I have never heard Gilmore do Syd. This is a sublime rendition which loses none of the original yet demonstrates what a powerful songwriter Barrett was. Gilmore takes the trippy "novelty" aspect out of the equation, leaving the poetry to speak for itself. I feel this was Davids' role in much of his association with Syd. Another opinion, "No Syd Barrett, no Nirvana...". Lyrically at least.
I saw Gilmour perform in dc after floyd broke up 1984 .he was fucking amazing and loud played all his solo stuff plus Comfortably numb and money. The best crowd ever shows up for him.
cheers, to all the young people, who are just starting to listen to pink floyd! thankyou david for playing more older songs and getting into the early days. the greatest guitarist ive ever known, and a good guy to boot! thumbs way up high!,
If this wasn't cut short the next thing Gilmour does is starts strumming "If It's In You" then stops as if to say "only joking" I'm not going to perform that one.
God, I didn't realize how much this music and Gilmour (God) meant to me until it was too late. That makes me cry a little every time I think about it. i don't think he will ever perform again. If he does, it will be a miracle. But, I will respect the decision he makes. :D He has his own life
It doesn't take balls for him to play this song. Gilmour joined the Floyd to make sure Syd's songs got played properly when his old friend wasn't up to it. Sure, they may have been dicks for firing Syd the way they did, but Dave still took his role as Syd's back-up/stand-in very seriously and always did his best to promote him..
For the the record, Dave was playing the arpeggiated lead on the original version of this song. He credits Syd for the intro to "Baby Lemonade".
@spyungart um.. there seems to be a lot of confusion about all this. David Gilmour played on and produced most of the Syd Barrett solo material... so all these "how dare he" type of garbage is WAY misplaced. He was a contributor too all those tracks, it's not like he picked the songs up and said "I can do this better."
i wouldn't be surprised if alot of the guitar playing u thought was syd on the solo lps was actually dave gilmour......i.e. the intro to 'baby lemonade'......and maybe, just maybe, the chords to this song.
I mean, yeah, Syd did it better, but David is one of the best in the world to cover this song, since he was one of those who helped Syd on this record.
To say the boring stuff everyone else does as well:
by the time this was recorded the syd spirit was long gone anyway. throughout the seventies he just sat in a flat in south london watching TV and getting fat while moving occasionally back and forth from cambridge.
Kind of funny how you can really see the difference between the Pink Floyd fans and the LOYAL Pink Floyd fans when they clap for the song. So few people know who he's actually talking about or what the song is.

Buena interpretación, aunque me digo quedando con la versión original de Syd. Es que Syd le imprimia un sentimiento que venia desde adentro del alma.

"That was done in one take! Syd's a genius". Roger Waters on recording Syd Barrett's song, "Terrapin"..
It's nice that Dave did this but it doesn't capture the humour and wit of the original, but that
s perfectly understandable. Kudos to Gilmour for all he's done for Syd.

Syd did it better?, to be honest Syd didnt have a clue what he was doing or where he was when he recorded his two solo albums.

Gilmour didnt help syd on any of the Madcap songs, only on the Barrett ones...
1mrsnuggles1 3 years ago
Gilmour helped produce the album, played some bass and played some 12-string acoustic guitar on the album
WillamLite 3 years ago 11
yes he did! both Gilmour and Waters helped produce the album and play some lines to Bass/Guitar.

Gilmour was one of Barrett's closest, most loyal friends. And he catches the subtlety of Barrett's tunes beautifully. A Fine tribute.
