Why do they call the spin on the ball "English"?

@SHOTTONLEGEND The english first put a leather tip on the cue and so, were able to spin the cue ball, thus it became known as english. I read that either in the official billiards rule book or a magazine article in Billiards Digest. I also read that in England they don't call it "english" they call it "side" or "spin." Looking back even further in pool history, players used the fat end of the stick as the front but used the skinny tail end (called the"Que") on rail shots.

@Natesdeskyou Sure, I call them "Spuds" and "Bobbies" I have since I was a kid, my uncle tought me to play pool and that was what he always called them, therefore I followed suit. I'm not sure if that's what you heard as all over England there is different names for them. I hope this helped you though.

I just played this English guy a few times 15 years ago and i remember "spuds" but didnt remember the other word, i know it was 2 or 3 sylables so i'm sure thats it. Perfect! I'm so happy to finally learn this again! Thank you!!! :) One of our very common terms for them is "big-ones" and "little-ones"  (big ones being the bigger numbers 9 to 15) thx!!!

Yes, E.S. was a great player at one time. He seems to have lost his "edge" that he had, say 15 years ago. And has pretty much always struggled against Reyes, Bustamante, and a few others.

I never did care for the way he conducts himself when the chips are down. I guess it's the competition factor.

What did the commentator mean (about Efren), "...not a great straight pool player"? Efren has got to be one of the best (top ten) straight pool players in the world. He's certainly top five in one pocket. The commentary this match was arguable at best. Some might call it absolute B.S.

One of the commentators is Mike Sigel, voted the best living player of all time so I'm pretty sure he knows what he is talking about. As far as Efren and his straight pool skills, he was talking about Efren not being known for his straight pool skills. He has been known for 9ball but this video was back in 2006 and the IPT tour has gone under since then. Efren has worked on his straight pool skills since then but he still mostly plays 9 and 10ball.
