • WOW!!! thats crazy... Oreilly is a racist huh?? Yeah do you have any proof of that??? any real proof not an article from the daily koss. Get a clue man.. seriously..

  • I don't think Bill O is racist, nevertheless I can certainly understand why individuals may draw that conclusion.

  • I noticed that Black American Intellectual are open minded and willing to analyze and understand situations than their white citizens...It's a viewpoint drawn from all the talk shows that I watched on CNN, FOX, ABC and other networks...

  • LOL

  • why not just say O'Reilly is a ridiculous asshole and leave it at that. (that being said, the prof answered near perfectly of course)

  • I also have Professor Lewis. I am a student in his Black Studies class. If you get the chance to attend City College, you must take one of his classes. He's informed, intelligent and highly educated. He's teaching me a lot about the culture and it's time folks start learning about their culture too. I won't take into account that he's a Mets fan.

  • Mr. Lewis did an excellent job of answering questions that were not framed in a manner that actually welcomed discussion. It was very clear that BOR had a clear agenda and was not willing to receive anything that contradicted his ill-formed presumptions. It is unfortunate that our Democratic nation is so closed to critique. History shows us that this nation was built, not upon blind loyalty, but upon the very spirit of radical dissension that Rev. Wright offers. Freedom is often uncomfortable.

  • BOR always has a clear agenda. He is not interested in objectie reporting, only furthering his own agenda. Just watch and see what happenes when he has a guset with a view that differs from his own. He shuts them down and tells them they're wrong. He is one of the most tyranically oppressive people I know of.

  • This guy is my current professor and I must say he is the man. He handled this asshole very well and in a very diplomatic and calm way.

  • If a particular sermon catches the ear, it does make you think and raise discussions as Dr. Lewis stated.

BOR who I felt was incredibly rude doesnt quite understand the history of the black church and sees differently due to his lack of knowledge. Dr. Lewis held his ground and his argument and that is incredibly impressive on several levels. Def. Well done.

  • I agree with Skyline Time. Dr. Lewis kicked BOR's ass and I would love to hear more from him. Dr. Lewis was informed, intelligent and knew his stuff. I learned a lot from just this short interview w/him! BOR was way out his league with this guy and it was obvious. Also obvious was that Dr. Lewis was ready for him!!

  • "The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.... I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen'.

-Jerry Falwell, The 700 Club, 9/13/01"

  • very much enjoyed this interview H.E.A.D.S. is a life style people!

  • I would love to hear more from Dr. Lewis. He seems like a great man.

  • Thanks for posting this.

It's good that Dr. Lewis and others are succinctly continuing the discussion going on in the media over race and politics.

It is not a surprise that throughout American history Blacks have played a central role in the leadership of revolutionary struggles.

These struggles have produces leaders of the caliber of Malcolm X and will produce more in the future.

  • Do remember the original context of that statement, "America's chickens are coming home to roost?" Malcolm X made it in reference to the assasination of Pres. Kennedy, ie America, and the President, deserved it. That's why Pastor Wright used that statement for 911. America deserved deserved 911, he said, as, he would say, it deserved Presiden Kennedy's assasination. America's deserving both events was what both events had in common. Not one of Malcom's better statements, or Wright's.

  • I disagree.

9/11 or Kennedy's assassination, are examples of how unstable the capitalist or imperialist (as malcolm x correctly identified it) systems is.

No one deserved it. Neither Malcolm nor Wright said that.

Rather, like Dr. Lewis said it was put out there, to promote discussion.

These politics need to be discussed.

The fact is that the US does have troops in S. Korea, Pueto Rico, Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosova, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, Nigeria, Columbia, and many many more.

  • is that "americas chickens coming home to roost" speech on youtube??

  • See Martin Luther Kings's "The Drum Major Instinct" to edify your misconceptions about the relationship between sermons and global policies...

  • Since when do you hear sermons on foreign policy? And if my church adopted a "White Value System" and posted it on our website, as UCC has done with their Black Value System, wouldn't that be viewed by some as racist?

  • Sermons on foreign policy have practically always existed. The crusades didn't just accidentally organize.

I would be initially suspicious, but I'd reserve judgment for the "white value system" until I had read and understood its context.

Simply having the word white in it wouldn't make it racist.

  • I attend a Unitarian Universalist church that is majority White and we talk about these issues all the time. Also, the problem is that whiteness is often assumed as norm and so does not have to be named, such that "white values" are often simply positied as human values, family values, etc... These are values that come from a specific cultural paradigm that is normalized. In this way, those of us who are left out must often name these things for ourselves so that they reflect who we are.
