@BenjyBronky completely agree! Also, why do old / stiff white people always clap on 1 and 3 at a concert instead of 2 and 4 like normal people? As a white person and a retired drummer it just annoys the hell out of me.

I mean look at the crowd you'll see most clapping with the bass drum instead of the snare drum(like the back up singer is doing). I dunno it's just a pet peeve of mine. You'll never catch a black person clapping on 1 and 3....ever! Get it together people!!!

Merry Clayton's dynamic vocal contribution, did (in my opinion) provide the unique & intensely compelling element that put Gimme Shelter in a league of it's own, as far as Stones songs. Not that it would not have been a classic, but "that voice" of hers delivers the urgency...the horror...like no other could

Absolutely. I saw an interview with Merry. She said during the recording of this song, some of the people were laughing at her because of her inability to get comfortable in a chair. She looked right in the camera and said "Wasnt nobody laughing after the session!"

Seems like I heard an interview of her on the radio a long time ago, and she said she was very pregnant when she recorded this. For years I thought the band was Jefferson Airplane cuz I don't think the Stones ever used a female in the group... (before or since?) Anyway, one of the greatest of the great rock songs EVER (still gives me goose bumps) - and her voice helped make it that. (I'm talking the Stone's version of course) I just love it...

Apparently, via a Stones intermediary who knew Merry's husband, she was invited to an overdub session in LA at very short notice. She had never met the Stones before and knocked out her famous backing vocal within a couple of takes....one of rock n rolls greatest moments
