  • There were many great fighters on all sides during the war.

One has to remember that the P-40 was really just a modified P-36 of late 1930s design - exceptional in its time yet slightly out-dated at the out-break of war even after the radial engine was replaced with the liquid cooled Allison V-12.

Regardless, Ive always loved the P-40E.

I am fortunate in having known one of the AVG Flying Tigers as a young boy and have fond memories of conversations with him about aircraft.

  • Back bone of the RAAF during WW2 Devastating fire-power from the 6 x 50 cals. Built like a tank and rugged. Fitted with the Merlin also..

  • excellent, beautiful and useful aircraft.

  • in my eyes, the P-40 symbolizes American Air Power around the beginning of the war. the howling of that Allison V-1710 engine gives me goosebumps. hehe

  • If you P-40 afficionados want to really understand

actually how tough the P-40 was, read the book "Doomed from the Start" by Bill Bartsch

The true story of what happened to the pursuit squadrons in the Phillipines after Pearl Harbor.

A grim tale of heroism and abandonment of 90,000 americans to the Japanese.

Especially interesting is the story of the 2 remaining aircarft "P-40 Something" & "Kibosh"

  • What did the P40 Tomahawk call a flight of Japanese Betty Bombers over China?

    FRESH MEAT!

  • Hi guy, id turn tora tora tora on to just listen to the P-40 fly past the control tower in the one scene where short is all paranoid over our planes sitting out there unprotected in the ramp,

Sweet Plane and sweet history too,

  • the hoopla about all the victories in stangs, spits corsairs, and hell cats wasnt nothing but overzealous media trying to get attention for the people back home and and a silly attempt to make average pilots look good when it wasnt the pilot at all,

The P-40 pilots deserve alot more credit than they got in the early part of the war,

P-40's were more dogfihter than either the hellcat, or the corsair,

  • It wasn't used in North Africa, Pacific Theatre for nothing... the Russians used it extensively as well.. tough plane, great diver! When used in pairs and with proven aerial combat tactics by experienced pilots it was every bit as formidable as a Hellcat... no doubt.

  • The P-40 was a good airplane, and it would hold up well against other planes even if Itself wasnt that fast,

but it was rugged and was a good design,

    Put a good pilot in a P-40

and youll have a plane that would get victory,

and rack up alot of kill's against the enemy,

  • this summer is the 75th anniversary of the p-40's production they were made in buffalo ny. I am going to an air show where there is going to be a lot of p-40's I can't wait

  • you are the luckiest man alive

  • You are so lucky!

  • Awsome! What brand is the prop?

  • Curtiss Electric, 3 blade propellor, 11' in diameter, rotating clockwise (as viewed from the pilot's seat)

  • This plane's record and abilities always seems to be overshadowed by the Mustangs, Hellcats, Spitfires and Corsairs. Undoubtedly one of the best fighters built.

  • Based on what?

  • See below...

  • The fact that she was flown very successfully by the Checkered Tails in Italy with huge wins over the Bf-109 helps matters as well. Or that the Tuskogee airmen flew her before getting the P-51s. The lopsided victories by the smaller Flying Tiger unit against the Japanese airmen. All account for an impressive record.

  • Also flown by the 1st American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, over the Burma road in China and over Rangoon. They amassed close to 300 Japanese kills with only 14 losses of their own.

  • During World War 2 the Americans used the p-40 at Pearl Harbour to stand up against the Japanese

  • the WarHawk is my personal favorite...mean, mean figher...

  • Beautiful aircraft. As you may have gathered from my screen name, my father was a P40F fighter pilot during WWII (Tunisia, North African Campaign). He took wings about 10 years ago and it's videos like this that tugs at the heart and gives me great pride!

  • What a beaut...... :-)

  • aha, my question is answered by propfan2k. We in western Illinois also have a Geneseo but I didn't recall it having an airfield :)

    the plane is great.

  • The germans are coming

  • This year's airshow is scheduled for July 13 to 15. If you'll be in Western NY it's definitely worth checking out!

web search "1941 HAG" for more details

  • Love those old warbirds!

  • sweet
