Thanks for making this video - definitely a showcase of some of the best Fantine performers out there. It would have totally sounded better with Hayley and Joanna not included, however, because they sang the song in a DIFFERENT KEY, breaking the flow of the song and rendering the "chorus ending" out of tune.

(con't) Susan Boyle has the potential to be the best fantine, coz her voice is naturally gravelly and expressive, considering she had no training or coaching whatsoever. but then again, she needs more training, coz in the last high note you could hear her larynx going up and squeezing a bit.

I've also heard better renditions by Elaine Paige and Patti, but i think only Elaine could move up into my top 3. patti owns so many other songs, so i can give this one to other deserving singers. Ü

#1: ruthie. i agree that her TAC rendition is unsurpassed, she even changed her voice to be more gravelly to fit the character.

#2: lea. yeah her voice is a little too sweet, but her interpretation is really moving.

#3: judy. it's kinda too clean and pure and even in all registers (which is fantastic considering ONLY vocal technique), but the good thing about her is that she doesn't sacrifice the gritty emotion required of the song. (con'td)

Ruthie's version in TAC is the best I have heard. The Ruthie here is not at her best. YouTube has removed Ruthie's clip from TAC by Mistyaho, so it's no longer available, but an alternate by Andrew0923 is pretty close in quality. You really have to hear the best version by each of these vocalists to make an informed decision, and you need to hear the entire song performed.

Comparisons here r utterly impossible given these performances r done under very different circumstances, conditions, contexts & styles. Paige's is very untraditional, Salonga's actually performing the musical, Ruthie's at a special, low key, glamorous function, Kuhn is in a room @ White House singing to the President, Boyle's a rookie on a tv show. I think you get my point here. If they're all placed on a similar stage, sound quality & so on, then the greatest singer of this is RUTHIE HENSHELL

Trying listening to the voices without watching the video. I think it may be safe to say that Susan Boyle has a way to go before she can be equated with some of these women. That being said, it is not to say there is no room for her somewhere if not eventually next to some of these women.

This is an excellent editing job/montage.

It makes me want to see Les Miserables now! (I've never seen it).

Some of these women don't sound nearly as good as Susan, but some are sensational. I especially loved the girl in full costume sitting on the stage floor, she REALLY put all her heart and emotion into the song. She wasn't just singing, she was pouring her heart out and acting her role.
