This was my first mac and I first saw it at our CAD design labs at our school, and my bro eventually got me one, loved it, sold it, but getting a dual 1Ghz G4, w00t! Love the case design, such beautiful machines and at the time were the most powerful personal computer that money could buy
You probably already figured this out, but just FYI, the DIMM slots on the PowerMac G3 motherboard won't recognize more than 256 megabytes of RAM per slot. Plus, they only read up to PC-100. PC-133 will fit and work, but it will only operate at the PC-100 frequency.
So will you be upgrading your PowerMac G3 to Mac OS 10? (PowerMac G3s can run up to Mac OS 10.3 Panther and the fastest ones can run Mac OS 10.4 Tiger.)
use target disk mode. turn off your g3, connect it to your macbook using firewire. boot it up and hold the t key, until you see a fire wire logo in your display (from the g3) , and wait for it to mount on your macbooks desktop, then use it a as a firewire drive.
Personally, you should purchase a copy of Mac OS X Server, 10.3. As of course, 10.4 doesn't run well on G3's. OS X Server should meet your needs, and you were thinking of an PCI IDE Reader, so the G3 can read bigger drives.
i think you should upgrade to mac os x 10.3 panther because 10.4 tiger doesn't work that well on older macs like the g3 models and mac os 9 which would be installed on already (unless your school upgraded) doesn't really do file stuff like that and is very slow and difficult to use but os x will be a lot easier for you to file switch.
okay so i got a power mac g3 and a friend gave it to me and i was woundering should i hook it up and install pro tools on it and record my songs with it...???but then i remember that the processer is not that fast its only 400mhz so i was wounding is it a way to turn that up to 1.25 ghz or even 2...??? anyone whit an answer...????get a new mac or pc or go for it...???
Good idea on the replacing the zip drive with a hard drive, but it can only be used as storage and not the boot drive. I have three drives in my powermac G3 with one in the zip drive slot as extra storage. Even with 3 drives the total gbs can not exceed 128. The limitation is in the bus so an external hd can be as big as you want. I am using my pm g3 as an iTunes server over my network. Frees up space on my main computer. Good luck with your project.
I got my g3 from my school too :P They had it in the coorner and it was known as "toms mac" as i was the only one who ever used it :P. Then at the end of my 1st year, i asked if i can have it and i took it home :P Put os x on there, thats what i did!
paritition the hard drive in to 2x125GB partitions and then you will be good to go, purchasing an extra IDE controller will not solve your problem as the limitation is software based, if you partition the hard drive the OS will reconise the 1 physical HDD as 2 virtual 125GB HDDs
I bought mine on eBay for 26 bucks, it came with 786 mb of memory, 50 gig hard drive, It has Tiger installed on it, and it came with a keyboard and mouse.
yup. i have the same model and i have four 256mb of ram thingys 3 and i just crashed it today it gives me a screen full of crap and at the bottom it says we are hanging on i dont konw how to fix it can you or any one else help me.
what you do is slap on mac osx (panther preferably for a g3) on to it, and just boot it into target disk mode ( hold apple t, or do it from within osx, format it with your macbook, done, just plug it in and copy what ever you want over 400mbps firewirey goodness!
I believe on the G3, The IDE Controller for the CD ROM is ATA66, which will only support 128 GB, Try getting an IDE Ribbon cable for 2 drives, and put it on the Primary Master, which should be ATA100 (Ultra IDE) That ribbon cable can be removed on the motherboard and replaced. Also, I don't think you'll find a 1 GB SDRAM chip. (G3 uses PC100/133 RAM)
What PCI to IDE (or SATA) card will work with it? I just got one too, and I want to do the same thing, but all the PCI to IDE cards I've seen have "Windows" written among their system requierments, or nothing written at all. are there any with drivers for mac?
I broke all the plastic shit off my mac G3.. Looks cool as hell now. Its a chrome box. I also plan on doing simiular things to my mac. I already installed more ram, a bigger processor and a DVD/CDR burner, but didnt know about the hard drive... I think I may go sata with that. I will also have to upgrade the OS. Seems to be a good little machine for what I use it for.
Its not the operating system its the hardware. Pre 2002 Macs (and possibly some PCs) only have 32 bit addressing IDE connections. Hard Drives larger than 128 GB require 48 bit addressing. So you are right about getting the IDE PCI card but you could of gotten a SATA Hard drive that is faster than IDE (3 GBps vs. 150 MBps)@750 GB and a SATA card to get really fast transfer speeds!
You ramble too terribly much. you could have shortened the file by a few minutes I think if you cut down on the ludicrous explanations. You just keep going like a mac-addict Duracell Rabbit...
Thanks that was very helpful. My aunt just gave me a G3 and i want to use it just for rendering, but i didn't know how to upgrade it. One question though, what pci ideee card should i buy to help it recognize the full hard drive. I don't know much about this kind of stuff.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The school realized Macs Sucked so bad, they were giving the problem away for free.
That is alot of stuff you have to buy buddy, I got a IBM pc in a yard sale that came with 128 MBRam PC133,
I installed a 300Gb Harddrive, the BIOS of the system only regitered 3GB, wen I installed XP, the setup regitered 300GB, so I particioned 80Gbs for the OS inatallation, and I kept the 220GBs for storage, the IBM CPU is a celeron At 500Mhz, so it plays DVDs at full FPS.
@LeMacMan no computer slows down overtime. sure, new more powerful machines are released, but a computer has the same speed from the day you bought it since the day you dump it (unless you add hardware like a new cpu, more ram, faster hdds or vgas
Back then when that Mac was bought, it was probably one of the best machines out there, but technology has gotten better since then, and they probably bought new systems for their College in place of them. (Probably Macs) Apple has been advertising and giving deals out to Colleges, it has been their way of getting people to use macs, kind of like advertising strategy for them since they started.
older macs can handle larger hard drives.. but you need some kind of new firmware to support it.
try ubuntu linux for ppc cpus. You might also want to set this system up as an ftp server for when you are not at home. I use filezilla (the server edition of course). If you do want to stay in your native os just get that pci card tho. good luck.
I'm actullay planning on setting up a home webserver pretty soon. This wouldn't cut it though as it will house music files and probably a little video. I sold this mac to my buddy in the other vids so now he is a mac fan too!
you should also use it as a Wired server. It's a mac only service that has chat, messaging, news and file sharing. i run a server on it, and i must say that its really cool and extremely easy to set up.
Thanks. I actually sold this mac to a buddy of mine who was interested in macs. I have another acer laptop that I will set up to run as a home server. Thanks again.
Well actually you should get a used OS X licence, sice then it'll recognize the hard-dive the way it's supoced to. Also, if you get up to 512 Mb of RAM you should be able to install the OS X copy you got with your MacBook, I know a cupple of people who have succesfully have installed OSX 10.4 on their PowerMac G3's.
This won't have any effect on your MacBook's OS since Apple alows their usesrs to install their OS versions on as many computers as they want (unlike Microsoft).
mk... i have a 80 gb 2.5in external that i take with me everywere and a 160 2.5 and a 250 3.5 at home. i guess i just wondered why you would have a desktop to hold a 250 gb hard drive lol
Yeah it does suck. The G3 runs on 300mHz so it is by no means speedy but I just need it for storage, so it works ok. Though the transfer speeds also are not that great.
Yes actually, all of my YouTube videos are edited on my Macbook using iMovie HD. For the Mac vs. Windows comparison, I used the free utility that comes with Windows, so cleverly called Windows Movie Maker. The Movie Maker was very basic in the things that it could do so I much prefer iMovie HD on my Mac. Thanks.
Yes, I could but I like the fact that I can add additional internal hard drives (which are cheaper than external) at a lower price. Also, the G3 will be a testing machine for all of my future programming and it is nice to watch all my stored DVDs on the 19" monitor it came with.
True, but now I can purchase additional internal hard drives at a lower price in comparison to their external counterparts and have them in one central location. This G3 will also a testbed for all of my future programming and it is nice to watch all of my stored DVDs on the 19" (free) monitor it came with.
dang man you got so lucky with a free computer and a apple. i need some advice. i have a dell desktop that is about 5 years old. 80 gig hard drive. 256 ram. windows xp professional. i've been looking into getting an apple for some time and i was wondering if this would be the right time to swith with "leopard" coming out and all? i have a budget of about $1400 so i was considering the mid range macbook. would that be a good buy considering i have never used Mac OS at all before?
Like you, I previously had absolutely no experience with the Mac OS before but the transition was not all that bad. Of course there are a few quirks here and there but switching from anything to something different will always have its minor problems. I would say hold off on the new Mac until Leopard does ship unless you need the Mac now. If you purchase the Macbook now, Apple will charge you around $100 to upgrade later. Thanks!
Well no, 120 GB is not really that much but also, my Macbook only has the 80 GB drive. I wasn't really planning on ripping full length DVDs to my hard drive either...So now I have this.

dang man you got so lucky with a free computer and a apple. i need some advice. i have a dell desktop that is about 5 years old.

Thanks!

so when geting a macbook you think £120gb is enough if having lots of music and video files?

Well no, 120 GB is not really that much but also, my Macbook only has the 80 GB drive. I wasn't really planning on ripping full length DVDs to my hard drive either...So now I have this.
