  • Voyager Spacecraft? Not that Mani Iyer vaaL would have denounced any new technology especially when it honours him. But can't you think of other great quotes about this son of Palghat soil, without thinking like an average Indian immigrant of USA, inwit?

But thanks for posting this great Alathur video exemplifying the combined geniuses of these greatest artists (Lalgudi sir is quite at home too!).

  • @pisthall he is just trying to illustrate that PMI's genius is great enough to be recognized by the entire world.

  • dont know much about mridangam but i know what i like

  • What an artist. Execution, control on laya, expression and command. Glad I'm finally discovering him. Haha ... amazing. Keeping count w/ him is a joy.

  • He is one of the greatest! thanks for sharing...

  • I remember both Palghat Mani Iyer and the Umayalpuram Sivaraman, brings back my early days both are excellent!

  • This is very beautiful playing! I simply love hearing palghat and palani master play. truly there will never be any miruthangist that shall outmatch these maestros

  • Can more or less see where UKS & PR got their magnificent strokes from :)

  • Great. What a pity we have so few videos of these all-time greats.

  • Great master.....he born for it...

  • We'll all miss His grace for sure.

  • He is truly one of the great maestros. Thanks so much for adding this clip.

  • There is no mridangam or Carnatic music on the Voyager Golden Record. The Indian selection is a rendition of Raga Bhairavi by the Hindustani singer Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar.

  • What is the tala in this video, and how is it clapped/waved? I am curious...

  • It is Adi thalam 2 Kala.

Normal Adi Thalam with each beat 2 times.

    That is, X X 1 1 2 2 3 3 X X V V X X V V

    Where, X - Beat, 1, 2 and 3 are fingers and V - waving. Total 16 Matras Hence 16x4=64 Aksharas

  • AN ALL TIME GENIUS !!

  • Really great to get footage of these Old Masters. Thanks for uploading it, much appreciated

  • very true. He dosent play as fast or flambouyant as some of the newer players but there is something in his playing that just oozes pure class. It is hard to describe but i think its his ability to play difficult things and make it seem simple.

  • I like these old recordings of indian musicians. This guy was the best.
