  • You shit! Damn your awesome!

  • You're a good drummer, but you need A NEW SNARE. That one sounds too empty. You need a much better snare than that. You play good.

  • Drummers are a loud cocky bunch. The loudest mouthed ones are usually the shittiest players.

Stay humble son. You're a fine player who obviously has good taste. When you go to the ride, I think it's real nice.

  • Try to bringing that left stick down a bit more. Real soft like. Your'e getting there.

  • Wow people are brutal on here,I thought it was a fine job.

  • nobody is perfect, just kepp practicing. sounds good

  • Good job! A little heavy handed, but nice and loose feel.

  • some skunky mendo will do

  • Many of the comments have sucked so far. people, instead of criticizing why don't you try helping a little? give some honest feedback?

A couple things - practice playing ahead of, along with and behind the pulse. Play along to a metronome and practice the halftime shuffle slow! 50bpm!

Also let the playing flow and breathe more - grip down on the sticks where you SHOULD be holding them and let things flow naturally. Watch Perdie do it.

  • another suggestion, your snare is too tight for the ghost notes. You want the snare and high hat to sound the same.

  • this song is to hard for you. try it straight time. not shuffle until you get your timing down.

  • good stuff, man

  • you say guitar gary thinks that was a real nice set, absolutely was

  • thats great

  • Excellent man, Love that track

  • love it bro off the chain

  • Watch SHANNON LUCAS drum!!!!

    SHANNON LUCAS

    SHANNON LUCAS

    SHANNON LUCAS

  • FUCK YEA!

  • oh yea

  • only thing i'd say is your snare sounds a bit too tight, too much ring on your ghost notes....other than that, not bad. its a touhger beat than it seems. i can't do it right at all.

  • disagree that this needs more fills. The Dan rhythm section (bass and drums) rely on consistency. Watch their DVD 'Two against Nature' Its like clockwork, and very difficult to mimic. Well done bud.

  • Anyone that you see giving you negative comments and/or opinions ignore them. Keep practicing and don't ever quit. You'll get it man, and I already see you're on your way.

  • good job on tempo and ghost notes but not the fills. you need more fantasy they'are all the same man tatatà, tatatà, tatatà tatatà..... And stop wiht those double strokes on the toms, they are good for rock not for reggae or funky. And there's no need to beat too hard, just go sweet and dry.

  • Well done...

  • easy on your fill's bro

  • Great job!! Like the song selection and the camera angle. Go Gators!

  • Very nice. Work on the ghost notes...

Relax,,, All in all well done bro.

  • Nice!!! you have a funky feeling!!! good job!!!

  • you got chops bro!!

  • Nice feel brother. Jim Keltner is not an easy model to copy as far as feel is concerned.

  • Jim Keltner didn't play on this song. It's Bernard Purdie

  • woow, that is really amazing.... i want to play as good as you...

  • you got the technique man awesome, i gonna try it on my set tomorrow

  • Good job! Bernard Purdie is a tough one to emulate, and if any of you would like to criticize jasincarlin, post a link to YOUR video and let us judge YOU.

  • awesooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooome

  • nice

  • sweet

  • Great feel man.

  • Keep working youre doing great

  • I REALLY like the open hand technique with the cymbal bell and hihat in the chorus, but a lot of your playing is too heavy-handed. Steely Dan stuff is all about finesse.

  • chad smith snare? i cant see it that good

  • how in the deuce do you have thirty cymbals and two toms?

  • the coheed set up

  • creative criticism... take away all your cymbals but the ride and crash, start from there. Play relaxed, use your fingers more, keep your arms down and use your elbow joints to move your arms up and down. peace

  • Nice work! You play very well. Stelly Dan stuff is very chalenging. You got it down cold.

  • Great Job! Love the tune

  • good work, liked it alot

  • Naw...I thought that was good!

  • actually i dont think its good anymore, your half time shuffle is wrong. Why the fuck does your right hand stop and play a quarter note ? ? it should be doing the steady triplets !!!!

  • Keep practicing!

  • man the Purdie Shuffle is no joke

  • Comment removed

  • nice work, not an easy groove to play, if it was then the dan wouldn't have bothered getting bernard to play it. keep groovin.

  • thats funny....Im a drummer who tries to play the guitar....I keep getting the sticks caught in the strings tho.....

  • more laid back,

    then it would be fine!

  • Perfect

  • You have the pattern totally down though dont get me wrong. Awesome song too.

  • Ughgh noooo man wayyyy too early on like every note! You gotta get wayyyyy deep into the pocket with halftime shuffles like this.

  • bayloralum is right .... the feel is way to pushed and frantic .... might i suggest a little bit of pot .... some tasty green bud to chill out your feel

  • hahaha that is a great comment. I'll give it a shot...im basically just a guitar player trying to play the drums.

  • Yeah, technically you've got it! With these types of grooves it's ALL about feel. I'm a guitarist too. My 1st instrument is drums. I spent 15 years on guitar and messing around on the drums. I got a job as a drummer with my band and have been dedicated to it for the past 5 years. So for me, getting the physical and feel aspects were a bitch for the 1st year then after that it all came back like total recall! lol. Keep at it man it'll fall in place. You gotta practice as much as possible.

  • @jasincarlin As a guitar player you are a fuckin good drummer lol... I am a guitar player as well, love drums, wish I could play shuffles like you... keep on rockin"

  • @jasincarlin at least you attempt the ghost notes, most of the videos on here neglect them. NICE.

  • I think it's a pretty cool cover. I mean no one says you have to play it exactly like Purdie did! Now if you say "oh its very accurate to how Purdie plays it" than no, you're wrong. But just have fun. And the drums sound awesome.

  • Not bad but the mix was off: drums 3X louder than the recording. A little advice: try more subtlty and feeling

  • mad good, keep it up!

  • Great - really enjoyed this one.

    Made my day - thanks.

  • ghost notes are a bitch sometimes ... nice job man!

  • Dude... WHAT the HELL was that!? I'll tell you what it was: It was an abomination! Unfortunately no credit can be given for that performance. First of all, you weren't even remotely in tune with the overall melody. Secondly, you didn't even TRY to replicate the original drum beat.

This is Steely Dan we're talking about. Instead, it sounded more like a Blink 182 cover. Epic fail, bro. :(

  • Yeah i know...Sorry

  • Wow... I was expecting a barrage of insults followed by a few swear words. Either you're extremely light hearted or are being sarcastic - either one is fine by me. I hope you know that I wasn't trying to be an asshole. I simply just didn't agree with that performance. But hell, we all learn. Right? Just dedicate a little more time to the shuffle. In all honesty, it really isn't a hard beat. Sounds difficult, but it isn't... trust me.

    Take care.

  • i can take someone giving me an honest opinion. Didn't really know the song before i recorded it, but i think my video of rosanna is a pretty good shuffle. No harm, no foul brother. thanks for the comment.

  • Btw, I think you should mic your cymbals louder (though it might just be because the video isn't in high quality)

  • @jasincarlin i think you got the basic idea i think you should record it again now that you probably know the song better

  • Dude, YOU were being an asshole to him. lt's comical how you tried to get a rise out of him, and didn't. You're right, The Purdie Shuffle isn't a difficult beat, but the feel is difficult if you come from a Rock, Metal background because the approach comes from different worlds. I wouldn't expect a Joey Jordison, or Lars Ulrich to play it right either because these guys play in front of or on top of the beat. Alot of drummers don't even know what the hell The Purdie Shuffle is and it's a shame.

  • I wasn't trying to get a rise out of him at all. I said what I meant and it wasn't good; even he agreed. I was just shocked that he took it so lightly because, when I looked back on what I said, I realized I was being an ass. In any case, thanks for your input. Take care.

  • if u havent mastered the purdie shuffle or his signature fills dont put it online

  • fuck you puto baboso

  • @DigitalIntervention

The technicality is not hard, however , for a hard-hitting rock drummer to slither through it like a rattlesnake - is epic difficulty, without proper practice of course (american/french grip, ghost notes, triplet hand- feet patterns, etc)

  • @DigitalIntervention Well whether you meant to or not, it really was an asshole thing to say. And don't play dumb, you knew you were being a dick and that's why you were expecting a barrage of insults and cuss words. @jasincarlin You did a great job, I love the ghost notes and to my ears, your performance went perfectly with the record. I have only been playing for a year and a half, but people like you doing what you do gave me a lot of encouragement. Thank you.

  • You do have skills. It is nice to see you playing to this song instead of Blink 182 . When you get this stuff down tight you have Really made some bounds! Keep it up!

  • Oh please, that was FAR from an abomination, it was really good.

    1) There's no rule that you have to play a song exactly the same as a recording when you do your own version of it. If you think that that you do, then you need to re-evaluate your understanding of music

    2) The beat was just like from the song anyways

I looked at your account and it seems you make a habit of going around Youtube criticizing other drummers for not playing it "just like the recording". Stop

  • To sum up what I said before: Sounds great, I like to see drummers learn and play this type of groove. Good skills here, keep up the playing!

Sorry if this was taken negatively. That's not how it was meant (ShoesNeverWorn)! And nothing against Blink 182, I just like to see drummers play a good pocket groove! It shows a different type of skill than a lot of music you hear all the time. Good Luck and Great Playing!

  • "Dude... WHAT the HELL was that!? I'll tell you what it was: It was an abomination! ..." - Digitalintervention

    Those that can, do.

Those that can't, critisize those that can.

  • @nolobede worst snare EVERq wtf!

  • @Taylor7777ify

Well, yeah... he's no Bernard Purdi.

  • @DigitalIntervention

such a dick thing to say. someone creates something and you have to tear this apart as you sit on the sidelines like a typical asshole internet troll.

Its hard to find a bigger dan fan than me...who gives a shit if its different. It was great.

  • I like to play all of the triplet shuffle on the hi-hat, it's a little less obtrusive. But what do I know, I just taught myself the shuffle after 25 years of playing. ya got it goin' on- nice playin'.

  • Great song, nice job.

  • Nice....

  • your fills re too loud, try making it more of a ghost note

  • your saying it as if it's wrong or something

  • Love the half time shuffle at that speed even more than in Rosanna. You really groove!

  • Great drumming, interesting style, keep it up!

  • purdie shuffle

    aaaaahhhh

    love it

  • hey nice overall playing and sound, i dig that chad smith snare, how u get it to sound like that, EQs? compressions?

  • PLaying loud is fine, you just need to match up with the original groove. There was a lot of flamming going on especially in your fills.

  • hey rich...thanks for the comment. i realize i have a chemical imbalance when it comes to swiss triplets and the half time shuffle. i do however feel better after being 2 feet away from purdie playing this song on halloween, he played a small club one town away from me, and man was he pulling out all the tricks. He is an awesome drummer, and it was a pleasure to meet him. thanks again. im getting better.

  • i think you did a great job!

  • Your "ghost notes" sound like big monsters :-P But it's great to just _can_ play such notes :) Good jog IMHO and sorry for my English :)

  • This guy is funky. The ghost beat on the snare floods the beat - Purdy is playing triplets on the HH and a scattered back beat on the kick - which makes it funky. This guy's playing a Bonham type addition to Purdy's laid-back back- beat. Nonetheless, he is still funky.

  • 3rdsne- you're a prick, he does a more then an adequate job. And the snare drum having too much ring? This is effing Youtube not a hi-fi recording. There is constructive criticism and being a jerk, you crossed the line.

  • pretty damm close!

love the way you got "into" that groove.

  • Nice Job!!!

  • Not too shab...keep working hard!

  • Nice job, I like the shuffle you did. Just one comment though, your snare seems to be a little bit high pitched, try tuning to a lower pitch and see how that works, goodjob

  • godd job, I like the way you made it your own and I also liked how you felt the groove at the chorus

  • Yeah man. A true lover of the Dan....

I'd lighten up a bit on the overall groove though - try a bit of "less is more" with it.

Pretty Purdie plays this wihthout hardly hitting the skins - that's why the original is so bouncy and light. Other than that, well done bro!

  • i agree!a little lightening up(especially on the hats and the ghost notes)will take it to the next level...you're on your way!;)

  • I don't know why but I don't like sound of this snare. Everything else sounds really good :)

  • Awesome job!

  • forget these other guys. You sound good you play it differently but I like it. Sounds like John Bonham's energy meets Purdy's groove. Awesome drumming.

  • it's supposed to be laid back

  • Nice groove man! ;-) Great job!

  • Good job man. I reckon if you took the cans off you could have done even better, I know they make it hard to hear yourself. But great job anyway!! Especially the split hi-hat/ride pattern, gorgeous.

  • thanks for the comment. i wish i could blame the headphones. lol. just a very hard song for me to play.

  • Is this the punk version? Enough with the crazy fills already!

  • Good, but not played the same which could be a good thing in its own way. Sounds a bit rushed and a bit too fussy for this track. Slow down a bit, make the shuffle a bit less pronounced. Bernard plays slightly behind the beat, where as you sound slightly ahead. Have a beer and relax and then play it again. On the whole though it aint too bad but then again what the fuck do I know !

  • You rush your fills man. You need to practice with a metronome plugged into your ears and learn to relax threw the fill.

  • thanks

  • Purdie good! Nicely done....

    Bernard would be very happy!
