Read what is 'not' put in the history textbooks and you will learn a lot more than you can imagine. Ulysess S. Grant on the other hand still had his by the end...

@BronxBuddy56 You are right on both accounts. Lee did free slaves in his possession long before the war started. He did not believe in slavery and wanted it abolished. The slaves in his possession had been 'passed down' from prior generations. And yes, Grant's wife did own slaves. A reliable account of a conversation between Grant and one of his officers(can't remember the name off-hand), why he didn't free them was 'good help is hard to find these days'(Grant's words). Interesting...
