In the time of slavery, and of the Jim Crowe Laws, the Republicans were the liberal party. The parties have since switched. @mmorgan0678 republicans of that day would be considered liberal... so was thomas jefferson. neither of those can compare to the liberals of today. liberal is a relative term, much like conservative. the democrats today have unfairly portrayed republicans of today as racists. i find it humorous when al gore can rant that those who disbelieve the global warming theory are somehow racists, when his own father fought against desegregation...
