THANK YOU!! this is an awesome tut! I <3 dishware, and I love traditional cake plates, but this would be such an cool alternative... It also solves a sculpture problem I was having with a large installation i'm planning. I'm wondering, is there any way to find out the weight/strength limitations of the glue in question... I'm thinking about building some of these that are really tall... like 8-12 layers.
the tiered serving tray is brilliant! i have got to try that one out! I was wondering if you could help me out Meg, i would really want a small rug in my room maybe 3x5 more or less, would you recommened any site or any new diy tutorials, like most of us id like to stay on a low budget, any feedback would be greatly appricieted
@Aj830 i'm not meg, but i've got a couple suggestions. get a small canvas drop cloth from the hardware store and either paint or dye it. You can also cut pieces of industrial felt to size-- but that may not be any cheaper than a rug unless you've got the hook up. Really thick felt (Wool felt, not the acrylic junk) would be a very comfy plush surface...
@Aj830 oh, and check the archives-- i think there was a project where they sewed together small cotton rugs (that you can get at a dollar store) with a blanket stitch to make larger floor coverings. It ends up being really cute. You could also look at old school braided rug patterns (Most of those were made from old clothes-- look for "rag rugs") and either braid or crochet them.
meg!! i have to (want to) throw a bridal shower (as the maid of honor) for my bestest and need some super cute ideas--these stands will definitely be part of the decor. it would be awesome for you to give me some more tips (or themes); just please, HELP!!
The glue may be dishwasher safe, but I don't see that going in there safely. However there are serving trays that are actually built like this, and it would be pretty easy to wash them by hand.
@lucy23794 according to the Ebay post selling one like it, it's called a wire rack. If it's like the set I recieved in 1979, the bowls separate and the wire thing is great for displaying plates. :o) Hope that helps.
le crueset are sooo popular in the UK. I have a cream kettle (nuts about cream-matches my retro cream smeg fridge) and a few baking dishes from them. Also LOVE copper pots...heavy ones....I hang them in the kitchen on hooks :-D
I am a vintage person and I eventually want some blue accents and items in my kitchen. I love the blue you have, sort of like a robin's egg. Most of anything I find for the kitchen happens to be in red. I have also been keeping my eye on fiestaware.
I think I might make that and give it to my sister, shes always serving something when she has guest like cookies and so on also good idea for the holidays too serving sweets or as gifts, Thanks Meg!
Unfortunately, my family has a tendency to get rid of things (donating to thrift store, of course!), so we don't have much vintage/antique stuff. We shopped at garage sales a lot, so we do have some quirky stuff, though! :)
my mother has a collection of pyrex dishware that she both inherited from relatives and bought when she was in the US about 30 years ago. the dishware is older than i am, and we're still using them today!
reed and yellow fiesta ware pre 1970's is toxic. They use lead based glazes. if you have any vintage fiesta-ware, please do some research and find out if your particular line is poisonous. You can always display the toxic ones on a shelf since you can't eat off of them.
Trace amounts of radioactive elements (not lead) were used in the production of only the red-orange glaze and only prior to 1944. Although present in detectable amounts, they are so low as not to be considered harmful, even if you used them regularly.
i'm well aware of the radiation but I've been told my entire life about the warning or lead in read and yellow glaze. I'm an artist and my mentor does pottery for a living. She's told me many times before as well. i'm also just warning people in general about vintage ceramics.
