Daisy is gorgeous. One of our greyhounds' sits but not on command. I think she does it because she knows she looks cute and tends to do it when someone's eating, knowing full well that she'll get a scrap from your plate!! Tell her to sit and she looks at you as if you're stupid.
Beautiful dogs. It should be compulsary to own at least one!
@erectance That's always the main worry people seem to have with greyhounds. There are quite a few people who never let theirs off the leash, and that makes me kind of sad. The thing is, because these dogs are so fast, distance means a lot less to them, so they'll get considerably further from you without getting worried. Another thing Daisy here does is spend ages sniffing at something while you carry on walking, just so she can gallop to catch up with you.
That's one fast dog. About how many miles do you think can he clock? Lovely dog. If I had the room I'd get a few of them. They certainly need to run a lot. :)
guy's as much as i respect anyone and everyone's opinions i have two grayhounds and have had them for a very long time. i addopted and recently we had to but my oldest down. and training greyhounds is fun and in a way hard to do. mostly because like you said, you were wondering if your greyhound was weird because she wouldent sit. greyhounds are very unique and we never trained ours to sit. only to lay down. greyhounds have very little fat on their butt so it makes it painful for them to sit.
greyhounds can absolutely sit on command! as far as i've seen, they're very intelligent creatures. i work at a doggie day care in california, and the needlenoses i work with are lovely, and will always sit if i ask. :]
Watching a group is absolutely stunning. I have 2 greys of my own and simply adore them - though when presented with the chance to run they will do it without a second thought. I pretty much have a rut that goes around my backyard from them racing each other for so long! Haha, but it's fine, grass grows and their happiness is priceless.
i am getting more and more obsessed with greyhound. they are incredible pet. my friend adopt one. we think my brothers dog (he get from animal shelter) is greyhound mixed with black lab. greyhound is one of the sweetest, gentlest, elegant creature of the world.
They are the laziest dog - like big cats. They conserve their energy all day then have a spurt of energy and exhuberance. When I was a child I thought they were not the most attractive dog. We are taught by media to love fluffy cute pups. But God, the grey hound is elegant, kind, loyal, gentle and the most beautiful creature ever to live. They are like dog royalty. I never had a dog in my life but now I have a lovely ex racer. Never imagined I'd have this breed. Best thing I ever did.
I'm pretty sure that other greyhounds can sit on command as well.
We've had a greyhound for about 8 years, we had to let her sleep in about 1 year ago. It crushed my heart for a couple of days. Aura, our dog, could also give hands on command, or just with a cookie in front of her :) Also sleeping 90% of the day, begging for snacks and running with the speed of lightning.
People, these dogs are tortured, give them a new life, please.
I've had my ex-racer for 2 months now. I've taught him: Stay, Stop, Drop, Tucker?, GO FOR A WALK?, AH (no), Go (he won't eat until i say this... just stands over his food looking at it =), and he shakes my hand every time I feed him. It's a LONG way from the 29 words my little maltese knew, but greyhounds are deffinately not a stupid breed!
We just agopted a wonderful 5 year old retired racer Grey from Amazing Greyz here in MA. He is such an amazing dog. We're pretty sure we'll adopt another once we are all settled in.
Well, about that "on command" thing: you have to remember, hounds as a group are a stubborn lot. I had a beagle growing up named Rocky-we couldn't get him to sit down and do much of anything unless we had bacon in a little plastic bag he could get at. Try clicker training. It might work, since it is reward based.
Daisy's a beauty! We adopted our brindle girl 20 months ago - best dog I ever owned! So gentle, loving, and sweet. Learned to sit, give a paw, play dead (we say relaaaaax lol) and knows about 40 other words like bedroom, window, van, backyard, etc. Great travelers, too! No shedding, rarely barks, no doggie smell!! Make a fast friend - adopt a greyhound!
This video inspired us to adopt a Greyhound. We used to watch it before we got our boy. Wilson would like to thank Daisy for helping him find his home!
Some Greys have trouble with "sit" due to the large size of their rear haunches. Their butts can't reach the ground. They often do better with being asked to lay down.
I just love your video. We have 2 IGs, and I just love to see them running like little weird-os around the yard! I look forward to the day I am able to adopt an x-racer. And props to you, and everyone else who chose adoption!!
At a greyhound show, we met this absolute beast of a greyhound, called Boss. Huge, he was! And Daisy was quite taken with him, it must be said... Daisy's quite a petite hound, sometimes mistaken for a whippet!
Mr Kottke sounds like the popular opinion here... I really regret not paying more attention to the audioswap when I did it, does anybody know the name of this song? I'd love to know it!
My Maggie (also a rescued track dog) loves to please and is quick to figure out what we want from her. She sits on command, shakes hands, lies down, rolls over (not very gracefully) and can play pattycake. Mostly she loves getting hugs and playing fetch - she brings the ball back and will place it in my hand if I ask her.
I must say, I'm very impressed by your hound's repertoire! We thought Daisy was talented, but we are comparing her to Katie, who is as stubborn as anything...
I'm going to look for videos of your Grey doing these amazing things, and if I don't find them, well, I really hope you make a video of it soon! Let me know if you do! :3
Loved this video, greyhounds are such loving animals. I enjoy watching them run free like this and not on some cruddy track for the benefit of the betting companies who dont care what happens after the race.
Keep at it Daisy, enjoy your run, you deserve it!
I respect your views but if you think they are ugly, why watch a video of them? I personally think pugs and chihuahuas are ugly so wouldn't want to watch videos of them. Greyhounds are beautiful, loving dogs and in my opinion there are no more graceful dogs on Gods earth.
i used to have a blue greyhound called mandy , but unfortunatley she died of a heart attack wen she was 2 :( that was 2 yeers ago on the 1st of june this yeer and i still havent maneged to get my parents to get a new one ! R.I.P mandy x
and btw happy 4th birthday on 20th of may (last wednesday ) xx
It's not only the running, but it's the turning on a dime. Taking the corners on rails. Greyhounds aren't just left turn only dogs like Nascar races...rather, they are rally car racers capable of high speed, quick turns, extreme acceleration, and stopping on a dime. I love them.
she's absolutely gorgeous!. I have two retired greys from 'Greyhounds as pets' in Perth, Western Australia, just so happens I was lucky enough to be able to bring home brother and sister! :). They too love to stretch their legs every now and again. For about 3 minutes, then they collapse on the floor and do nothing for the rest of the day! LOL
We have a beagle mix and a lurcher named Emma, a greyhound mix. It's just pure pleasure to see the sighthounds run. We'd love to get a grey at some point. We're fortunate to live right next to a school which has a fenced-in kiddie playground we visit after hours with our girls. Until we can fence in our own yard, it's a terrific arrangement!
Just one of the pleasures of owning the second fastest land mamal on the planet I have one and fostered 12 they are great and all bar one lived with our cats. Great vid check out ours at greyhound rescue Fred and Greyhoud rescue Flynn on Youtube too.
Greys are the cleanest of Dogs by their nature. When you first bring him or her home, have a quick walk round the house then straight to the place where they will go toilet. Wait until they have finished and take them back in the house. Give them love and time and you will never want another breed of Dog!
I have some questions about these greyhounds. I'm thinking of adopting one. I know they're fine in apartments if they're exercised daily so that's ok. But I heard they're not potty trained so I want to know how that's accomplished.
Also if I take the dog with me on a run, will it run at my pace or will it want to bolt away and tug on the leash? Basically I've seen that they only have 2 speeds, walk and RUN LIKE MAD. Can they keep their speed down to my running speed?
they are potty trained you just need to show them where to do there business it should run at your speed but wont run for long they are not known for their stamina so a brisk walk usually does it for them
Usually greyhounds are housetrained to an extent at least. If they are not, however, you just take them back to basics and train them as you would a puppy. My mum's bitch can and does go for hours without asking to go out but mine needs to go more often (smaller bladder!) She still goes all night no probs - even if we have a lie in!
As for the jogging pace, mine will go into an extended trot along side the bike quite happily so you'll probably be fine. She'll sleep the rest of the day too!
Forgot a question...Heard bad things regarding rescued greyhounds and small dogs and cats. How are they with them? I wouldn't want any little critters to get killed.
In this country (UK) very few rehomed/rescued dogs are allowed to be kept in flats or apartments. Greyhounds are one of the few that are! They're pretty much ideal for that kind of thing, they adapt really well to all kinds of homes! As long as they get their walks and there's a comfy place to sleep. Just keep them worn down with a couple of twenty minute walks a day and they will adjust their schedule around you! As for your question about other pets, I may have to go onto another comment...
Right, where was I? It's all about training when taking a greyhound into a home with smaller pets. Daisy, in the video, never chased and so has never been a problem. My Gran's Grey, Katie, was a racing dog for a fair while, and quite good at it! She moved into a house with a cat and took an interest, but with confident training, she's lost the habit to chase in the home. If she saw a bunny outside she'd go for it, but she's fine with the cat. Moving onto yet another comment...
Yeah, so... You'd probably be best off asking your local rehoming branch about the greyhound which best suits you. They'll know the personalities pretty well anyway. It really depends on the dog itself. If the dog is a totally dedicated chaser it may be tough to break the habit, but with dedication it will be possible. Mind you though, there are so many Greys after homes nowadays you'll be struggling not to find one suited to your situation. Good luck in your quest for your new family member!!
Are greyhounds good appartment dogs? I know appartments aren't great for dogs, but I won't live in one forever. I've heard they like to lounge around alot, ao I wondered if they ok for a small place? Theres a dog run near by, so, play and excercise is no problem outside my place. Thanks for any info.
hi there i have a greyhound my self and i love them alot as they the most loyal and affecionate dogs which always want to please u please everyone who watches this find it in your heart to care and respect these dogs
Very nice dog! I have a pit bull(male) and two boxers male and female. My female boxer is such an athlete and has a similar running style to the greyhounds, she is extremely fast. But as fast, and nice as she runs its quite not as nice as the greyhound running style. In my opinion they have the best running style of all the dogs I love how they run.
i have greyhounds, and you stand perfectly still when they come towards you, they will try and get as close to you as possible so if you even move your arms it will distract them and possible hurt you and the dog.
Young greyhounds are especially prone to hitting you, but again, dont move,
I'm sitting here crying and smiling. Our second greyhound passed away in April. We still aren't over the loss of our first. They are magnificent dogs. There is no smile like a grey-smile. Thanks for posting it. Daisy's sheer joy and exhilaration shine through so clearly.
Great song and great video. These dogs are magnificent. I can watch the running over and over in an atempt to understand how they move so efficiently.
Lovely to see her having fun. At least she doesn't threaten to bowl you over by charging at you full speed then veering off at the last second like my Daisy and her sister Maisy do.
It's beautiful watching her run. So many people ask whether I think my hounds hated their racing lives. I always say, "I don't know how they felt about the lifestyle, but they sure LOVE to run!"
It's quite surprising really. She was a non-chaser, yet she still does this. I think she was just so stubborn she refused to run that day on her trial. Anyone else have a stubborn greyhound? ^_^
My 2 have never raced but it's definitely in their blood to charge around just the same as your Daisy. Mine run straight at me, I was always told by my Grandad (who raced his) "don't move, the dog knows exactly what it's doing and where you are" so scary as it is, I have to stand like a statue, and they've never ran into me yet. My Daisy is now 11 and Maisy is nearly 10.
I hate to contradict you but my dad got run into by their first greyhound and she broke his leg in two places (above and below the knee!) My best advice is to turn your back on them when they run at you.... at least your legs are meant to bend that way and, hopefully, all you'll end up with is a bruised bum and a dented pride!!
she looks just like mine :P

That dog is beautiful. Alot of people don't respect this breed as a sporting dog. I would love to have one, but I wouldn't be able to keep up...lol

You did a good thing!! Daisy looks super happy and healthy!! We adopted our greyhound and he's the same way. Adopt more!!!

It's beautiful watching her run. So many people ask whether I think my hounds hated their racing lives. I always say, "I don't know how they felt about the lifestyle, but they sure LOVE to run!"
kaylyred 4 years ago

Daisy looks like she is having a great time. You're lucky to find that area to let her off in.
