Evander Holyfield - Lennox cleverly waited until Holyfield was 37 years old to finally muster up the courage to fight him. Holyfield had already once retired with a congenital heart defect and looked a shadow of his late 90's-Early 90's prime. After Holyfield winning a controversial decision against Vaughn Bean in 1998, Lennox Lewis realised this was the "perfect moment" to face Evander Holyfield
I don't understand how anyone can say "tyson in his prime was unbeatable" when he actually did lose in his "prime" against Douglas! WTF! Tyson was awesome, but he was beatable, and I don't think he ever beat a great fighter. On his way up he beat a lot of scrubs, and a soft champion at the time he ascended to the top. He was awesome though...I'm not saying he wasn't. But let's get a reality check going here people.
so they didnt give the fight to the bigger fighter backing up all the time. I agree that techinically Lewis out pointed him but letting holyfield come forward as the agressor most of the fight probably left a bad taste for the judges. yeah he outboxed him but the only fighter that truly beat holyfield, took the fight from him was bowe in their first fight. I think Lewis won this fight, but he didn't beat him convincingly like Riddick Bowe beat Holyfield. Bowe would have KO'd Lewis. In my opinion, Lewis retired so he wouldn't have to get face Klitschko in a rematch.
@DocWyoming dude your right in some partys but not others, he beat ruddock who was classified as a young george foreman knockout man at the time, foreman was old which is why he didnt fight him, he KOed holmes, and he didnt fight lewis in 1996 because he wanted to rematch evander and when did he run from evander i ask? yeah he didnt fight mercer or witherspoon but he did fight ruddock when bowe and holyfield didnt. i appreciate your points but some i just think are a bit inacurate. Schooled by Buster, Lennox, and Evander.

I've watched the fight and scored it closely 3 times--once when I watched it live, once about 3 years later, and once today. Each time I had it close, including 6-5-1 in favor of Lewis this time around. I don't see how this was a travesty. It was a close fight.

Evander Holyfield was cheated. Lewis did not win this fight by any means whatsoever. Lewis never connected well when everyone thought he did, although he did a few times. The punches slid off Holyfield. Holyfield cut Lewis up. Holyfield is already remembered as a better heavyweight than Lewis. Holyfield will never be surpassed in boxing achievements nor in title holding length. Honestly, the fight was biased and geared towards Lewis from the beginning. Either way the judges were not qualified.
Just look at their faces. Lewis looks like he just lost with four of a kind to a straight flush. Holyfield looks relieved to get away with a draw. Don King, I hope you die a painful death and rot in hell.
Rigged! One of the most disgraceful decision in the history of boxing. Eugeina Williams was paid off by Don King. Lewis absolutely belted Hollyfield in this fight.
It's funny how so many people below try to play down or tarnish the legacy of Lennox Lewis. I'm willing to bet vital organs that if he had the Stars and Stripes rather than the Union Jack in his background, he would be praised to the heavens. What a joke.
Lewis won that fight not even close those judges should have been in prison over that!! Totally fixed Ali even made comments claiming that it was fixed!!!!
Its nice to hear some Americans say that Lewis was robbed, i always remember watching this fight and celebrating when i thought Lewis had won only to be given that joke of an outcome!!
I take my hat off to the american commentators being so honest about this. The British commentators tentatively thought lewis had won but were erring on the side of caution, so when i saw/heard the american version, i was expecting them to back Holyfield, but they didn't. Good to see they didn't let patriotism blur their perspective.
I had the fight 115-113 Lewis, as had the British TV commentators. Calling this a draw is thus hardly absurd or a travesty. Lewis looked more impressive, but was sleeping through a few rounds too many.
Holyfield will forever be considered greater than Lennox Lewis. Holyfield beat the better fighter and ranks higher on both p4p all-time list and Heavyweight list. Lennox beat a way past prime Holyfield (and never dominated either fight actually) and a disgustingly past prime Tyson. Holyfield beat the likes of George Foreman (before George won the title for the second time), a MUCH better version of Tyson, Bowe, DeLeon, Qawi, Moorer etc etc.
well im briish and i see it different.a lot depends on how you score aggression,i found it a hard fight to score, ithink i had 3 rounds even which you have to accept can go either way,a pro judge should nearly always be able to split around, holyfield tried to work lewis neutralized him but didnt force the point,if you gave all three rounds to H i would have it even.when lewis punched H through ropes it was on the break.i make lewis the winner but have to say he didnt make it his.
Honestly I think they scored it right, it was a draw. If Lewis did SOMETHING during 9th, 10th, and 11th round the fight would've been his. Holyfield look old and slow the entire fight and due to Lewis' height he wasn't able to land his trademark headbutts.
Thi$ ha$ been another one of Lewi$'s great performance$, without-a-doubt. Lewis proved him$elf a$ the Pinnacle of 'heavyweight' champ$. The rea$on for his loss to Holyfield wa$...I think that we all know! Lennox undisputedly beat every heavyweight competitor, out there. I could only wonder who would have been as skilled as Lennox, as a Heavyweight champ. Maybe 'Mahamad' Ali would have been the only one to give Lewis a 'good' (good match-up) fight; Lewis being the victorious of the two;)
Lewis clearly lost. He played it safe and ran out of gas during rounds 9, 10 & 11. His reaction to the tie decision is another example of piss poor sportsmanship in sports.
As a very long foxing fan, I do not think that anyone could have called this fight anything but a R-O-B. Lewis is the best heavyweight boxer that was out-there! He beat every known competitor/champ. Le's face it, he would have also destroyed Klitschko! Politics gave the 'W' to Evander...how shameful of that of the judges, but how lucrative for them, as well. I am no longer as enthusiastic about boxing because of these types of decisions made.
No matter how many times I watch this fight I score Holyfield the winner. Several rounds were 10-10 and when Holyfield scored more effectively in the rounds he won. Lewis was not impressive in this fight. Had Holyfield gone to the body more early on it would have been a tko in the 10th.
Tyson was not overrated. Tyson in his prime could defeat anybody. His downfall was that he did not have the discipline that Cus D'Amato instilled in him after he died. Lennox Lewis didn't want to fight Tyson until Tyson was older. Plus, Don King screwed Tyson out of a rematch with Douglas to set up the Holyfield fight, he wanted Holyfield to get the belt after Douglas. Had Tyson fought Douglas, he would have one. Holyfield vs. Tyson would've been much earlier
oh man i remember that i love both those fighters but lewisclearly won that fight i guess the judges who scored that fight were the same judges who robbed roy jones of the gold medal in the loympicsand if not they were at least related to them fucked up day for lennox
@DATCMOTO - yh i agree with CarlesX7 how can you say he wasnt one of the greats just because Tyson would of beaten him in his prime lol dont be silly he acheived alot proved himself against every fighter that stepped up to him...if he lost a fight he always make the rematch happen and win, dont forget lewis wasnt exactly in his prime when he fought Tyson...Lennox Lewis was one of the greats why cant people just recognise that.
shut ur fuckin mouth DATCMOTO and tepiacapower. lewis is one of the greatest boxers ever, top three, this was the biggest travesty in the history of boxing. holy got dominated. now tyson did beat himself, but he also lost to five others, only two of which (holy and lewis) were any good. every advantage tyson ever had was mental for the most part. he had speed and power but so did a lot of guys. he preyed on a weak mind. lewis wouldnt have fallen into that trap, holyfeild wouldve.
Before this fight, Don King contacted Lennox and wantted to be Lennox's manager, but Lennox refused him, so Don King robbed Lennox's victory. I got 119-112 for Lennox.
Shut up commentators; how arrogant. Holyfield matched Lewis throughout this fight. Professional judges are well aware that in order for an UNDISPUTED champion to be crowned, a completely different criteria has to be met. The fighter must, not only, win, but MUST DO IT IN AN UNDISPUTED WAY. LEWIS DID NOT, and; therefore, the judges accurately gave it a draw. Hats off to the experts.
Pretty hard? Tyson has no names in their prime on his record. He was merely exposed when the competition stepped up. Remember...Lewis and Holyfield were actually older than Tyson. I do not see Tyson as that much better at any time to go as far from complete domination at the hands of Lewis to actually even dream of beating him both at their primes.
i was watchin this live and i remeber just being in a state of shock after hearing the decision, there was no doubt in my mind this was highway robbery
everybody's using the word travesty. lewis and his supporters should be smiling they got a draw and not a loss. it was an even fight i would have given the decision to hollyfield. to cry about a decision that was very close the way lewis, foreman, the announcer and other s did is a travesty. another boxer proved once again that lewis is an average & ordinary boxer, never to be in the top 10 of all time.
travesty my ass it was a close fight. Holyfield was the agressor. this was a fight for the heavy weight belt and lenix thought he could win flicking jabs and backing up. he didnt deserve the win in the 1st fight
Why can't judges score fights! It really fucking pisses me off more than anything. And its not just in Boxing, it happens in UFC too. If I was a fighter and I got robbed of a victory that I CLEARLY deserved then I wouldn't just take it on the chin, I would fucking go crazy and kill those judges. What fight were those fuckers watching x_X
let see, lewis about 6 in. taller, few 10's heavier, yet running away from a smaller, but very fit Holyfield. winner? I believe Holyfield won and he was even better in the second fight. Even today Holyfield is better at the age of 47 than most of the heavy weights out there today. He is not in his prime, yet beat Value. was robbed and still fighting against all odds. he should fight Haye ok him and retire after beating botha.
The decision was bad enough. But in my opinion had Holyfield been honest and stepped up and SAID Lewis should have won and refused the victory or whatever, it would have been a great thing for the sport. It could have brought a lot of attention to crooked judges, or at least unqualified judges.
He deserved to win that one no doubt about it. But all the crying about being robbed, give me a break. What about Mercer being "robbed" when they gave that victory to Lewis? That's boxing, it happens to all of them once in a while...
I think that Holyfield for the clinching combination is stronger than Lewis and I think a fair result, and the greatest boxers in history, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson
Cowardly, stupid refs ? Nah, unless there was a clear knockdown by either fighter, a Brit in America against an American boxer/institution under DK, what was to be expected ... however Holyfield was given a boxing lesson.
I wasn't mad because the way lewis fought. He ran from Holyfield too much and Holyfield had to eat alot of jabs to get inside. There styles match up poorly anyway it was a very boring fight, neither of them deserved a win guys they shouldn't have even h ad a rematch. Holyfield should have just retired and vacated his title to let the better boxer have it.
Lewis was the better boxer, BUT he was also lazy.. NEVER assume you are winning you because the aggressor always gets extra pts
All my life I have always been of the opinion that, if a unified belt is on the line, the fighter with the burden of proof is the one that needs to REMOVE any doubt in the judges mind as to who is the undisputed champ. That means to make their opponent look more inexperienced himself; and yes, a knockout would guarantee that. In this case, it didn't happen. Based on that premise, I understand why the judges came close. My unbiased opinion:)
Lewis dominated. He should have won the fight. This is a blackeye for boxing in the United States. Hey, I love Holyfield, I always want an American to hold the belt, but we must be honest. Lewis won this fight hands down.
I remember that this decision was so controversial, it prompted an HBO special where there was a sit down with both fighters, Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant. It was awkward to even listen to Evander being evasive when questioned about the decision during that interview. Yep...a travesty it was indeed..but Lennox made up for it in the rematch.
you want to be the best you hae to go get it. holyfield was initiating things. boxing is not a chess match. I think when tyson was 20 he would have beat holyfield and lewis at the same time. and ali, marcionio as well. tyson at his best was unbeatable
@tonylee1973 If by Tyson at his best u mean Tyson in his very best individual fight, maybe, but no one is unbeatable. when tyson was 20 he couldve beaten anyone ya, but would he have, different story. when he was 20 he was fighting guys like trevor berbick, tomato cans mostly. Holyfield, Ali, Lewis, much better than anyone tyson ever beat, marciano would get raped tho. if boxing aint a chess match, how did Lewis have so much success, much more than tyson, playin chess in the ring?
@tonylee1973 Thats a cute theory, but the fact remains that Tyson didnt beat anyone relevant. In his prime he couldnt knock out James Tillis, so to say he'd beat Ali is ridiculous.
lennox is the greatest of his time and possibly the greatest ever , regardless all actions taken by convicted murderer don king like lettin his paper champs duckin lewis , trying to keep lewis off of the top of the heap .
DON KING , HELL AWAITS YOU , YOU CONVICTED MURDER , YOU PLANTED SO MUCH DEMON SEED .
that lewis was old junk i crap. Klitschko retired at a staggering 34 yrs old as the champion. he came bk three years later at 37 and won bk his belt. 37 by the way is how old lennox was when he hung them up. klitschko is now 38 and still not only dominates but still has the belt. He still has yet to be knocked down, and still only has 2 losses. So not buying the old argument.
Lewis wanted tyson in 96 and the fight never happened, it went to court and lewis won loss of earnings so dont blame lewis for that.. tyson's prime wasnt even 96 it was more like 88.. bruno was the first man to rock tyson but that means nothing..
Lewis won this fight and will be remembered as the last great heavyweight
round 1 lewis 2. lewis 3. holyfield 4. draw 5. lewis 6.lewis 7.lewis 8.draw 9.draw 10.holyfield 11. lewis 12. lewis my final result 7 - 3 - 2 for lewis lewis should have won this fight but the second one was much closer to draw. who cares anyways.. he got his money by doing nothing in the second fight, he should be happy.
holyfield was desperate through out the fight to make some points... i cant understand how this was a draw... maybe is because evander was don king´s fighter... so sick
poor lewis, wah wah wah crybaby. If you want to make sure you win a fight, then you should go for a knockout. Lewis never tried this and that is why I am not a fan of him.
mid 90s lewis was to good for anybody. he wasnt excitin but he did his job, winning fights. he beat tyson when they both were past it so theres no excuses there. as for this fight another clear case of cheatin. lewis is top 3, in his prime the best ever. he was quicker than tyson bigger and strong all factors point towards lewis bein the better fighter.
The thing I remember is, 3 rounds or so Evander clearly won, 6 rounds Lewis clearly won, which left 4 or 4 rounds either even, or if you think the challenger should take it from the champ, then you give them to Evander. That's why Lewis allowed himself to not get the win. It was his own fault.
Then in the rematch, Evander did better, but they gave him the loss.
Lewis deserved to win, but boxing is a screwy business.
I believe Lewis won this fight but, that belt is WAY to high on Lewis, its completely protecting his sides and his belly, I cant believe the ref didnt call him on it, he must of been an amateur ref, but why in the world would they get an amateur for a main event like this? Lewis had Holyfield cornered a few times but then he went back, he shouldve just went for the kill but instead he left it to the judges which is always a mistake...
True, true, true.....it was ridiculously high. But as Lennox says himself, it's not cheating if you get away with it. And Lewis style is not particularly fan friendly, which is perhaps why they gave many rounds to the pressuring Holyfield.
Lewis will never be and should not be remembered as one of the greats.
He was a good fighter amid mediocre fighters.
He would not have lasted 3 rounds with Mike Tyson at his peak.
There was only one person who ever
beat Mike Tyson..
Mike Tyson.
Matthew 12:30 (The Message) 30"This is war, and there is no neutral ground. If you're not on my side, you're the enemy; if you're not helping, you're making things worse.
Except if you ask loads of people who arent into sport who lennox lewis is, they won't know the answer. If you say mike tyson, their brain is going to struggle but come to the conclusion that he was a good boxer.
@CarlesX7 Well said my friend, we said. Tyson was incredible, we all know that, and he messed things up. But i cannot stand it when people always go on about his prime today, it is so easy for people to just say, "he would not have lasted 3 rounds with Tyson in his prime" - Get over it, Lennox Lewis was awesome, an amazing fighter, maybe not as good as Tyson, but god that does not mean he wasnt any good. Manny Steward sees Lewis as top 5 all time heavyweight, i may agree
@CarlesX7 Exactly Lewis is Top 5 of all time. Tyson is not - he was a bully boy. He was great spectacle with superb hand speed especially v Thomas and spinks. However Douglas schooled him and Holyfield battered him TWICE. He did not beat a single proper contender after Ruddock and ducked Lewis for years before he could no longer.
@CarlesX7 Lewis dodged tyson while he was in his prime if u remember alot of us never knew who lewis was before tyson was locked up but when he was in jail all of a sudden lewis is taking on every fight he could and before tyson went to jail lennox was a good boxer his promoter keep his profile low and take a look at the fight lewis ran the whole fight im not saying stand their and let tyson hit you but at least fight
nob head, he fought the best fighters of his generation, tyson never fought any in his prime. your just another bum who thinks tyson was great because he fought like an animal against fighters who were shyte.
c'mon, name me decent fighters who tyson beat......
lewis dominated his division, and therefore for me is the best heavyweight of his time. you should not take that away from him
@BourbonJRA Well said. Acccording to Tyson's fans (and excuses for his defeats) he must have had an incredibly short prime- he lost to Douglas aged 23, and in his "prime" was taken the distance by James Tillis, Mitch Green, James Smith and Tony Tucker. He never beat a great heavyweight in his prime. Tyson was exciting when knocking people out, but boxing is about all sorts of qualities, not just punching power. Lennox Lewis was a greater heavyweight. .
That is the biggest bullshit. Lewis clean out the division and has a Holyfield on his resume while Holyfield was a champ (by beating Tyson twice). Tyson doesn't have a great heavyweight on his resume who was in their prime. Larry Holmes was 38 and was coming off of a 2 1/2 year lay off. That is such bull shit statement. Lewis was the best for 7-8 year period. Tyson reign lasted 4 years. Could of, would of, should of dont mean shit. You either do or you don't. To be or not to be.
its all well and good to say that just because tyson wasn't in his "prime" it wasn't a fair fight but it doesn't always work out like that in ur perfect mind. they fought and the better man won which tyson admits
@ DATCMOTO : The same could be said of Tyson. The mid to late 80's isn't exactly remembered for the quality of the heavyweight division. Tyson was a great fighter, but made to look invincible due to the low quality and general mess the division was in. There was no dominant personality (apart from Holmes in the early `80s) like there was in the 60's and 70's.
Lewis deserves a lot more respect from people like you who have bought into the Tyson myth.
he fuking beat em cus hes a ded animal who is beaten up by one of the greats lennix lewis who cares if he wasnt at his prime nor was lewis he was 37 and still going
Absolute disgrace

Lennox "The Vulture" Lewis: career breakdown
Here are Lennox Lewis' most difficult opponents:
Evander Holyfield - Lennox cleverly waited until Holyfield was 37 years old to finally muster up the courage to fight him. I had the fight 115-113 Lewis, as had the British TV commentators. Calling this a draw is thus hardly absurd or a travesty. Lewis looked more impressive, but was sleeping through a few rounds too many.

Lennox did NOT do enough to beat Holyfield even though Holyfield was past his prime.Prime Holyfield will not have problems with Lewis.
xxxpain 1 year ago
It doesn't matter who won this bout.

Tyson would've been much earlier

shut ur fuckin mouth DATCMOTO and tepiacapower. lewis is one of the greatest boxers ever, top three, this was the biggest travesty in the history of boxing. holy got dominated. now tyson did beat himself, but he also lost to five others, only two of which (holy and lewis) were any good. every advantage tyson ever had was mental for the most part. he had speed and power but so did a lot of guys. he preyed on a weak mind. lewis wouldnt have fallen into that trap, holyfeild wouldve.

Hats off to the experts.
hartistry1957 1 year ago
Pretty hard? Tyson has no names in their prime on his record. He was merely exposed when the competition stepped up. Remember...Lewis and Holyfield were actually older than Tyson. I do not see Tyson as that much better at any time to go as far from complete domination at the hands of Lewis to actually even dream of beating him both at their primes.

let see, lewis about 6 in. taller, few 10's heavier, yet running away from a smaller, but very fit Holyfield. winner? I believe Holyfield won and he was even better in the second fight. Even today Holyfield is better at the age of 47 than most of the heavy weights out there today. He is not in his prime, yet beat Value. was robbed and still fighting against all odds. he should fight Haye ok him and retire after beating botha.

MrDhcracker 2 years ago
All my life I have always been of the opinion that, if a unified belt is on the line, the fighter with the burden of proof is the one that needs to REMOVE any doubt in the judges mind as to who is the undisputed champ. That means to make their opponent look more inexperienced himself; and yes, a knockout would guarantee that. In this case, it didn't happen. Based on that premise, I understand why the judges came close. My unbiased opinion:)
hartistry1957 2 years ago
Lewis dominated. He should have won the fight. This is a blackeye for boxing in the United States. Hey, I love Holyfield, I always want an American to hold the belt, but we must be honest. Lewis won this fight hands down.

llcjord 2 years ago

AzureSky001 2 years ago 2
True, true, true.....it was ridiculously high. But as Lennox says himself, it's not cheating if you get away with it. And Lewis style is not particularly fan friendly, which is perhaps why they gave many rounds to the pressuring Holyfield.

Except if you ask loads of people who arent into sport who lennox lewis is, they won't know the answer. If you say mike tyson, their brain is going to struggle but come to the conclusion that he was a good boxer.
Kasdas2 2 years ago
@CarlesX7 Well said my friend, we said. Tyson was incredible, we all know that, and he messed things up. But i cannot stand it when people always go on about his prime today, it is so easy for people to just say, "he would not have lasted 3 rounds with Tyson in his prime" - Get over it, Lennox Lewis was awesome, an amazing fighter, maybe not as good as Tyson, but god that does not mean he wasnt any good. Manny Steward sees Lewis as top 5 all time heavyweight, i may agree
Tracywithafacey 7 months ago
@CarlesX7 Exactly Lewis is Top 5 of all time. Tyson is not - he was a bully boy. He was great spectacle with superb hand speed especially v Thomas and spinks. However Douglas schooled him and Holyfield battered him TWICE. He did not beat a single proper contender after Ruddock and ducked Lewis for years before he could no longer.

lewis dominated his division, and therefore for me is the best heavyweight of his time. you should not take that away from him
BourbonJRA 2 years ago 2
@BourbonJRA Well said. Acccording to Tyson's fans (and excuses for his defeats) he must have had an incredibly short prime- he lost to Douglas aged 23, and in his "prime" was taken the distance by James Tillis, Mitch Green, James Smith and Tony Tucker. He never beat a great heavyweight in his prime. Tyson was exciting when knocking people out, but boxing is about all sorts of qualities, not just punching power. Lennox Lewis was a greater heavyweight. .
mizofan 7 months ago
That is the biggest bullshit. Lewis clean out the division and has a Holyfield on his resume while Holyfield was a champ (by beating Tyson twice). Tyson doesn't have a great heavyweight on his resume who was in their prime. Larry Holmes was 38 and was coming off of a 2 1/2 year lay off. That is such bull shit statement. Lewis was the best for 7-8 year period. Tyson reign lasted 4 years. Could of, would of, should of dont mean shit. You either do or you don't. To be or not to be.

fjhodges 2 years ago
@ DATCMOTO : The same could be said of Tyson. The mid to late 80's isn't exactly remembered for the quality of the heavyweight division. Tyson was a great fighter, but made to look invincible due to the low quality and general mess the division was in. There was no dominant personality (apart from Holmes in the early `80s) like there was in the 60's and 70's.
Lewis deserves a lot more respect from people like you who have bought into the Tyson myth.
