Imagine my innocent comment about the song being about Diana Ross (how dare I - how DARE I - not only own the CD but actually had the gall to post something I read about the song in the liner notes) is clearly unforgivable, and definitely needs to start a flame war. I'll make sure to never say '2+2=4' or 'summer is usually the hottest season of the year' or other very subjective things like that.
Did anyone know that he wrote this song about Diana Ross, of all people (apparently when they were both VERY young, he had a crush on her, but it wasn't a shared feeling). Hence, the line about 'with the velvet glove, she pushed me off the edge of love'. Apparently when the Supremes first started out, they thought that 'wearing gloves' was somehow sophisticated...
@TheReturnOfStephan1 I know what you mean, but by the 1960s wearing gloves and being from California but speaking 'in thah theatah voice' (also known as Mid-Atlantic - "is she British or North American"). Audrey Hepburn stopped wearing gloves in her films circa 1961, and even then, it was unusual...
It wasn't unusual at all. One simply had to know how to wear them. Audrey(w/ Givenchy)certainly did & the vast majority her most iconic film images feature her in them.
What that "theater voice" thing has to do with anything,...eh, well.
@TheReturnOfStephan1 Hmmm... well, I grew ujp in an upper-middle class family, and my mother NEVER wore gloves Well, she wore work gloves in the garden) and sometimes in the 60s she even went to stores wearing (gasp) trousers... As for the theater voice, I can see how you might be confused. But usually speaking affectedly (in media) went gloved hand in gloved hand with wearing gloves.
@TheReturnOfStephan1 No, I wasn't trying to 'look clever', I just have a stream-of-consciousness way of thing. Oh, and YOU'RE dismissed... Oh, were you trying to look clever? :-) CIao.
Love these end 60 - begin 70's songs. Specially those basslines. Feelgood music with a motown touch. A little bit Quincy Jones bassline (Chump change). Is this the original or is it Elton's?

LOVE THIS VIDEO.....DEFINITELY ONE OF THE TOP OF MY FAVS!!!!! He's so young, innocent.....and really doesn't "know" how wonderful he is!!!! I guess that is what is appealing to me!
This video is amazing. Lou's face in full screen......PERFECTO!!! He is just the ultimate man. When he looks into that camera....WHOA----I'm in TROUBLE!!!
I've noticed something about this video and I wonder if anyone can help me. You mayu have recognised the bass player and guitarist are Dee Murray and Caleb Quaye, respectively, and I'm pretty sure that is Roger Pope on drums. These people all played with Elton John on his early work, areound this time (circa 1969). THEREFORE, look at the organist here, bearing in mind how Elton looked in the 60s. Is that him? You only get one shot. Knowing the amount of session work he did, I am sure it is him
All I can say is WOW!!!!! What a great performance as usual. He Is genius always and just one great entertainer, role model, humanitarian and inspiration!!!!!!
His best.....young, interesting, and not trying too hard.....just being who he is with a song that is rather mysterious.....love Lou when he holds back a little bit!
@flurrypain I didn't miss him by a generation ! I bought this record ( on vinyl of course which I still have somewhere ) when it came out & must have played it a million times . I loved it so much & had such a huge teenage crush on this man . Even though I'm now 53 , he still does something to me !!
@naja46 Lucky. I'm trying to find more information on him, but web searches just have the same 6 paragraphs highlighting his career. I don't suppose anyone wrote a biography? Or a detailed website? Wish he would write one.
@LousFool .....oh yes! He is way cuter than any young artist I can think of.....move over Justin B!.....or Timberlake.....There is just something about Lou!
Just a great "time capsule" of Lou Christie ......SELLING HIS MAGIC......to all of us! A "look" at a timeless and distinctive moment in Lou's rise to stardom!
Oh Mary, I call it as I see it! And besides drooling, how about ---talking to MYSELF, talking to Lou on the computer screen, having hot flashes and heart palpitations, just to name a few! I want to watch him on a BIG SCREEN TV! Can you imagine THAT?!!!! They wouldn't be able to pry me away from the tv! He is such a tease, but OH!, how I love it! ====Marilyn
Hi Mary, yes, a girl CAN dream. I've been doing that myself! And that smile there seems as though he has a secret, like a little boy! OH! his secret IS, he knows he is making us drool.====Marilyn
Mgarguemare, hi. I like your little word arrangement. Good one. I never was too big on Elvis, but I do have to say I've "admired" Tom Jones over the years(if you get my meaning!) BUT!!!!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, in a million years do any of them even come close to Lou! Whole other species! This darling man, as I've said, is just pure perfection! And I know what you mean about the chest thing! I tend to want to go there, too! We are SOOO BAD, huh?===Marilyn
Mgarguemare----I agree, "Watch Your Heart After Dark" is a beautiful song. Lou sounded like he was in a sexy mood when he recorded it. But somehow, I think of Lou as ALWAYS in a sexy mood! He did have a few sighs in there, didn't he?
Well, last night, Jan.9, was when he was performing at Lancaster,Pa. near me. I was so sad the whole time I was at work, thinking about LouBaby. I kept wondering what kind of sexy moves he would be making!
Now if only there was a video such as this one with him singing and showing actual movement to "Watch your heart after dark". I have to say that is my most favorite song of his, he sounds soooo sexy with the sort of grunting noises he makes while singing..."Don't...kiss...anyone but me....I love it, I love it!!!!
Mgarguemare----As I said, I'm really sad that even though Lou will be in the same state as me, 6hrs is a long travel time. If it was the summer, I'd be waiting in front of the place with my ticket. I'll be really "Crying in the Streets" on Jan9.
Oh boy-- when he wrinkles his nose at 1:32, how adorable. And that little scar on his face, I'd like to kiss it and make it all better. SEXY DANCER,BABY!
Lou is such a fantastic songwriter. And isn't it MAGIC how his voice fits his songs so well. Hmmm, good-looking, smart, sexy, AND talented. A DELICIOUS combination. (Lucky for us)
Hello and welcome to my absolute FAVORITE VIDEO of Lou Christie....this one and the Midnight television 1974ish performance. I prefer the less viewed sites.
And....you are correct....my "study" has indicated that Lou DID write this song for Diana Ross.....
However, I must admit the lyrics are somewhat "strange" and mystical!
keepakat------ thanx for your reply. Happy New Year to all of Lou's ladies. I'm getting a late start tonight checking out Lou's videos. When i see that man smile, i just melt! (and shiver). I am so disappointed. On Jan.9, Lou will be performing in Lancaster, Pa. I am also from Pa., but about three hours away from where he will be.(one way). That is driving me crazy! So close, yet so far away.
to all of the ladies who love Lou-- i just found this video tonight, and WOW, i'm blown away. Lou has ALWAYS been HOT, and he is amazing here. He is still SOOO sexy and good-looking. Those eyes, those lips, and that BODY! What a man. I've always loved Lou since back in the day when i bought the 45 record of Lightnin' Strikes. Loved the voice first, then when i saw THE MAN, i was hooked. all of his videos are LIGHTNING!
Do any of you guys know how tall he is, he always seemed to be wearing boots with 1-1/2" heels; also would you know why he posed in the "raw", saw his picture in "Lou Christie Images" and all he had on was the word "America" down the side of his leg. Perhaps it was for an album cover, or inside the jacket/cover.
I dont' know how old you guys are; I am 52 and I totally agree with each and everyone of you. He was "Delicious", now at 66 he is still handsome. Are there any live interview videos out there of him when he was in his 20s...30s perhaps?
Well, thank-you for agreeing with us! Lou is hot at any age! I don't know of any live interviews with him, when he was in his 20's/30's, but you can YouTube search, "Cousin Brucie interviewing Lou Christie". There's one from not to long ago. Unfortunately, you really can't hear Lou. To much background noise. Especially between two women and a man! @shmuli9
Back then, wearing gloves was, indeed, a mark of sophistication & good breeding foe young ladies.
Many upper class women collected gloves, their appetites served by many small boutiques that sold just that accessory.
Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn & legendary film costume designer Edith Head were some of its more famous devotees.
