I just got Mule Variations and it is my first Tom Waits album. I love it and was wondering what I should get next. My friend tell's me "Swordfishtrombones" should be next, followed by Rain Dogs and Franks Wild Years. Would you agree or no?

And if you listened to those (or one of them), you should get nighthawks at the diner or blood money.

Actually i reccomend all his albums becous i abslutely adore him and his music, but you have to start somewhere right? ;)

That gentle lead guitar filigree at 0:46-48: Pure tenderness as pure sound. So many held/sustained notes, chords, & gentle echoes here. So perfectly spaced, with the guitars shimmering above & below his it's-a-long-road voice, the whisking brushes, & chugging rhythm guitar. This song floats. "And a ring made from a spoon." Love can redeem junk into loyalty. He has exquisite phrasing here. If you can't hear it, what life does to hope will eventually make sure you do.

I haven't seen this video for many years, but the first time I saw it I learned this song. It's a favorite of mine to perform. There aren't many songs this rich in visual images. I have an entire movie in my mind of these people and these places. Sometimes Waits is a little harsh for the general musical audience, but this is sweet, and very moving.
